Question about 1993 Cadillac DeVille

My 93 Cadi Devile will not start after having a new cathlytic converter installed due to the stock one going out on me on the freeway. The engine lost power and shut down and would not start back up. Took it to a shop and they did a diagnostic and said there was some how 50lbs of fuel pressure at the fule rail and there is spark going to the plugs and can't figure out why the engine won't start. They then told me after further checking that the timing is retarded or has jumped and is the reason the engine will not start. They also said that they do not want to work on this car because of possible existing damage. How do you change the timing chain and gear and do you think it's worth having it done?

    When I turn the key it does crank normally with no abnormal sounds that I can tell in the revolutions. However, prior to this, when I got the car it would have a hard time starting and then eventually turn over and start. It was like the battery was dieing or was being drained. At first we thought it was the altenator and we tested it by removing the positve cable and the engine kept running, naturally so the altenator was ok. So we replaced the battery anyway and later the same problem existed. The engine would still always start. Later, the engine was running weird like the fuel injectors were dirty or had a clogged fuel filter or the fuel pump was going out or something. 50lbs of pressure is probably why the cat burned up and why the engine was running like it was. How do you get that much fuel at the fuel rail? my dad said that the fuel pump was replaced about a year or two ago. The car would drive like it was losing power very hesitant at times and sometimes run smooth like nothing was wrong, (Is that the reason why the car was running like that because of the excess fuel and when it burn, it super heated the cat?) Until the day it lost total power and shut down on me and would not start back up. I looked under the car and the cat was cherry red. There was a slight bumping sound in the revolutions at that time but not now. This is the skinny on my problem any advise and or info on how to change the timing chain and gears would be much appreciated. Do you recomend changing the water pump at that time? I do understand the time and space one has to work with in doing this fix. I just need to know how to realign and set the timing. Is there somewhere on the net that I can see a video or diagram of the engine in question and how to do everything needed to fix my car? Thanks in advance, I know that this was alot to read, but I need help.

Thats kind of weird how you would have a cat failure and then as soon as it was replaced, your timing is off.. It doesn't make any sense, actually. If you can give some more details about this problem, I'd like to help more. (For example: when you turn the key, does it crank? If it cranks, do you hear any abnormalities in the revolutions? Etc)

To answer your questions: It is a pain in the neck to change the timing chain and gear. Its a lot of work. Even if you have air tools, you're still looking at several hours of experienced labor, just to get to the chain. Is it worth it? Thats a personal question that you must figure out, based on sentimentality, finances, etc.

My 93 Suburban 5.7L takes off too slow and hard to get it over 60 mph on the freeway


Have you replaced your air filter or checked you mass air sensor for debris or contamination?

All of my tail lights keep going out on my 93 devile sedan. I keep replacing them but they all keep going out. What could be the cause/s?


It sounds like you have a short in your rear end, auto electrician should be able to pin point the problem within half hour

Check engine light on always, then after driving a distance on freeway starts blinking. All fluids are fine. Even bought a new gas cap because other didnt seem to seal properly.


On some models when the check engine light is on then starts flashing you could be causing damage to the catalitic converter. you take this car and have the codes checked. converters are not cheap. let me know codes and maybe I can help

Could be gas related, could be ignition spark related. you will have to troubleshoot to find if spark is at plugs in the right time and sequence. also, you will need to know if you are getting fuel to your cylinders. Can't help anymore without being there first hand.
