Can i replace rear shocks with standard shocks? if so how do i get service ride control message to disappear?

    2004 yukon denali: it has no sensors on front shocks. there is one sensor on top of each rear shock and an air line about 3 inches below. the compressor has burnt out and i want to install regular shocks. i don't want the service ride control message to appear. have heard you need a resistor put in to fool monitor, but need to know where and what resistance. the sensors(without air) have a resistance of 2.2 ohms. i have tried with them unplugged and jumpered but message comes on.

    okay guys how about someone reading my problem and answering if they have a solution? i am an ase certified tech and need a little help here. i'm not looking to learn how the system works. i'm not going to a wrecker to buy more problems, i want to improve vehicle.

Hi dmjror

Yes you can replace the shocks with standard ones. Remember new ones will feel weird until they settle, this can take a week or so. So it might feel crashy and bumpy for a little while.

The service message can be wiped by removing the negative battery terminal and/or the main 50amp fuse in the fuse box. Leave one or both out for about 30 minutes and the service message will be gone, it resets the ECU and clears codes.

Found your answer online. I have same problem with front electronic dampening shocks that I replaced with conventional. KYB website says to disconnect wiring harness that plugs into the back of the height sensing module. It's this module that senses wheel height, then sends a signal to the shock. If the module is unplugged, it won't know anything is different. If only the shock connection is disconnected, it still tries to dampen the shock, then gives you error code.

OK, if you replace rear shocks on a 2004 Yukon with regular shocks you can do that, but you'll probably have problems with the ride control message reappearing, as the standard shocks don't have any connection on them that has the right resistance or signalling that the original shocks had.

I would recommend going to a salvage yard to get replacement rear shocks that would work with your system, if you don't want to buy the new parts from the dealer.

    Maybe you could cut the RTD connector and associated electronics off and use it, but I don't know if the resistance will be right. Also, measure the resistance on a known good assembled RTD connector to know what resistance resistor to use to 'fool' the system, if it is possible to do this. I have never done this, but in theory it should work. I don't think it's a digital set up.


    Removal & Installation

    2WD Front Shock Absorber
    To Remove:


    1. Raise and support the vehicle





      RTD connector




    2. If equipped with selectable ride, disconnect the Real Time Damping (RTD) link rod from the sensor as follows

      • Grasp the connector lock tabs
      • Rotate the connector tabs counter clockwise until the connector is unlocked
      • Disengage the connector from the tennon by firmly pulling the connector up

    3. Hold the tennon end with a wrench while removing the nut and remove the nut





      Upper shock insulator-




    4. Remove or disconnect the following:

      • Upper insulator but do not discard the plastic pilot ring





        Shock absorber removal-2WD




      • Shock absorber mounting bolts at the lower control arm
      • Shock absorber from below through the lower control arm

    To Install:


    1. Support the lower control arm with a suitable jack in order to align the tennon with the mounting hole if equipped with selectable ride
    2. Install the shock absorber from below through the lower control arm
    3. Insert the tennon through the mounting hole in the upper spring pocket
    4. Align the shock absorber with the mounting holes in the lower control arm
    5. Install the shock absorber mounting bolts to the lower control arm and tighten the bolts; Torque to: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
      Note: The upper insulators are substantially larger that the lower insulators. The upper insulator must be installed above the shock mounting bracket on the frame. The plastic pilot ring will assist the alignment of the isolators.

    6. Install or connect the following:

      • Upper insulator to the shock absorber
      • Nut to the tennon end but do not tighten the nut at this time
      • RTD link rod to the sensor (if equipped)

    7. Remove the safety stands
    8. Lower the vehicle
    9. Hold the tennon end with a wrench while tightening the nut; Torque to: 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
    10. Connect the electrical connector using the following procedure:

      • Verify that the connector is unlocked
      • Align the connector so that the tabs are perpendicular to the wrench flats on the tennon end
      • Engage the connector to the tennon by firmly pushing the connector down
      • Grasp the connector lock tabs
      • Rotate the connector counter clockwise

    11. The connector is locked into place when you hear an audible snap and the tabs are aligned
    12. Test drive the vehicle to confirm the repairs

    4WD Front Shock Absorber
    To Remove:


    1. Raise and support the vehicle
    2. Disconnect the (RTD) link rod from the sensor (if equipped)
    3. Disconnect the electrical connector if equipped with selectable ride as follows

      • Grasp the connector lock tabs
      • Rotate the connector tabs counter clockwise until the connector is unlocked
      • Disengage the connector from the tennon by firmly pulling the connector up

    4. Hold the tennon end with a wrench while removing the nut and remove the nut
    5. Remove or disconnect the following:

      • Upper insulator but do not discard the plastic pilot ring
      • Shock absorber mounting bolt at the lower control arm
        Note: The lower shock mounting bushing is serviceable by driving the bushing out with the appropriate tool.

      • Shock absorber






    Shock absorber removal-4WD




    To Install:


    1. Install the shock absorber
    2. Insert the stem through the hole in the shock bracket on the frame
    3. Align the shock absorber with the mounting holes in the lower control arm
    4. Install or connect the following:

      • Shock absorber through bolt to the lower control arm
      • Shock absorber through bolt nut and tighten the nut; Torque to: 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm)
        Note: The upper insulators are substantially larger that the lower insulators. The upper insulator must be installed above the shock mounting bracket on the frame. The plastic pilot ring will assist the alignment of the isolators.

