Question about 2002 Dodge Neon

I dropped my transmission pan to drain the fluids and filter. I replaced the pan with the rubber gasket that came with the new filter and tightened all the bolts back in. I replaced the transmission fluid and drove my car the next day and it worked just great. I checked the ground the following day and there was a puddle of transmission fluid underneath the car and my car would not go forward and backwards. Do you think the rubber gasket failed because I didn't use any gasket sealant? The instructions with the rubber gasket said to not use any sealant whatsoever with it. What should I do next? I have to get my car back and running and fix this leak quick. Please help!

Yes, it's a leak and most likely is caused by the gasket that wasn't properly installed and has slipped.
Yes, on rubber gaskets you shouldn't use sealants - they react with the rubber and destroy each other.
Take it out and install it again - make sure the bolts are tighten on a criss cross pattern. Personally i would just put a simple gasket and a sealant - less problems on the long run than the rubber.

Why did you interfere with it in the first place ,auto boxes never need draining only the odd top up,that aside lift car up and have a look as the fluid level has dropped hence the car will not move,i suspect that you havent fitten the gasket correctly and its out of position and the fluid is running out ,I cannot think of any other reason than you havent positioned the gasket correctly and its missed a couple of bolts holes

Drain the Transmission Fluid and Replace the Filter
Raise the car with ramps or a floor jack and support it with jack stands. Find the lower cover of the torque converter housing. Turn the torque converter until you find the drain plug. Place a drain pan beneath the drain hole, remove the plug and drain the fluid.
Remove the cooler lines at the transmission and flush them with compressed, low pressure air. Be careful during this step; fluid may shoot from the other cooler line.
Place a large drain pan beneath the transmission. Loosen the retaining bolts on the oil pan with a socket wrench until they are within a few turns of removal. If the seal doesn't break on its own, gently tap it with a rubber hammer. Fluid will drain from the edges of the pan.
Remove the pan retaining bolts when the fluid stops draining. There is still transmission fluid in the pan. Hold the pan carefully and drain as much as you can into the drain pan.
Scape the old gasket material from the mating surfaces on the oil pan and the transmission. Discard the old gasket. Clean the magnet in the pan. Clean the pan and the mating surfaces with a solvent and a clean, lint-free cloth. Replace the magnet and allow the pan to air dry.
Employ a socket wrench to remove the bolt that holds the filter onto the transmission. Some models may have two bolts. Pull the filter and any old seals or gaskets from the transmission. Install a new filter assembly, including any required seals or gaskets.
Put a new gasket on the oil pan and reinstall it on the transmission. Tighten the retaining bolts to 79- to 119-inch pounds with a torque wrench. Replace the cooler lines on the transmission and the drain plug on the torque converter.

How do you change transmission fluid filter


There is a transmission pan on the bottom of the car, it will have about 15 bolts. If there is a drain plug use that to drain the fluid before taking that pan off. If there is not a drain plug I usually slowly loosen all the bolts with one corner coming down faster until it start draining from one corner. You won't get all of it out like this but you will get it good enough to drop the pan. Keep catch bucket under it the whole time. Once you get the pan off dump out the excess fluid, pull off the gasket and clean off any remaining pieces of the gasket. The good gaskets can be used again but I as a rule of thumb always replace with new. After fully drained clean up the mounting area on the transmission and clean up the pan. This includes cleaning off the magnet in the pan of all the metal shavings. If you did not have a drain plug I would HIGHLY recommend putting one in at this point...they are cheap. Now, the filter is the pan looking device that is attached to the exposed transmission. These are just a rubber gasket holding them up in there so pull and twist. The new one will have the replacement on it. You will just have to push the new one into place. Once everything is cleaned, the magnet is back in place and the filter is in place you are ready to put the pan back. You should be able to put the gasket on and then push the bolts through and be held in place. Finger tighten all bolts in place first and then tighten them down. Very important not to over tighten and to do these with very consistent and even pressure. I alternate and criss cross as I tighten. A torque wrench would be advised. If you over tighten these you will crush the gasket and have leaks and you will have to get a new gasket and start over. Make sure the car is fully cooled before doing this. That fluid really holds the heat.

raise and secure on stands. loosen transmission pan bolts one at a time, starting back to front. do not completely remove them just yet. have a bucket or pan ready to catch about 1 gallon of fluid.when all are loose gently pry downward on rear of pan to break seal.careful..fluid will come out at this point.one at a time remove rear bolts to allow pan to drop a little at a time.once pan is removed,remove old filter. clean pan and all mating surfaces. make sure there is no oil or grease on gasket surfaces. install new filter and filter gasket(small round rubber gasket).install new gasket and pan. tighten bolts evenly but dont over tighten.refill with clean fluid and check for leaks.make sure to check fluid level after each quart is added. engine should be running to get proper reading.too much or too little can damage your transmission.

