Question about 1985 Toyota Land Cruiser

Open Question

I'm having a hesitation when accelerating, on the highway mostly, in an 85 FJ60 4.2 L straight 6 that I just bought. It's when I "kind of" ease into acceleration that it hesitates for a split second. I put a timing light on the plug wires and and the number one was not firing on occasion and the plugs are nice and new. I'll replace the cap and adjust the spaces in the plugs as soon as I get home. Does this sound like anything that has happened to anybody else? The engine running on 70,000 miles after a rebuild. There was a carb kit put in about three years ago, so assume that maybe it was rebuilt. The truck has been sitting for awhile though. I'm just checking to see if anyone has had a similar experience. Thanks.

Sounds like the distributor advance is sticking for some reason. Is it mechanical?

SOURCE: Car has new fuel filter, plus gas line. It starts

Double checked my spark wires on the front cyls and found them to be bad on 2 of cyls. The tune-up at 60,000, I replaced with some cheap wires...looks like the ones on the spark plug end got brittle(maybe from heat or poor quality) and broke off with them still attached to the plug(had to use a long nosed pliers to get off). I also had one on the coil end that wasn't seated correctly and must have been arcing(hole burnt out side of coil box).

Anyway, I purchased some Autolite wires and cleaned out the burnt out slot on the coil box and that did the trick.

V6 owners...I only did the front 3 cyls, I will have complete the destined to fail back plugs on the weekend.

Hope this helps. And good luck!

When accessing a highway from a frontage road access should you begin accelerating as you approach the highway or wait until you are on the highway to incresse speed

Accelerate while on the "on ramp" until you reach the speed limit + posted on the highway... this way when you reach the highway you will be going the same speed(or close) as the other vehicles ..you can blend in easily.. and NOT cause an accident by going too slow!! On the way down the "on ramp".. start looking at the traffic coming on the highway to find an opening to ease into safely. Use your mirrors and BLINKER... (its easier to slow down a little than speed up)

Loss of power and shuttering when accelerating

You sure filter is facing flow correctly?:I'd check that first, some cars/trucks have in-line filters.

Hard start and engine hesitation at highway speed

The PO441 has to do with your HO2S 2 (Oxygen sensor). You need to check to make sure the wire is not off of the sensor and check the grounds to the Oxygen sensor. Could be a bad Oxygen Sensor. The other code has to do with your Evap system Purge solenoid circuit. Has to do with detecting an improper voltage level. Could be a shorted Purge solenoid.

Vehicle hesitates when you accelerate .

make sure you have the correct spark plugs(2)check the throttle position sensor on the car,as most people would be driving about with the throttle on the floor car feels fine.but as in normal driving anyone only uses the first half of the pedal and this is where most wear takes place and sometimes causes hesitation when driving.best of luck.
