Question about 2003 Mini Cooper

Open Question

I have a 2003 mini cooper s, manual transmission. I drove it four miles on a gravel road last week. Ever since, I hear a sound like a rock rattling around whenever I go above 50mph. It is very loud and over powers the sound of the radio. It sounds like it is coming from the engine closest to the driver. The car does not lose power, the noise is not affected by RPMs, fluid levels are fine. What could it be - just a rock?

SOURCE: CVT transmission fluid mini cooper 04 automatic

The manual has a mis print, according to MINI the correct oil to use is ESSO CVT Z2L 799 fluid and there are no other manufacturers that use it so sorry but you will have to buy it from the main dealer.

On 2001 e320 a rattling noise is coming from converter can tighten it up

More likely you have picked up some road gravel or a rock large enough to rattle. Visually inspect the Catalytic Converter to see if there is a rock bouncing around in it. If not then a replacement would be necessary since there would be nothing to tighten up.

This can be a sound made by "cam phaser" engines that Ford made for 4 or 5 years. Usually the noise quits above 2000 rpm as the phasers limit out in their travel. These engines are very sensitive to the correct weight oil being used and a Ford filter being installed.

The noise has been described as a muffled diesel rattle. Owners report stalling, hesitation, poor acceleration, but most do experience vibrations. What is happening is each bank of cylinders is suppose to be synchronized by the phasers. Imagine if half of the valves are firing several degrees earlier or later than the other half of the engine. Since these adjustments constantly change it makes trouble shooting difficult.

Other areas for rattles are the beads in the catalytic converters which may loosen and float inside the converter or even loose baffles in honeycomb design converters.

I have had terrible noises coming from gravel and rocks trapped in between the heat shields of catalytic converters especially if you travel gravel roads. Since you have "knock sensors" you can get driveability problems from the engine trying to misinterpete the knocks and rattles caused by rocks.

2003 Kia Spectra odd rattle in shifter

You are most likely hearing metal on metal on the brake pads. The brakes are not attached to the gear shift in any way. Unless those Koreans have done some really wierd design.

You didn't say which model or engine.
Check for loose heat shields, broken engine or transmission mounts.

My MINI '03 is screwed up

have you checked transmission oil?
I am not familar with MINI's but it sounds like either your transmission oil is low or is too thick (cold weather could do that) that the computer is safe gaurding you for destroying your transmission or you computers messed up.

Recommendation: get the car to a shop ASAP before you do serious damage.