Gear selection is slow


Check your tranmission fluid level, if its low it can cause your transmission to shift slower, if its drastically low your transmission will slip in and out of gears or free rev (act like its in neutral) under acceleration or when shifting to a higher gear. If your fluid level is good, then you need to change your transmission filter. If your not mechanically inclined, take your vehicle to a shop and have them replace your filter for you, any repairs or maitnance envolving your transmission can easily go bad and potentially destroy your transmission if you do something wrong.

1. Buy new filter & transmission pan gasket

2. Raise vehicle, block tires, and use jackstands (never rely on any type of jack to hold the vehicle up.) and get a container or drain pan to catch the old transmission fluid.

3. Put drain pan or container under your transmission pan, start loosinging the bolts that hold the pan to the transmission. If you loosen the bolts alittle at a time you should be able to minimize spilling fluid everwhere and be able to catch it in your drain pan easier. (if your transmission has a drain plug remove it before loosening the pan bolts, this is not very common though and if you have a drain plug your lucky) once the majority of the fluid has drained from loosening the plugs, continue to loosen bolts so you drop the pan easily cause its gonna be full of fluid (unless you have the drain plug, if you do the pan should be virtually empty and you can remove it fully without alot of mess).

4. Locate the bolts that hold your filter to the transmission, be sure to only remove the bolts that hold the filter. Use the new filter for a visual aid so you can be 100% sure your only removing the filter. (The filter is bolted to a metal cover plate that houses the transmission clutch assemblies, spring valve assemblies, and floating shutter pins and they all operate under hydraulic pressure). Once the bolts are out of the old filter you should be able to slide the goose neck of the filter out of the filter port (again use the new filter for a visual aid) The goose neck should have a rubber o-ring type seal (or equivilent) make sure its on the old filter when you pull it, If its not then gently feel in the port and make sure the seal isnt sticking inside the port.


****** If you were to remove the cover plate thinking it was the filter, the hydraulic slide valves would move and you could seriously damage your transmission turning a $30.00 problem into a 1500.00 problem. I speak from experiance, so please use the new filter for a visual, I can't stress it enough*

5. Clean the pan's gasket area maticuliously, removing all of the old gasket, do the same to the transmission. Prep the pan side of your new gasket (I like using permatex gasket sealer) and install it to your transmission pad. (you can do this before you clean the transmission's gasket area so the permatex has time to adhear to the pan while you clean the gasket area on the transmission)

6. Using transmission fluid lube up the new filter's o-ring and slide it into the filter port. line up the bolt holes and start puting the filter bolts back in, tightening them evenly much like you would do to lug nuts if you had to change a tire.

7. Now get your pan and prep the other side of the pan gasket (gasket should be well tacky and sticking to the pan at this point) once the gasket is prep'd line the pan up with the transmission and begin installing the pan bolts tighten them the same way you did the filter bolts,

**Note**FWD** Depending on your vehicle's make/model, you may have to drop one of the control arms to remove the pan.

**Note**RWD** Depending on your vehicle's make/model, you may have to remove the cross member to remove the pan -or- drop the drive shaft, remove the bell housing bolts (bolts through transmission into engine block) remove the starter, and flywheel cover remove the bolts that connect your torq converter to your flywheel and slide the transmission back from the motor far enough so the transmission pan is no longer under the cross member.

