Question about BMW 328

1 Answer

I have a 1996 328i BMW. I am having trouble with the front passenger side tire. I had the car towed to a mechanic today. He said the strut and spindle need to be replaced. How much should a repair job like this cost with used parts? I don't want to get ripped off.

Hi, i work at a professional automotive shop in vacaville, california, our labor rate is 85 per hour but we are the lowest labor rate in town. depending on the labor rate at the shop you have the vehicle at, the labor hours in alldata(the labor quote program we use) the bill time would be about 2.9 hours including both repairs, but you will likely need an alignment after the repairs so factor in an extra 69-109 dollar for that. note: the alignment is needed due to suspension changes being made that affect the alignment of the vehicle(the way the wheels point down the road). now, if using the supplied parts from the shop even though they are used, there is always a mark up of price, if you were to supply the parts(go get them yourself and bring to the shop) you would not iccur the mark up but may not be able to get any warranty on the repair. this is why the mark up of course, the shop gives a warranty, and charges the mark up to cover possible repairs having to be performed twice. in my opinion, the repair would likely cost about 250-375 in labor, and parts should be about 200-260, with the alignment, maybe 530.00-715.00 would be expected for this repair. one last thing, to use a known good used spindle is acceptable, okay, repair- but you should replace the strut with new not used, they are wearing items, you will have no idea what condition the used strut is in even it looks good, it may not be and you would have the to have the repair performed again. oh, and get the warranty in writing at any shop you go to, a lot of times shops will have expressed warranties, but when you go back to get a warranty repair completed, they will not have it on any contract and will not honor their " expressed warranty "

Sounds like you should have the alignment checked on an alignment machine on all 4 wheels.Once you get those readings and an expert alignment mechanic's estimate on repair, only then will you know the correct repairs needed.

What is the proper sequence for rotating tires?

My understanding is that with radial tires that are in use today, you should rotate front to back on same side. Not side to side.

When i hit a bump in the road with my chrysler pacifica it sounds like the passenger side wheel is goin to fall off.

Check the lug nuts..
Could be a bad front end bushing or could be a bad ball joint.
Check for re-calls too..
Jack up the front end (be safe) leaving the pssngr tire hanging free.. Move tire left to right.. You should find out what is going on..
