Question about 2003 Lincoln Town Car

1 Answer

Power Steering not working all the time....

It seems that the Power Steering is working intermittently. Sometimes it is very jerky and tight, other times it seems to be fine. Fluid level is perfect, serpentine belt it operating properly. Just took it back to the oil change place to see if something they did may have caused it, but they could not see anything wrong. We haven't noticed any weird noises while turning the car. I'm stumped.

My 2009 routan is having a problem at very low speeds.when i back out of a parking spot and move forward turning left or right the stearings struggles to makethe turn and is jerky but after ipick up s

The tight steering
The belt squeel
The jerky issues

All those tell you what the problem is

For me-- I stop using any vehicle with any issue
the first day I have any problem & switch to another

Then go to work diagnosing the problems

You know you have a steering system to have diagnosed

Can not guess to give the exact problem & if a part is needed

Only way to find vehicle problems is to stop using them
immediately & do testing to find something wrong

Problem is you have to spend hours studying to learn the
system first, even as a dealer or professional & you as the owner
have to pay for that

How could you tell if the power stearing pump is going out . It leaks p/s flu , could it also be that the hose is damaged?

If the power steering pump is on the way out, usually the steering will become jerky when turning. It may also develop a whine noise in the engine compartment. The fluid will appear foamy as it aerates and mixes with the fluid. Good news power steering pumps rarely fail, unless run out of fluid. It is more likely the pump front pulley seal is leaking (you should see a tract of fluid along the padding in the hood liner). The other possibility is a hose, usually the high pressure hose leaking at a compression fitting (where the rubber meets the steel ends). Check the fluid level and condition. Check the hood liner for traces of leaks, check underneath for drips, or extremely wet areas along the 2 hoses.

Power steering gets tight only turning to the right. Not all the time, cold or warm weather, and usually for a short period of time.

These are known for "heavy steering" feel in the first place. You have a sticking valve in the power steering box. I suggest a power steering fluid flush and replace with Mobil synthetic PS fluid. Eventually you may need to replace the power steering box but since it is intermittent this may improve things for a year or so and is MUCH less expensive.

My 08 Chevy Uplander makes a whirring noise when turning the steering wheel. Not a constant problem, seems to be intermittent, but have also received service message to check stability traction control....

the return line on the power steering pump maybe bad are plug and it may also be low on power steering and the drive belt if the car has over 40,000 miles on it then its time to change the drive belt as well Merry Christmas & Happy New Year as always wish you the best of luck Michigan Man

2005 equinox the intermittant power steering issue

The power steering is on this vehicle is electronically assisted. Meaning it does not have a power steering pump. The electric motor could be going out, pulling too much current at times, and tripping the breaker. The best thing to do is take it to the dealer, and have them inspect it.

Power steering pump vibrates

I have a similar problem. The power steering felt jerky just the moment you start and drive off. My mechanic flushed out the old fluid with a power steering flush fluid and replenish with new fluid and that did the trick. The old fluid looked clean in the resovior but down in the steering rack, its a different story. The fluid is dark and contained some sludge. No wonder the steering assist was jerky.