TO DO A TRANSMISSION FLUID CHANGE YOU NEED HAVE TRANSMISSION FLUID ON HAND YOU NEED TRANSMISSION FILTER AND GASKET.YOU NEED 3/8 WRENCH THE RATCHET TYPE WITH METRIC SOCKETS. YOU NEED JACK TO RAISE VECHICLE SUPPORT VECHICLE ON JACK STANDS.YOU NEED A DRAIN PAN. ONCE YOU GET VECHICLE OFF GROUND.PLACE DRAIN PAN UNDER TRANSMISSION OIL PAN REMOVE OIL PAN DRAIN BOLT.LET FLUID DRAIN OUT IN DRAIN PAN THEN SCREW DRAIN PLUG BACK IN PLACE DONT OVER TIGHTEN.REMOVE OIL PAN AND GASKET. BESURE TO HAVE PAPER TOWEL ON HAND.MAKE SURE TRANSMISSION OIL PAN GASKET SURFACE CLEAN BEFORE INSTALLING NEW PAN GASKET. ONCE TRANSMISSION OIL PAN REMOVED. I didn't read about running the engine at all during the transmission fluid change. --- Removal & Installation 4L60E/4L65E To Remove:
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Place a drain pan under the transmission.
  3. If equipped with a drain plug, drain the transmission fluid.
  4. If necessary, remove the bolts and position aside the range selector cable bracket for clearance while lowering the pan. It is not necessary to remove the cable from the lever or bracket.
  5. Remove the catalytic converter.
  6. Remove the oil pan bolts from the front and sides of the pan only.
  7. Loosen the rear oil pan mounting bolts about 4 turns.
  8. Lightly tap the oil pan with a rubber mallet in order to loosen the pan and allow the fluid to drain.
  9. Remove the remaining oil pan bolts.
  10. Remove the oil pan and the gasket.
  11. Remove the filter by twisting and pulling on it.
  12. Remove and discard the filter seal. The filter seal may be stuck in the pump; if necessary, carefully use pliers or another suitable tool to remove the seal.
  13. Clean the transmission and the oil pan sealing surfaces with solvent, and air dry. You must remove all traces of the old gasket material.
To Install:
  1. Coat the new filter seal with transmission fluid.
  2. Install the new filter seal into the transmission case. Tap the seal into place using a suitable size socket.
  3. Install the new filter.
  4. Install the oil pan and new gasket. Tighten the bolts alternately and evenly to 97 lb in (11 Nm).
  5. Install the catalytic converter.
  6. If previously removed, install the range selector cable bracket and bolts. Tighten the bolts to 18 lb ft (25 Nm).
  7. Apply a small amount of sealant GM P/N 12346004 (Canadian P/N 10953480), or equivalent to the threads of the oil pan drain plug, if equipped.
  8. Install the oil pan drain plug, if equipped. Tighten the plug to 13 lb ft (18 Nm).
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10. Fill the transmission to the proper level with DEXRON® III transmission fluid.
  11. Check the COLD fluid level reading for initial fill only.
  12. Inspect the oil pan gasket for leaks.
4L80E/4L85E To Remove:
  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  2. Place a drain pan under the transmission oil pan. Drain the transmission fluid and install the plug. Tighten the drain plug to 13 lb ft (18 Nm).
  3. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
  4. Remove the transmission crossmember.
  5. Disconnect the range selector cable end from the transmission range selector lever ball stud. NOTE: It is not necessary to remove the selector cable from the bracket.
  6. Remove the transmission range selector cable bracket. Reposition the bracket and cable.
  7. Remove the oil pan bolts. NOTE: The transmission oil pan gasket is reusable. Replace as needed.
  8. Remove the oil pan and gasket.
  9. Remove the magnet from the bottom of the pan, if necessary.
  10. Remove the oil filter and neck seal.
To Install:
  1. Clean the transmission and the oil pan sealing surfaces with solvent.
  2. Install the filter neck seal and filter.
  3. Install the oil pan gasket to the pan.
  4. Install the magnet into the bottom of the pan, if necessary.
  5. Install the oil pan and bolts. Tighten the oil pan bolts to 18 lb ft (24 Nm).
  6. Install the transmission range selector cable bracket. Tighten the bolts to 18 lb ft (25 Nm).
  7. Connect the range selector cable end to the transmission range selector lever ball stud.
  8. Install the transmission crossmember. Tighten the fasteners to 70 lb ft (95 Nm).
  9. Install the transmission mount nuts. Tighten the nuts to 30 lb ft (40 Nm).
  10. Remove the transmission jack.
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12. Fill the transmission to the proper level with DEXRON® III transmission fluid.

I just want to know where you add the transmission fluid in a dodge durango? i can't find it


Drive the Durango for 15 to 20 minutes to warm up the transmission fluid. When the fluid is warm, it will drain better and remove more contaminants from the engine. Raise and support the front of the Durango on ramps or jack stands. Place a large drain pan beneath the transmission.

