However the guy i got the truck from told me he had them cut off to make the pipes louder.see the problem is with this i have had it at a shop where i live and they fixed my truck and told me that my check engine light was gonna keep coming on cause someone removed the catalytic converter. The message read Catalytic defiency in engines bank one and two.that was fine cause my truck ran. Then i broke down this weekend out of town and these guys are trying to tell me that my truck wont run without the converter. I just wanna know if these guys are trying to get me for my money. a 7 or 8 year old car is to young to go wrong all the time. Still there can be more than one thing that ends its life or gets out of tolerance. Without the diagnostic tool, it is virtually impossible to tell what is wrong. I know technicians opening the hood and still can't tell what is wrong, till they did some tests. I think you have to trust the tech you let to the car. I think it should be a guy who knows the Chevy the best and the one who has the right equipment.

2003 Chevy Suburban - runs ok , have truoble code po-135 concernig 02 sensor - need code explained ?

The O2 sensor is primarily to help with emissions. It measures the amount of oxygen in the exhaust enabling adjusting the fuel air ratio to make sure the amount of oxygen is just right to burn up all of the fuel. This perfect scenario is what is needed to enable the catalytic converter to operate efficiently. 3-Way catalytic converters actually work amazingly when provided exhaust with no unburned hydrocarbons and no excess oxygen. This is what is called a closed loop solution. The vehicle will also be equipped with an open loop solution - a solution that does not use the O2 sensors. This may have a minor effect on fuel mileage but the vehicle should run without much trouble.

DTC P0420 Catalyst System Low Efficiency Bank 1

You will find a bad O2 Sensor behind the converter or a bad catalytic converter on the bank 1 side of the exhaust manifold. This is the one on the drivers side.

The Ford guys you are going to are absolute morons. The engine light likely indicates misfire(s) codes. maybe catalyst inefficiency, but that would be due to the misfiring. Take it to a decent shop that has been in your area for a long time, tell them to tune it up and diagnose it properly. Ford trucks have a very common problem with bad coil packs and coil pack extensions. I can almost promise you this is your problem. Mention coil packs to the mechanic just to twig his memory and he can check his scanner for which ones are suspect.

Have a 2003 Chevy Impala. Check engine light remains on. Scan showed O2 sensor. Could it be a vaccum leak?

Bank 1 is the rear O2 sensor, but experience says to change both. The front one is right behind the engine in the middle of the engine compartment. The rear O2 sensor is on the top of the exhaust pipe, just behind the catalytic converter. But the same code that shows it is the O2 sensor (which is P0420), is the same code for the catalytic converter, or a vacuum leak. Make sure if you do change the catalytic converter, ensure that the new one is OBD-2 compliant. And the vacuum leak could possibly come from the manifold gasket. Let me know what the problem was!
