1999 lexus LX470 does the timing mark on the left bank line up with the single dot or the double dot if i line up with the double dot (as per manual) the pully for the timing belt points down 180 degr


looking from the front of the engine , the pulley mark on the LH cam pulley lines (12o'clock) up with the centre of the 2 notches and the RH lines up (12 o'clock) with the single notch. On the crank one mark will be lined up with a single notch at about the 1 o'clock position and another at the 3 o'clock position lined up with a series of dots. Ensure that you have the piston on TDC no1 first and align the crank marks first.

Timing the Cam to the Crank

There are several ways to time the cam to the crank. Be sure to check the manual before you install the timing chain or belt.

  • Some timing sprockets are properly timed when the marks face each other.
  • On others, there must be a certain number of chain links between the marks.
  • Sometimes chains have colored links that must be aligned with the marks on the sprockets.
  • Some overhead cams have a mark on the cam gear that lines up with a mark on the cylinder head when the timing mark on the damper is at the TDC mark.
Align the timing marks for the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets before removing the timing belt or chain.

If the old parts are available, carefully compare the new gears or sprockets with the old ones. Check the keyway and timing marks just in case there might have been an error made in manufacturing. Sprockets are sometimes stamped backward. Its much better to find the problem during assembly, rather than waiting until problems show up after reassembly and reinstallation.

Maintaining Valve Timing

During a valve job, it is essential to keep the timing chain or belt in place to maintain correct valve timing. Position the number one cylinder at TDC. Some overhead cam engines use a single long chain for a cam drive. The chain can be wedged against its guides with a tapered block of wood.

Some engines have a lower and upper chain. These engines do not require special attention to wedging the chain. Be sure to look for hidden head bolts and check the repair manual before removing the OHC head.

How to put back the timing belt


line up the lines on the belt with the dots on the sprockets and you cant miss.there is also two small dimples on the cover behind the cam sprockets that you can use to line up dots on face of cam sprockets with.the belt should have marks to indicate which side faces outward toward front of vehicle.turn crankshaft until dot on its sprocket is in roughly the five oclock position.align solid line on belt with this dot(area of belt with words on it will need to be between cam sprockets.i find it helpful to wedge a piece of cardboard between belt and lip on oil pump to hold belt in position on crank sprocket.next align the next solid line with the tooth on the DRIVERS cam sprocket that has the dot on it.....this shoul be roughly two oclock position.lastly align the hashed line on belt withdot on passenger side cam sprocket....this will be in roughly the 11 oclock position.loop remainder of belt behind tensioner pulleyand set tension.as long as themarks on the belt line up with marks on sprockets properly you cant miss.

I have found the crankshaft marks but I cannot find marks to align the to over head cams on my car, the dohc are run from 1 wheel. I am trying to re-align the timing belt as i think they have gone off.


if it's a dual overhead cam then each head has two cams and two pully's, a single overhead cam engine has one cam and one pulley on each head. if the belt has more than 60,000 miles on it you should replace it. you need to find out if the engine is an interference engine or not to determine the level of damage caused if the belt has jumped or slipped. your overhead cam timing marks are usually on the cam faces and the backing plate behind the cam or sometimes there's two marks on the cam that you align with the surface of the head behind them. the first thing you need is a diagram of the belt routing and mark positions because timing marks are very important especially on an interference engine. starting or cranking an interference engine with the timing marks misaligned can bend all your valves or even punch holes in your pistons! so proper alignment is crucial, good luck.

How to set timming belt,cant find mark for crankshaft 3.0L


Timing belt removed, static timing was not set before removing timing belt.

[Set Static Timing:
No.1 piston is brought up to TDC before removing timing belt.

Cam gear has a punchmark on face of gear, and this mark aligns with one single tooth. There is a matching punchmark on the Timing Belt Rear Upper Cover.

Facing the cam gear, the mark is to the upper right. There is an 'egg shape' of the timing belt upper rear cover, in this spot. This punchmark is in that 'egg shape', and is close to a bolt hole. The cam gear mark lines up with the Timing Belt Rear Upper Cover, mark.

