My car was over heating I went and change the thermostat it was shot. went back to normal.

I think that your engine may have seized up. If the new thermostat was installed in the correct direction, I believe that the radiator was plugged up, which caused the engine to over heat. But it could also be that the impellers in the water pump have eroded away. I have never heard of a sensor that shuts off the engine during an over heat event. Excessive heat may have damaged the new thermostat.

We were driving home lastnight and car over heated then died now it wont start. It turns over but wont start. Changed the thermostat. I dont think the fan is kicking on.

Very possible you have a blown head gasket. A compression test on your engine will verify that. When you changed thermostats, was your coolant clean, no traces of oil contamination? Have you checked your oil dipstick? A milky color would indicate water (coolant) in your oil, a sure sign of head gasket failure. Just depends how badly it overheated. But if it wont start, I'd say get a compression test.

Overheating,how would change the thermostat

YOU NEED A HAYNES REPAIR MANUAL.BUT YOU DRAIN OUT SOME COOLANT DOWN ENOUGH WHEN YOU TAKE THERMOSTAT HOUSING OFF TO GET TO THERMOSTAT.ANTIFREEZE WONT GO EVERY WHERE.TO GET STARTED YOU HAVE TO REMOVE RADIATOR SUPPORT COVER.AND THE AIR FILTER HOUSING.LOOSEN THE HOSE CLAMP.THEN DETACH THE HOSE FROM THERMOSTAT HOUSING.THEN REMOVE THERMOSTAT COVER MOUNTING BOLTS THEN REMOVE HOUSING.BE PREPARED FOR SOME COOLANT TO SPILL WHEN YOU REMOVE HOUSING AND BREAK THE SEAL.BE SURE TO REMOVE ALL TRACES OF OLD GASKET MATERIAL AND OR SEALANT FROM HOUSING COVER.THEN INSTALL THE NEW THEERMOSTAT IN THE HOUSING WITHOUT USING SEALANT.MAKE SURE SPRING END IS DIRECTED INTO THE HOUSING.APPLY CLEAN ANTIFREEZE TO THE NEW O - RING ON THERMOSTAT FOR LUBRICATION BEFORE INSTALLATION.PUT EVERYTHING BACK VISA VERSA.TORQUE THERMOSTAT HOUSING BOLTS TO 89 INCH POUNDS.PUT HOSES TIGHTEN HOSE CLAMP.FILL UP THE COOLANT SYSTEM CRANK CAR CHECK FOR LEAKS.

I have a service engine soon light on. I was told it was either the temp sensor or thermostat. replaced the thermostat and now the heat wont turn on.

Meaning your not getting any heat? I would suspect a higher temp thermostat was put in, and now its taking longer to get heat... Its also possible the thermostat is faulty... Either way, I would try a new thermostat again... The check engine light wont come on from a thermostat so change the CTS...

Starts when it wants too

If your car is the 1.6 they have two common faults -

Crank sensor & water coolant sensor for ECU (located in thermostat housing)

Not too expensive to get changed, fairly easy DiY
