First check the condition of the battery. <div> My problem was the ground wire connected to the thermostat housing. When loose the entire starting system is not completing the "loop". It was the only ground for the starting system and my transmission neutral safety solenoid would rattle and make a noise from the console when not connected. Try tugging on the wires at the top of the transmission and leading towards the thermostat. <div> The other problem with Acuras is the Main Relay. It has been documented to cause a no-start condition (but it will still "crank over"). It is under the dash by the steering column.</div></div>

It could and most likely is the starter itself. It is going out. Replace the starter or at the very least remove it and have it tested. The other possibility is that vibration has work a spot through the Positive wire insulation and it is grounding the circuit periodically. Since it is only effected when the starter is engaged and has no power to it the rest of the time you don't get any other signs of a short. Check the wires and if they are all good remove and test the starter. If you find a worn spot in the insulation repair the area and you should be good to go.

I have a 89 cutlass with a 2.8L motor when I try rn the key the car is not turning at all. what can cause that?

Bad starter, for one thing. It could be quite a few things, but you have to start somewhere. Do you hear a click from under the hood when you turn the key to start? If you do, and you know your battery is not run way down, then most likely the starter motor has failed and needs replaced.
If you don't hear a click or any noise from the engine with the key turned to start, it still could be a bad starter, but could also be a few other things. Always good to have things tested, especially when it is a free service at nearly all parts stores. Unfortunately, you have to take the starter off and bring it into the store for testing. So you would have to get handy with some wrenches and tools, or have a friend take it off for you. A salvage yard could sell you a starter for your car at about half the price of a new or reconditioned starter from a parts store.

My 1997 cavalier won't start but when I turn the key on the on position and turn the steering wheel in makes the starter click ...iv tryed everything any suggestions?

sounds like a stuck bendix spring with the clicking , have you hit the starter quite hard with a heavy hammer a few times to release spring ? if its not the starter the i'd say the fault is with the ign switch as you say turning wheel makes the clicking sound , i'd take off steering cowlings and check for any loose , burnt etc wiring to/from ign switch hope this helps

Will not start, battery is new, it just clicks and nothing. turn it off, try again and nothing, try again and it starts

Try cleaning and tightening well the battery connections along with the battery wires to the solenoid and starter motor.

Bad connections and low voltage of 12 volts can result in this anomaly.

When trying to start my Isuzu Axiom all I get is a Click.... After a few tries it eventually starts but it's rather annoying. We thought it might be the ignition switch or ignition lock cylinder but...

Hi, this is often caused by a dead spot on the starter commutator. I recommend you remove the starter and have it tested at your local parts chain. If you are handy, you may try taking it apart to see if cleaning the commutator and brushes will clear up the problem. Sometimes it's dirt and sometimes it's broken wires to the armature coils. A simpler test to do is the next time you're having trouble getting the starter to turn, try smacking it on the side with a hammer. That will usually get it to move off the dead spot to start and thereby verify the starter dead spot is the problem.

It sounds like you either need new starter brushes or a new starter. If you turn the key and the starter just clicks, try tapping gently on the starter with a metal bar. If the starter then turns over you should take it out and replace the brushes or put in a new or rebuilt starter. When you have to start tapping on the starter you may only have a few starts left.

Takeing about 5 turns on the key before starter

If you hear a "clicking" sound when you hit the key, it is likely the starter solenoid. Sometimes they stick, especially if its cold where you live. Hitting the key numerous times will jar it enough so the car will start, sometimes. You'll likely need to replace the starter if this is the case.