The crankshaft gear has a punchmark on the face. It lines up with one single tooth. There is a corresponding punchmark on the lower right side. An alignment mark)

Should be a round punchmark on the face of the crankshaft gear. It lines up with a single tooth. Wipe the gear clean, use a little carb cleaner. (NO flames, or sparks nearby, well ventilated area)

Barring you cannot find the crankshaft mark, find the camshaft alignment marks, make sure they are aligned with the alignment, (Punchmark), on the Timing Upper Rear Cover.

Count the teeth in the timing belt. There should be 133 teeth on the belt.

There is 43 teeth in-between the timing mark of the camshaft, and the timing mark on the crankshaft.

(43 teeth in-between the Right Side Camshaft mark to crankshaft mark, 43 teeth in-between the Left Side Camshaft mark to crankshaft mark)

There should be 40 teeth in-between the two cam gears.

I need a diagram to sincronize the timing belt of my isuzu tropper 3.2 sohc


if this is 6VD1 engine it has single cam gear each head, but is still a 2 cams per head, engine
if belt has broke or you have turned any gear you must remove rocker covers to check positions of camshafts front lobes are in certain spot as well as timming mark on belt driven cam gear to cover
this cam gear is a 3:1 ratio (3 turns of cam gear = 1 turn of cams)

How do i position the timing marks when replacing my cam belt

Your cam gear can only fit one way and if you look at the cam gear, you will notice that there is a small hole in the gear close to the center, somewhat in between two of the large holes.
Position that small hole at the 12:00 PM and look through the hole.
You should be able to see a timing mark through the hole on the head. The mark should be dead center.
At the bottom, the crank woodruff key will be at 12:00 PM.
Also on the back side of the timing gear on the crank closest to the block, is a notch "V" which you line up with a dot on the block.
You should see the two line up with the key in the 12:00 PM position.
Put the belt on, when you set the tension, a good way to check it, is to find the longest span between the tensioner and the gear.
Take your fore finger and thumb and try to twist the belt. It shouldn't twist more than 45 degrees.

1997 nissan pathfinder timing off. I replaced water pump(behind timing belt). Timing "gears" got moved (two top ones). I don't know how to make sure everything is lined back up correctly.Any ideas?


The cam sprockets should have marks on them (dimples) that should align with marks on the rear timing cover. There should also be a similar dimple on the crankshaft timing sprocket. These will align with their respective marks when the engine is at TDC. The alignment marks are in the following locations as you look at the front of the engine: RH cam sprocket at approximately 11:00, LH cam sprocket at approx 1:00, Crankshaft timing sprocket at approx 4:00 or 5:00. IF you can't find the marks on the cover, put the marks on the sprockets in those approximate positions and set the belt by using a belt tooth count between the marks. Cam to cam should be 40 teeth between the cam marks. Between the LH sprocket and the crank mark should be 43 teeth. You can check TDC by removing your number 1 cylinder spark plug and carefully inserting a long screwdriver and watching the rise/fall as you hand crank the crankshaft into position (which is much easier with the plugs out)

Belts


Timing belt has marks on it that refer to the cam marks and the crank gear. Looking at the engine from the front, the timing belt should drape over the two cam gears, with 40 cogs between them on the belt. The timing belt should have 42 or 43? cogs between the driver cam mark and the mark on the crank gear. The way i've installed mine is to put the belt on the driver side cam and crank, and then put it on the passenger side cam. You'll need to lock the tensioner clockwise about 70-80 degrees to get enough clearance to install the belt.

Water pump


This is one of the most frusterating things to do because of the very limited space inside the engine, but you will have to remove the radiator the fan blade, all the hoses, the balancer, move the alternator, remove the timing belt cover and all the serpentine belts, remove the timing belt "MARK THE BELT WHERE IT ORIGINALY WAS OR YOU WILL MESS THE TIMING UP AND POSSIBLY THE ENGINE!!!", Remove water pump the reinstall new one, the assemble everything back together!! GOOD LUCK ITS A PAIN IN THE @$$!!!!
