Question about 2003 Chevrolet Malibu

1 Answer

My son has a 2003 malibu, with about 23,000 miles. Has had no problems until last friday (4 days ago) on a trip he stopped for gas, when he got back in wouldn't start, engine tries to turn but will not catch and start. Towed to a shop, was told fuel pump, but then they tried another key, car started and no further problem. Today went to start, same thing. Tried 3 keys no luck. GM dealer says I have to tow in and they can check, probably passlock system, starts at $220.00 for parts. A few comments here sound similiar, just checking to be sure. Any help is greatly appreciated. I don't want to get ripped off by dealer, but I desperatley need fixed. He has school and work.Thank you.

ok try this stick one of the keys in then turn on ignition and it will take about5-10 minutes watch the security light it will go out then turn it off and try to start the car if works fine then try it a couple days if goes out again then youll need to change the passlock on the end of the key lock. also check all the keys if they have a gold color to them go get a new key made all you keys might be getting worn out. if they not gold then you key lock passlock sensor getting worn out but is a pain in the *** to change in the dash. when you get a new key made turn ignition on with it and wait for security light to go out before you turn it off and try and start it to store the key new code.

Check that the theft system light is not flashing on you when trying to start it up. if it is, then it's not going to start since the car is in security mode. put the key in the ignition and turn it until the instrument panel lights light up and just leave it like that for 10 minutes until the theft system light goes off. turn the key back to off(don't take it out) and try to start it. it's a pain, espesially when you're in a hurry. to get it repaired at the dealer costs about $600-$800. I had mine done for $800.

SOURCE: gm passlock security system how to disable

Wiring diagrams can be found online, however i believe you can re-learn the key by leaving it inside the ignition tumblen and switch it to accesory. Then disconnect the b attery for about ten minutes and then try starting the car without taking the key out.

Just got my 2000 VW New Beetle with 3/4 tank of gas. Drove it 36 miles and its below 1/2 tank. Could it be the gas that they put in? Or something wrong with the car itself?

On just about every vehicle I have ever seen, the fuel gauge will move faster from 1/2 to 1/4 (I never let a tank run past 1/4. Bad for the fuel pump) than from full to 3/4 or 3/4 to 1/2.
Do a mileage check. Fill the tank until the pump stops, reset your trip or note your odometer miles. Dive a few days or a number of miles. Fill the tank again until the pump stops and not the amont it took to fill. Note the number of miles you put on and do the math.

worth checking the fuel tank for holes or there might be some fuel delivery pipes leaking badly. Or it might be an O2 sensor not giving correct signal to ecu thus consuming so much fuel.

Ask a garage to reset your computer, could be a recurring trip fault causing the car to shut down.

Clearing it might solve the problem - if not, the fault codes will tell you what the problem is!

if it's not going onto the ground, and it's not being burned, check the positive crankcase ventilation and the exhaust gas recirculation valves for oil seepage...also check your air filter, if its got oil on it replace the pcv valve.

2007 Chevrolet Colbalt LS - Not running at all!!!!

The first thing i would check into is the coil packs. If it sounds like a missfire (hard to hear on a small 4 cylinder). Also it sounds odd but the engine sometimes has an ignition fuse. If that fuse is blown there is a power wire short somewhere in the wiring harness. Also if the check engine light is on the gas consumption may be the O2 sensor. I have had sensors last for as little as 200 miles before on my truck. This dropped my mileage from 21 to 4 mpg.