      • Upper insulator to the shock absorber
      • Nut to the tennon end but do not tighten the nut at this time
      • RTD link rod to the sensor (if equipped)

    5. Remove the safety stands
    6. Lower the vehicle
    7. Hold the tennon end with a wrench while tightening the nut; Torque to: 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
    8. Connect the electrical connector using the following procedure if equipped with selectable ride

      • Verify that the connector is unlocked
      • Align the connector so that the tabs (A) are perpendicular to the wrench flats on the tennon end
      • Engage the connector to the tennon by firmly pushing the connector down
      • Grasp the connector lock tabs (A, B)
      • Rotate the connector counter clockwise
      • The connector is locked into place when you hear an audible snap and the tabs are aligned

    9. Test drive the vehicle to confirm the repairs

    Rear Shock Absorber
    To Remove:


    1. Raise and support the vehicle
    2. Remove or disconnect the following:

      • Electrical connector if equipped with real time damping (RTD)
      • Upper shock absorber nut and the bolt
      • Lower shock absorber nut and the bolt
      • Shock absorber

    To Install:


    1. Install or connect the following:

      • Shock absorber
      • Upper and lower shock absorber nuts and bolts and tighten the nuts; Torque to: 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm)
      • Electrical connector if equipped with Selectable Ride

    2. Remove the safety stands
    3. Lower the vehicle
    4. Test drive the vehicle to confirm the repairs

    There is a strong possibility that when the compressor is burnt out the computer knows it by measuring an open. So, you may have to jumper the compressor area, as well, with a known resistor that has the same resistance as the motor.

Hi,

You could replace rear shocks with standard shocks.

Depending on the vehicles options, the Ride Control System can reference two systems: Auto Leveling Control and Electronic Suspension Control.

The Auto leveling Control consists of an air compressor mounted behind the Left Rear wheelhouse and two rear shocks w/ air bags. Common failures for this system is if one of the level sensors (there is one at each wheel) has a linkage come loose, in which it can usually be popped back on. Another common failure is the Exhaust solenoid, which unfortunately cannot be purchased separately, you must buy the whole compressor if that is the problem.

The Electronic Suspension Control uses Electric Solenoid Dampeners in each of the four shocks. common problems with this system is either a poor connection at the shock (you can usually unplug and plug back in 5 times to remedy) or an open in one of the shocks, which would require shock replacement.

Unfortunately, to know for sure whats causing it, the Suspension Control Module needs to be scanned for fault codes.

    my yukopn is a denali model. there are no sensors on front shocks. the rear shocks have one sensor at the top of each and an air line about 3 inches below. the compressor is seized and a new one is a ridiculous price so i want to put on regular shocks and keep error message from coming on. i have heard that a resistor must be installed in wiring but need to know where and what resistance.

The most common problem is the rear auto level shocks leaking and/or the pump is bad. What happens ids one or both of the shock leak air, and the pump runs overtime to keep the truck level, and burns up the pump. everything is expensive.

A Service Ride Control message came on my 2005 Chevy Tahoe with 28,000 miles- Dealer diagonosed it as the EBCM and charged me $750 - on the way home the message came back on - why?

I really don't understand why they would change this module if your message stated,Ride control,
The ride control on the tahoes is an airbag (air powered shocks) leveling system. If I remember right, they are only in the rear. They are meant to raise or lower the rear end to be level with the front end. To do this, it has air shocks in the back, which are controlled by a computer and a compressor probably under the hood. Now, the light could mean many things, the most common being that an airbag broke, and air is leaking out. You may be able to hear a whine of the compressor trying to keep it filled. Less common, but possible are that the compressor is dead, or a line ruptured. The most common reason that the air shocks go out, are when the vehicle is lifted (tire change or such) without the leveling system being deactivated. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Service ride control


It's time to replace the rear shocks. There expensive like $250.00 and up each and if your not going to be towing, most people replace them with a good set of shocks and not the factor OEM air shock which you have for the auto ride height system. If your going to just buy and good set of normal gas shocks. Pull the fuse to     the auto ride system so the light on the dash is off.
Good luck and hope this helps. The auto ride system was there for towing heavy trailers to keep the ride hight. The rear suspension is actually soft so you have a soft ride and the shock keeps it from bouncing. If your not towing heavy or carring heavy loads, you should be fine with a conventional gas shocks and you may find it better. I found the Monroe Reflex shocks to be more stable then the OEM around corners and highway driving.

My autoride suspension is not working


A ton of things could be wrong with your autoride system. If you have more than about 70k miles and haven't replaced the rear shocks ($500+ EACH!!! at the dealer), then they are probably leaking out. If they leak out, then the air compressor will always run. Eventually the air compressor/ride level sensor module (located on the driver side rear wheel on the inboard side of the frame, $300+ at the dealer) burns out because it's not designed to run at 100% duty cycles. After the air compressor burns out, the Electronic Stability Control module (in an XL, located inside the passenger side rear wheelwell trim, next to the third row seat, $300+ at the dealer) will probably short out. If your autoride isn't working and you don't get a "Service Stability" message, your ESC module is probably going bad.

It is possible to convert to regular shocks, but to keep the Stability Control (still has to control your brakes and front variable dampening shocks during "evasive" maneuvers), you have to insert some 1/4 watt resistors in to the ride height sensor connectors (can't remember what values, but I'm sure you can Google that) so that the Stability system doesn't throw a code. Not that it matters, but the message can get annoying if it's always there to nag...

My dealer quoted over $2500 to replace the entire system. I figure I can find the control modules from my local junkyard for $300, and the shocks from ebay for $350 for the pair. Be sure to match all of the GM part numbers, and keep an eye out for an upgraded Air Compressor module - GM released an update that is heavier duty and more water-resistant than the first design. I don't remember the part number, but my dealer included the upgrade with my quote.

Oh, and the only "easy" way to test the modules is with a Tech 2 tool. Otherwise it's lots of testing with a 12-volt source and a couple of multimeters and oscilliscopes...
