Question about 2008 Pontiac G6

2 Answers

Misfiring I have about 45000 on my 2008 G6. I thought I had gotten some bad gas with all the flooding we have had here in the past few weeks but then the engine light came on. I have on star and the they said it was misfiring. Then when it would happen--it did feel like it misfired. Can the spark plugs be going bad the early and if so why?

The codes if mentioned by onstar should have been something like p0300 random cylinder misfire or p0301 cylinder # 1 misfire occurring,p0302 cylinder # 2 misfire occuring this would be helpful to know sometimes it will lead you to suspect cylinders as for what is causing this would take a little more investigating is the misfire because of a problem in primary side of ignition or secondary, primary side consisting of coil pack and secondary consisting of plug boot or wire assembly and sparkplug misfires can also be caused by lean conditions ie fuel injector not firing, intake leaks and so on. need to have codes read and repost before i could honestly say yes it is this part causing the problem and then we could discuss what lead to it,s failure

Check voltage, if okay I suggest will replace the fuel filter before looking at anything else. A clog filter will not allow the right amount of fuel to the engine. And cheap to replace over throwing other parts at the problem.

Well...my ball park guess on this is just a tune up. The engine light is usually showing a misfire. If the plugs are bad then the cylinder is not igniting the fuel and it is flooding out. With what is here this makes sense to me. Let me know what it does turn out to be.

Dosen't start right poor gas mileage

If you do not have a "check engine" light on, then one of the many unmonitored components may be bad.

To start, the engine has a "cold" start routine. This system uses a temperature sensor to activate a step-up in RPM and enrichens fuel mix. There may be 2 on your model. You want to look at the one that does not work the dash gauge.

Skipping can be a misfire. A misfire wastes fuel and gives poor power.
A dirty fuel injector can flood the engine causing hard starts. Dirty sparkplugs can cause similar problems.

On cold starts, sticking valve lifters can also make an engine miss and then clear up as the oil flows when heated.

Check your fuses the one for check engine light might be bad. Every time I had a misfire with my Kia the check engine like came on. You may also take it to an Auto Zone or a store that checks the computer of your vehicle for free. If it is a misfire there are a few remedies I know of

First if you haven't changed your spark plugs in the past few years you should look at replacing them.

Second older vehicles the gas tends to get sediment in it because you are not using all of the gas in your tank even if you run it out. I found that out because it would drive fine until I filled the tank up which in turn churned up the sediment from the bottom went through my gas line and caused a misfire. The easiest way to fix that is maybe a gas treatment which may break down the sediment. The harder and more expensive is drain the tank change the pump and the fuel filter. You don't need to drain the tank entirely to change both but it defeats the purpose of change both and still having sediment in the tank.

Third in order get the computer checked, change spark plugs, have leads checked, then use fuel treatment. Just so you know when you use fuel treatment it will run a little rough at the beginning because the sediment is being broken down give it a week or so to let it run its course.

good luck

My 2006 g6 sometimes will crank but not start. does it when cold and warm. sometimes you can try again and it will start other times it takes a few tries

tons of reasons.... depends on your troubleshooting feedback fouled plugs (change em) crappy gas (put a pint of gas cleaner in the tank at next fillup before you fill it) low fuel pressure (breach in fuel delivery?)
I assume you are not pumping the gas pedal at all, but if you are, do not do that. Leave your foot off ! If you do pump it, it will most easily flood it with gas and prevent ignition until the gas is cleared (you can clear a flooded system by pressing and keeping the gas pedal to the floor (once) and try to crank. Release the pedal immediately upon successful ignition revolutions.

i had a problem once with a temperature sensor there were two on mine one was for the gauge in dash and one was for fuel i was told that it make the computer send more gas if it is cold and if it goes out it tries to flood it mine would start and run for about a block or two then spit and sputter and eventually die and wouldnt start again fo about 30 mins so maybe you could change the temp sensor
