Question about Ford Mustang

1 Answer

Mechanical vibration from drive shaft/ rear diff that increases after a few miles. it is bad enough i do not want to drive for fear i might damage something farther in this 89 mustang gt which i have owned for a month. i just finished the AOD to T5 switch. rear seals show leakage. diff full but fluid looks clean like it was just filled. does not feel like wheel hop at all. If someone ran this rear dry what could have been damaged that would cause this vibration? seals and bearings are part of next project anyway so looking for advise on what to look for once i open this rear. thanks for your thoughts

Hi Friend:

Sorry to Hear about this problem:

#1) Well 1st of All don't know if you've checked your Universal Joints or Not,But They can cause this Vibration,Exspecially when there almost Gone(Roller Bearings) in the Caps.

#2) But if the Vehicle was driven for any Length of time Low or Almost Empty ,Which sounds like the Problem ,since you have already seen the Yoke Seal on the Differential Leaks.

#3) You will Probally find a lot of Metal Shavings in the bottom of your 3rd member, when you open it up..

#4) The Damage this can Cause is Your Ring Gear,Pinions Left and Right,Carrier Bearings are Shot,And your Axle Bearings were also affected. So Basically the only good that you'll gain is the Rear End Housing.

#5) Also if its taken out your Axle Bearings Your Axles also may not be Worth Re-Using.

Either completly Rebuilt .but I recommend you find a Complete Replacement of Your Differential.

Please let me know how i've helped you By voting on the Quality of my Solution was,and a Testamony would be Appreciated.

Thank You for using FIXYA From: d_hubbs

AFTER REPLACING U-JOINTS & HANGER BEARING ON MY 1995 VOLVO 960 I HAVE VIBRATION AT SPEED PARTICULARLY UNDER ACCELERATION. I TRIED ANOTHER SHAFT AND IS WORSE. I THINK IT MIGHT BE HANGER BEARING ALI

did you mark the two ends of the shaft at gearbox and diff
so they lined up again
with the center bearing replacement
did you mark the two halves before separating and replacing the center bearing
then make sure they lined up again

if vibration is there
you may need to go to a diff shop and have the drive shaft balanced properly

I have a shakeing/vibration coming from the rear.

While your local guy is having a guess get him to look at a damaged or out of round wheel. A damaged tyre. Then have him jack up the rear wheels and fit jack stands then drive the car up slowly and watch the rear wheels for shaking or buckle and see if the vibration starts. You don't say how many miles but a worn or damaged suspension bush, shock absorber etc can give these symptoms. Check carefully and if you are not confident with that person then ask around for another opinion before you spend out. A good experienced mechanic should be able to trace it just from a test drive, followed by an inspection.

2007 toyota hilux 4x4. Bad whining and vibrations in front end while driving. Feels like front diff trying to lock in. Any ideas. Taken to few 4x4 mechanics they say never heard of it before!!!

check the bushes / bearings that are in the end of the diff housing for shaft wear. Check the cv joints for wear. check shafts for bent . check front wheel bearings and adjustment. Check the drive shaft from the transmission to the front diff as they are prone to u-joint failure and excessive wear in the slip joint.

PossibleVibration cause placing lowering shackle on a 1995 Gmc will they cause a vibration

If you are talking about lowering the car by the use of shorter shackles then it is possible to get a vibration from the drive shaft of the car. What you are doing is lowering the gearbox extension housing in relation to the diff pinion and that alters the working angles of the tail shaft causing a harmonic vibration. After you have finished you work on the car have a tail shaft manufacturer check the angles as it may be necessary to roll the diff housing a few degrees or lift the rear engine mount a bit to correct that working angle.

CAR MAKING A LOW MOAN NOISE AS IT SLOWS DOWN BETWEEN 50-40MILES

diff noises are a harmonic whine on drive (Acceleration or drive speed )or a growl on overdrive ( slowing down or coasting)
if you have a drive shaft to the rear diff it is possible that the rear shaft has not been assembled correctly and the out of phase of the joints will give indications that you describe
Take it to a drive shaft specialist shop for a diagnosis

The whole car vibrated and had to remove the draft shaft. Whats the effect if i just use the Honda CRV without the shaft as 2 wheel drive. I am told the diff mounting is broken. What is its function. whats...

it is safe to drive the vehicle with front drive shaft only. if there is a mount that is broken, REPLACE IT! there is a danger if that is broken. if the tech already has everything, might as well get it done and enjoy your vehicle. cheers.
