Question about 1996 Toyota Tercel

1 Answer

My son took his 97 toyota tercel in for a simple oil change and filter change and an air filter change and also a fuel filter change..well, it went fine until the fuel filter change..jiffy lube couldnt remove it..so they worked hard to do it..once they started they couldnt quit..it was half undone and they couldnt leave it there..so they took it off..well, they said the screw in part was cross haired..or whatever..and so they worked at trying to starighten that out..they couldnt..they tried to put the new fuel filter in and they couldnt..well, they had to push my sons car into a place to keep it over night so we can then get it towed to a machine shop where I heard someone say that it could be fixed with a flange or whatever that means..I dont have any idea what this all looks like..I called the toyota dealer and he said it sounds like there was damage to the fuel line and that is why a flange was mentioned..wow..I wish I could see the diagram of the thing..to know what transpired here..I trust the jiffy lube people there in huntsville tx...they noticed that the older fuel filter was hard on there and figured it was cross haired..but thought they could actually get it off...when i spoke with the toyota dealer later as I wanted to know more he basically said ..dont fix what aint broke...I thought it was just a filter like all the rest of the filters..I called someone who said that usually people replaced these three filters over time and we knew we hadnt done it since we bought the 97 bk in 2006...helppppp...the jiffy lube gal said if she had a flange and some tools she could do it..but I want the car safe for my son to drive and not have it explode ..but not paying an arm and a leg on the car....it has 120,000 miles on it ..to me that isnt too bad for a 97 toyota tercel....wow..what have i done...

I figure that you have got a whole lot of issues to solve. In the first place make a record of the maintenance to be done on your dear car with a systematic approach. There is a time frame as well as the running mileage maintenace that keeps your car fully fit for all occassions. Now since you thought of changing all the filters in one go-- as I see overdue- there is no point now to point the finger at anyone. But it could have happened earlier with the owner to have plugged in a filter maybe with a cross thread. But now sice they had tried to put in the filter- I hope the Toyota OE- it might have gone in cross and resulted in damaging the thread on the engine block. Now we get serious , if the block has a cross thread we need to rethread first trying if possible without removing the engine. hence you need the assistance of a machine shop for thread cutting/ shaping. Sometimes it may not work well and you will need to take the engine block out to do a good job. but you can also mend with using good metal paste but it may not be good for the next owner. Since you have clocked so much it will be good to also change your transmission oil, check your brakes fuel pumps and suspension. You can do more miles provided you are happy with the performance. Good day

1995 Toyota tercel keeps engine skipping when I am driving

New leads is good silly question the spark plugs were also replaced? Assuming this is the case next port of calls are the ignition coils then the injectors. Anecdotally if it very intermittent and is as car warns up probably coils if it is ever present look towards injectors. Once again check simple things first like battery condition, fuel filter, air filter.

If not cranking with new battery, it is possible you were low on oil and the motor has seized.

I have a 2002 toyota camry and everytime i come to a stop my car dies.

Hi, this is poor fuel distribution that can be caused by a clogged fuel filter or a faulty fuel pump. i would change both devices to insure maximum performance if not done so already. i would also change the air filter as well. the increased air flow will improve combustion.

Another good point is to add a pint of sea foam to the fuel tank during fill up. this additive, will cleanse the entire fuel system. it removes debris form the fuel rials and lines.

Replacement of 1991 Toyota Tercel Fuel Filter

i wouldnt do i fuel filter unless it is for sure that it needs to be done.

try changing the plugs and spraying out the throttle body in front of the butterfly plate.

there is going to be a lot of black carbon builtup preventing the tbi from breathing at an idle position.the inside of the throttle body or tbi should be very nice and clean.
changing an fuel filter thats not needed can cause more problems for an extra cost.of the not needed parts.fuel filters only should be replaced at a loss of power or pickup or something like that.
anything rough is in plugs and intakes.

hope this helps
thank you

Fuel problem

first i would cover the basics. change the fuel filter, next change the spark plugs, careful this car takes special spark plugs. probably have to get from toyota. next clean the throttle body, pull air nozzle off and open the butterfly so you can spray throttle body cleaner in their and clean with toothbrush. also dont be alarmed after cleaning the throttle body and changing the fuel filter it will be hard starting, hold the gas pedal half way.

Fuel regulator, EGR vavle and EGR valve sensor. But this really sounds like a fuel issue. You can also check your fuel pump, and of course check your air filter and your spark plugs.
