I have a 66 mustang and the dash lights do not work the stereoo works but all the lights on the dash are out when I turn the headlights on

"OK my dash and marker lights were out because the DRL module had failed.
I bet this is a fairly common problem so...before you go spending big bucks on a new one or even a few on a used one, why not see if the one you have is salvageable?
The Daytime Running Light module is located with other modules on a plate bolted to the driver's side kick panel. It's the biggest, black one and has DRL Module labeled right on it.
Because this is the module that produces the most heat and therefore is the most likely to fail, the motherless dogs who designed the 2002 Rio put it on the left side of the plate so that you have to move a harness and unbolt the plate to get at it. If you've got big shoulders and arms, getting the plate off is going to hurt. If you're left-handed, you're screwed.
Once you've got the module out and have had your crushed ribs bandaged, which were crushed while laying over the door sill to get under the dash, you pop off the module cover and check the solder side of the circuit board for bad solder joints around the main relay connections (that's the big white block on the board).
They run a fair amount of wattage through the relay, so it gets hot when it's on and cools when it shuts down. Over time this crystallizes the solder and forms a circular crack around the connection that gets bigger until it's essentially no longer connected to the circuit board and all your dash and marker lights go dark.
The motherless dog who designed the circuit could have avoided this by using a relay with a higher wattage rating (which would be bigger, making the module larger, but would run a lot cooler), but then we wouldn't have an expensive, consumable part to have replaced by the dealership would we.
Anyway, check the module for any burned components. If everything else looks OK, re-solder the connections (or have a friend who really knows how to properly solder electronic circuits do it otherwise you'll just finish what inadequate design started), pop the module back together, plug it in, test the lights and if working, reinstall it and the mounting plate - and for the love of God put a thick pillow on the door sill this time to protect your bruised ribs.

Before we start a lot of indepth diagnosis, would you please check to see if the dash light control is turned all of the way up? This is a small round knob, lower left of the instrument panel.

This is a problewm I have been researching. On the 91 Loyale there are two headlight relays. The relay for the left headlight also controls the instrument lights and the running lights. If the right relay is working and the left is not, the left headlight will be dim because of a back electrical path through the high beam indicator light on the dash, but the instrument and running lights will be out. I have been trying to find out where Subaru put these relays, but three Subaru service departments have been no help. One dealer's service department told me to remove the large bezel around the instrument panel. I did and the relays weren't there. Lots of luck.

Check all the bulbs at tail end for parking and brakes, test grounds and harness for trailer. Check fuses. clean batery terminals, Re instal head light swich properly and make sure all wires conect.

I have a 1995 ford mustang and im experiencing something kinda werid if i let the car sit for more than a couple of hours my dome light doesnt work when i open the door but i can pull the headlight switch...


If you have a light control module then that is probably failing. However if the dome light is activated by small switches in the door pillars it is possible that the contact points may be rusty or have a bad earth.

dash and parking light are on the same circuit through the switch, chek with a voltmeter in and out of switch

My dash lights quit working on my 98 Ford Mustang GT. I checked the fuse and my tail lights and brake lights work. everything else works. What else could it be.


the headlight knob is also a dimmer for the lights on the dash. try turning it all the way one side, then check fuse if still not working.

My sons 91 mustangs low beams went out together. the fuse was blown so we put another one in but they still wont work. any ideas?


I have a mustang and a common problem with the headlights is the in dash switch goes bad play around with the switch turning it on and off firmly and see if you get the lights to come and replace the switch ......also the headlights have a relay for them to located in the front around the lights trace the wires to locate the relay ...Hope this helps you out

I have no headlights on 1988 mustang gt turn signals brake lights and parking lights and dash lights all work but the head lights wont come on checked all fuses and relays there all good thanks


Check headlight lamps... then follow the wiring from the bulb connections back and make sure you're getting a good solid ground connection. It may have a loose, broken, severed grounding wire.. it's usually attached to the car body at some location not far from the headlights.

On my 1996 Mustang GT, when I turn on my headlights, my dashboard lights go out. Is that a fuse, ground or some other issue?


The proposed problem sounds like the problem I had with a 95 Mustang. Check the tail lights as well as the dash lights. If both are out when the headlights are switched on, the problem more than likely is with the headlight switch. The 95 had a poorly designed wire and plug configuration going into the switch. The wiring was too small and the plug would literally melt. The headlight switch and plug has to be replaced in this case. The problem was supposed to have been cleared with the 96 Mustang; however, a persistent problem may suggest checking the plug/switch combination.

Probably either a bad ground (broken wire, rust) or a bad headlight switch. The brake light circuit goes from the stop switch (Located up above the brake pedal) through the headlight switch, through the light bulbs to ground. The tail light circuit goes through the headlight switch, through the bulbs and to ground. The only things that are in common are the headlight switch (Is this the switch you replaced?) and ground.
