Question about 2003 BMW 330

1 Answer

2003 BMW 330CIc 3.0L, alternator went out. Had alternator rebuilt at professional alternator shop, had bench tested, high output 15.2. After installing new alternator, battery light would pop on. Couldn't figure out why, when battery light was on I was only pulling 11.53 at battery and at alternator and at up front jumping positions. I purchased a new battery (Ultima-spiral gel cells) and replaced the fuse link. Everything was fine. Ran about a week, one day I start up and battery light stays on, I check all the points mentioned above and get about 11.53v. I disconnect the neg cable wait a few seconds then reconnect, start up car again and battery light goes out, check all the points again and I'm getting readings from 14.2 to 14.4. For about a month I've been going through this, if the battery light comes on when I start up, I disconnect the neg and reconnect, it only takes a few seconds, but it still isn't correct. By the way I drove it with the battery light on with the old battery and it drained it down, had to recharge it. It only does this at start up every once in a while, never when I'm driving along. I can shut off my car run into a store come out start up and the battery light will stay on, shut down, disconnect, reconnect, and it will run ok for 3 to 5 days then do it again.

I need year--make--model to try to look up wiring diagram for your vehicle charging system?
In the past, I've had auto stores tell me my generator was working properly. I had already tested it, I knew it was faulty. When he said it was good, I asked to look at his test meter and he went to backing up, wouldn't let me see it. He finally admitted the rebuilt generator was faulty. He said he didn't have another that would fit my vehicle, it was still under warranty, needless to say, I never went back there again. I'm not saying that all auto stores would do that? I'm just saying if you can test your charging system, yourself, it does help.

Were were told pure nonsense by those mechanics

Forget other folks vehicle problems
All vehicles worldwide have many issues

They can do a Parasitic Current Test -- by leaving all the doors
closed & the key out of the ignition & have an Amp Meter in
either battery cable, then you wait for all modules & relay's to
time out (go to sleep)

IF-- you have a current draw over 50 to 60 Milli-Amps after an
hour --you have to start pulling fuses, to locate the circuit with
a problem & your battery drain

For your Alternator-- there are many tests & ways to do them,so do not assume the shops you went to, are on their game

My guess is that no shop has actually put time into the problem
& there may be many reasons why. That part I won't share with you,as it is not easy in that business dealing with the public, that hate you & the prices you charge.

Gone thru 3 alternaters in 5 months whats up

If the alternator passes the bench test but is not charging on the truck, you have a problem in the wiring between the alternator and the battery, or the alternator and the key switch.

Driving 2003 f-250 down rd, and all cluster on dash went out then stopped and put trk in park then trk died... Tried starting and everything was dead... Jumped trk off and started up drive for a few miles...

Was the alternator tested off the truck on a bench tester or on the truck with the engine running?
If bench tested check the fusable links at the starter switch and make sure one has not blown. It will stretch like a rubber band if it is blown.

How to repair an alternator for a 1994 bmw 740i?

you replace it, you do not repair it. your problem is that most parts stores carry only high volume rebuilts so you may play hell finding a rebuilt/exchange part for a BMW. there is a certain price to pay for owning such things and this is part of it, also many repair shops may not want to touch it even if you provide the part. However I am sure someone out there sells these parts, do a google search. Then i would find a foreign auto repair shop and pay them to put it in.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO REPAIR A ALTERNATOR

Take the alternator out and bring it to an alternator shop or electric shop to have it tested. They can confirm by testing the alternator with bench electric equipment if it is actually working. It is possible to swap out the alternator with an alternate OR have the alternator rebuilt for a nominal fee.

Sounds like you got a bad rebuilt alternator. I'd bring it back to where you got it from and if they have a way of bench testing it, then have them do that or just replace it.