Loosen the transmission pan retaining bolts with a socket wrench. Remove the bolts, but leave one at each of the four corners of the transmission pan. Slowly loosen the remaining bolts a little at a time.Fluid should begin to drain from the seal on the transmission pan. If the pan is stuck, break the seal by gently prying it loose or tapping it with a rubber mallet.

Support the pan with one hand and remove the bolts on one side of the pan. Allow the transmission fluid to drain until it stops. Remove the two last bolts. Remove the pan and drain the rest of the fluid.

Remove the three screws that hold the filter onto the transmission. Note that these screws may be Torx style. Install a new transmission fluid filter.

Clean the transmission pan and the magnet with solvent. Remove the old gasket material from the transmission pan. You may need a scraper to remove it all. Clean the mating surfaces with a lint-free cloth soaked in solvent. Let the pan air dry.

Put the new gasket on the pan and align them. Remove the gasket, apply a few drops of adhesive on the pan and replace the gasket. Realign the gasket before the adhesive dries.

Replace the pan onto the transmission and replace the retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts in a crisscross fashion to 150-inch pounds with a torque wrench. Return the Durango to level ground.




Refill the transmission with new fluid a little at a time, while checking the level often. Continue to add transmission fluid until it passes the "Add" mark on the dipstick, but doesn't pass the "Full" mark.

Start the engine, shift the transmission through all the gears and place the gear selector back in "Park." Recheck the transmission fluid level and add more fluid if needed. Don't overfill the transmission.

Replace the dipstick into the filler tube. Turn off the engine.

Transmission Fluid and Oil Filter Changing
REMOVAL PROCEDURE
1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lift Points.
2. Place drain pan under pan
3. Remove oil pan bolts from front and sides only.
4. Loosen the rear oil pan bolts approximately four turns.
5. Lightly tap the oil pan with a rubber mallet or pry to drain the fluid from main case.
6. Remove the oil pan bolts from rear oil pan and gasket.
7. Remove front oil pan bolts leaving one corner bolt in loosely.
8. Lightly tap oil pan with rubber mallet or pry to drain fluid.
9. Remove the following remaining components:
^ The front oil pan bolts
^ The oil pan
^ The gasket
10. Remove the oil filter bolts and filter.
11. Clean the following components:
^ The transmission case
^ The front adapter case
^ The oil pan gasket surfaces with solvent
^ Air dry
^ All traces of gasket material must be removed
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Install the gasket.
2. Install the oil filter.
3. Install the bolts.
^ Tighten the transmission oil filter bolts to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
4. Install the front oil pan.
5. Install the front oil pan gasket
6. Install the front oil pan bolts
^ Tighten the front oil pan bolts to 11 Nm (96 inch lbs.).
7. Install the following components:
^ Install the pan
^ Install the gasket
^ Install the bolts
^ Tighten the oil pan bolts to 11 Nm (96 inch lbs.).
8. Refill the transmission with DEXRON III through oil pan fill plug on the side of the (main case) oil pan. Fill the transmission to lower edge of oil
pan fill. Fill plug opening using and oil suction gun.
^ Tighten the oil pan fill plug to 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.).
9. Lower the vehicle.
10. Check the transmission fluid level. Refer to Transmission Fluid Checking Procedure.

Get new fluid, pan gasket and filter.

Put vehicle on ramps.

Starting at one corner, use ratchet to loosen and remove bolts from pan. Be sure to have a drain pan directly under the corner that drops to allow fluid to be collected. Do not remove any bolt before loosening all the bolts first, and slowly work from the same corner. You do not want to bend the flange on the pan.

Drop pan out of the way, remove/clean away old gasket, clean up pan, and pan bolts, apply light coating of gasket sealer to flange and apply new gasket.

Remove and replace filter. Check pan mating surfaces on tranny and make sure they are clean.

Reinstall pan into place by starting all bolts before tightening. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN BOLTS OR THE PAN WILL LEAK! Rotate around the pan, tightening each bolt slightly to no more than about 10 ft ponds of torque. A 1/4 inch ratchet is best used for this procedure.

Refill tranny with the amount of fluid removed into the drain pan.

This procedure will not replace any fluid in the torque converter, and generally most vehicles have no way of changing the torque converter fluid.
