Question about 1998 Jaguar XJ8L

The car will sometimes shut off when I'm crusing,

The car will sometimes shut off when I'm crusing on a highway, always at speeds of 50 mph or more. I have to shift to neutral and it usually takes a few attempts to crank it before it fires back up.

I've now noticed that it sometimes has a hard time starting when I park on an incline, even a slight one. My driveway has an incline and today it wouldn't start at all - the starter engages and it may fire once but that's all. I can smell the gas too.

Any ideas?

When i owned my 98 XJ8L... it would loose power on the highway and then stall out once it came to a stop on the side of the road...there was a recall for this... a throttle body adjustment and computer reprogramming solved it for me.

Hi there was a service action on the throttle bodys for cutting out. check the compressions and the next time it wont start press the throttle to the floor then turn the engine over this stops fuel injection till you lift your foot from the floor. have a look on the web for nickisill engines.

My 98 jag is doing the samething... ive cleaned the throttle body and changed my spark plugs... it was a temporary fix....(like 4 months) no problem... now its back in the shop under going the same treatment.. with addition to changeing the manifold intake gaskets... they say the motor might not be hold pressure.. if that doesnt work the next two steps are the injectors and the coil packs.. if yu find the problem first let me know..

MY 2000 XJ8 Jag's sunroof is leaking. It appears that the water comes in on the passenger side near the far back corner of sunroof. I've also noticed that when I close either front doors, the sunroof appears to pop up like it's not closed tight. What is the problem?

Could be a couple of things, but replace the fuel filter. Then the air filter, maybe a tune up.

My 1995 Toyota Corrolla spedomter only works at highway speeds (50 MPH). The needle stays at 0 MPH below 45 MPH. I had my mechanic check the speed sensor and that is fine. Any idea what is causing it to...

The speedo is of course electronic, it either has a defective circuit board or the tiny motor that moves the needle is defective. You will need to remove the cluster from the car and send it out to a factory repair center.

Hi I have a 1994 firebird v6 3.4 liter engine, my engine light goes on when I drive at cruse speed 55 mph. the engine always runs smooth and when I stop the car for 1 minute and start it again the engine...

Your computer on your firebird is logging a trouble code when the check engine light comes on. Save yourself some money and go to a local parts store to use a scanner. Most parts stores will hook up to your car for free and tell you the codes that are being logged. You can spend a lot of money assuming what parts may be malfunctioning by just throwing parts at your car. Check it first and you will be money ahead.

Is it better to go into D3 wihile car is moving or stopped?

Well every gear has its limitations. I am not sure what the mph ranges for each gear are, but i've gotten to 60+ mph in 3rd gear. The only thing about driving on the freeway in 3rd gear is that it is alot less efficient mileage wise. Your turning more RPMS while on the freeway in 3rd gear so you burn up alot more gas.
Driving in D3 is driving in 3rd gear. It could burn up the tranny but it depends on the vehicle itself. It is not really made to do highways speeds in 3rd gear. It should be in 4th or 5th (OD)

Speedometer surging. actual speed 40 mph,

Its a loose connection on the speedo cable. its a b*tch to get to. I had the same problem on my truck, it would fluctuate in 5th gear on the highway. i spent the money and had a professional do it.

1994 Buick Regal "shudders" while driving/ won't always up-shift

It is a 24 year old vehicle (made in 94), it probably needs to retire :>)

Take it to a transmission specialist rather than a normal garage, as it sounds like a sensor problem. It may also be rubber mountings that have perished, and the engine and transmission are only partially mounted to the chassis.
