Question about 1992 Mercury Grand Marquis

What engine do i have

I was told I have a 5.4 or 54.1 engine. Obviously I do not know about engines. Is there a way to learn what engine I have under the hood without taking it apart? Does it say it somewhere on the engine itself or do I have to take it to a mechanic? I want to sell it but not sure what to say about the engine.

No need to take it to a mechanic, we are mechanics here on FixYa that can answer your question(s).

All 1992 Mercury Grand Marquis had are 4.6L = 281 cubic inch V8.

There should be a tag or sticker located within the Engine Compartment, possibly on the underside of the hood that has Engine Specifications.

Let me know if this helped, or if you have additional information or questions. Feel Free to contact me at FixYa.com!

    IF someone put a 5.4L in there instead of the 4.6L, then most likely the Engine Specification Tag was not changed and will be wrong. These tags or stickers are not easily changed out.

    Thanks for using FixYa.com...

    @goodfgirl196

    Thank you for the Rating and the Kudo's. You are entirely welcome.

    What was the end result? Was it the 4.6?

    Thanks;

Open the driver door. Either on the door itself, or on the frame (where door closes to; latch area) you shoudl find a decal that will give you information about the engine and tire specifications.

Here, you should find what size engine it is - 5.4L sounds right - but not 54.1. 5.4L indicates the amount of fuel distributed to the engine while it's running.

Also, you should be able to find this information on the hood of the car (bottom side of hood) or on the front most part of the frame (near radiator) where the hood comes down {above headlight(s) }.

If you do not find any of this anywhere on the vehicle in the places indicated above, I suggest visiting a local auto parts dealer as they can help you find this information.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

The gears on my car are not changing, could it be the transmision or the airflow meter?

automatic.?
first learn now to tell, if the engine lacks power ,or the tranny is slipping
that is easy.
1: increase speed, does RPM(tachometer) rise faster (independant) of road speed. (that is called, trans slip.)
2: the trans dont slip. so the engine rpms stay low (gears work) and
the engine has no power.
if the engine has no power, fix engine.

The trans is very complex. if it messes up post that and what it does
under all driving and gear selecton modes, and hills and flat ground.
why pick the air flow meter, MAF , the most expensive part of EFI sensors. why guess there is a very simple test for the MAF, just ask.
its all in the FSM or here.

How do i know if i have an electrical fan or is my fan operated by the belt 1994 dodge spirit

mparadise200,

Obviously your Spirit is a small front wheel drive vehicle which has a transverse mounted engine. Therefore, it will have an Electric Cooling Fan mounted directly behind the Radiator and operated by a Thermostat in the Hose connecting the Engine to the Radiator. Open the Hood and take a good look at everything under it. One can learn the basics by observation which will help you in many ways. Such as: Windshield Washer Reservoir, Coolant Recovery Tank/Filler, Automatic Transmission Dip Stick (Red Handle), Oil Dipstick (Yellow Handle), Power Steering Pump & Reservoir and many other things such as Serpentine Accessory Drive Belt(s) and Battery.

Why in cold weather start up smoke appears from under the engine dispersing at the front near side wheel.

This is normal. Look under the front nearside and you'll see a 3 inch diameter hole out of which the smoke is coming - This is designed to vent the fumes from a diesel 'pre-warmer' which obviously, on cold days, springs into action. It looks awful, but, so I'm told by Jaguar, is the way it's meant to be. I'm only passing on the info I got when I enquired about exactly the same thing so this isn't necessarily the complete answer and you may have other more serious issues, but it put my mind at rest when I was told this.

Disconnet the battary then the rpm unstable

I suggest checking engine wiring harness and Throttle valve as degraded wiring from 1993-1995 by MB because US made companies use a biodegradable insulation which gets cooked in the engine compartment.

Obviously if it is a large evap leak it isn't the gas cap, if your car has an evap canister have someone check this to see that it is operating properly and no leaks at hoses going in and out of it.
