Question about 1998 Oldsmobile 88
Before going through all that , these motors are know for bad intake gaskets, I would look at that before all of the other mess.

Bad rings or blown head gasket. You'll have to replace both to replace the rings so I would go ahead and replace the rings and Head gasket and have the valves checked while you have the head off. Paying a little more now is well worth it trust me.
