The ECT is mounted usually in the intake manifold or in the coolant stream and sends the engine temperature information to the ECM/PCM. The sensor is a thermistor which changes internal resistance as temperature changes.

The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor, sometimes referred to as the Coolant Temperature Sensor (CTS), is a thermistor (resistor which changes value based on temperature) mounted in the engine coolant stream. Low coolant temperatures produce a high resistance-100,000 ohms at 40°F (22°C), while high temperatures cause low resistance-70 ohms at 266°F (130°C).

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
Be careful when handling the ECT sensor. Damage to the sensor can affect proper operation of the fuel injection system.

  1. Properly relieve cooling system pressure.
  2. Make sure ignition is in the OFF position.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4. For the 1995 3.1L engine, remove the air intake duct.
  5. Detach the ECT sensor electrical connector.
  6. Carefully back out the sensor.

To install:

  1. Coat the threads of the sensor with sealer 9985253 or equivalent.
  2. Install sensor into engine, then tighten it to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) for all vehicles except the 1993 3.3L and the 3.1L engines. For the 1993 3.3L engine, tighten the sensor to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm). Tighten the sensor to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm) on the 3.1L engine. Do NOT strip the threads.
  3. Attach the sensor electrical connector.
  4. If removed, install the air intake duct.
  5. Check coolant level and refill if necessary.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable.

Sit on or by the thermostat housing, disconnect harness, unscrew sensor, install new one, and your done.

check coolant level. have a compression test done to check for head gasket or cracks. If you have a viscous fan hub then replace it and check fan operation if an electric fan . Run fault codes to check for sensor faults.

1998 nissan maxima runs hot, replaced the thermostat and at times gauge still register hot, what else could cause this?


Its possible that your problem also stay in the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor resistance changes in response to engine coolant temperature.

Keep in mindthat the sensor resistance decreases as coolant temperature increases. This provides a reference signal, which indicates engine coolant temperature, to the ECM.

My cadillac deville(2001)runs smooth,but it runs hot.what is the problem?


Insufficient or weak coolant, bad thermostat (out of range), cooling fan not running or kicking into 2nd phase with A/C on, bad temperature sensor, bad temperature sending unit.(false guage reading).
Start by checking your coolant level and color (nice and green or orange? not rusty looking?) if rusty looking, flush coolant system and refill with recommended coolant type of 50/50 mixture.

Check specific gravity of coolant to see if the mixture is weak.

Verify cooling fan is kicking on after engine reaches operating temperature with engine idling.

Replace thermostat.

Measure resistance of temperature sensor. (should slowly raise as engine heats up)

Measure voltage at sending unit. (should slowly raise as engine heats up)

One of those should solve it, I always lean toward weak coolant and bad thermostat. I have seen bad water pumps do that too.

Temperature gauge don't work..


Sounds like you may have a problem with your coolant temperature sending unit or thermostat, locate your sending unit, unplug the electrical connector run a jumper wire across the 2 wires inside the connector the gauge should read hot when the jumper wires are connected and when you remove the jumper wire it should go back to cold this verifies your gauge and all related wiring are working properly, if it doesnt work as described you either have a wiring problem or a bad temp gauge, next if your heater output is suffering you more then likely have a weak thermostat staying open or partially open replace the thermostat with a new unit, however if you arent experiencing any heater trouble replace your coolant temperature sending unit because your thermostat is more then likely working properly.....

The water temperature indicator sender unit is installed on the engine into an engine coolant passage. The water temperature indicator sender unit reacts to the engine coolant temperature. Its resistance decreases as the engine coolant temperature increases.

How to install a coolant temp sensor in a 1995 ford escort engine 1.9 liter


REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 1.8L and 1.9L Engines CAUTION
Never open, service or drain the radiator or cooling system when hot; serious burns can occur from the steam and hot coolant. Also, when draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantities. Always drain coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or is several years old.
  1. Locate the coolant temperature sending unit on the engine.
  2. Disconnect the sending unit electrical harness.
  3. Drain the engine coolant below the level of the switch.
  4. Unfasten and remove the sending unit from the engine.
  5. If the same sender is to be replaced, remove and discard the O-ring. To install:
  6. If reusing the old sender, install a new O-ring.
  7. Coat the new sending unit with Teflontape or electrically conductive sealer.
  8. Install the sending unit and tighten to 18–22 ft. lbs. (25–29 Nm).
  9. Attach the sending unit's electrical connector.
  10. Fill the engine with coolant.
  11. Start the engine, allow it to reach operating temperature and check for leaks.
  12. Check for proper sending unit operation.
2.0L SOHC Engines
  1. Disonnect the negative battery cable.
  2. If equipped, raise the car and remove the left-hand splash shield bolts.
  3. Loosen the petcock and partially drain the radiator.
  4. Lower the car, locate the sender and unplug its electrical connection.

    To install:
  6. Install the sender and tighten it to 13–17 ft. lbs. (17–24 Nm).
  7. Attach the sender electrical connection.
  8. If equipped, raise the car and install the left-hand splash shield bolts.
  9. Lower the car and fill the cooling system.
  10. Connect the negative battery cable.
2.0L DOHC Engines
  1. Disonnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Loosen the petcock and partially drain the radiator.
  3. Locate the sender and unplug its electrical connection.
  4. Unscrew the sender counterclockwise and remove it from the engine. Fig. 2: On 2.0L DOHC (VIN 3) engines, tighten the coolant temperature sender to 89–124 inch lbs. (10–14 Nm) 90982g27.gif
    To install:
  5. Install the sender and tighten it clockwise to 89–124 inch lbs. (10–14 Nm).
  6. Attach the sender electrical connection and fill the cooling system.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.

To test it:

Perform this test on a cold or cool engine.
  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  2. Unplug the electrical wiring from the sending unit.
  3. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the terminal and the sending unit's metal body
    1. Infinite resistance or zero resistance: the sending unit is bad, replace the sender with a new one.
    2. Other than infinite or zero resistance: continue test.
  4. Remove the temperature sender from the engine.
  5. Position the sending unit so the metal shaft (opposite end from the electrical connectors) is in a pot of water. Make sure that the electrical connector is not submerged and only the tip of the sending unit's body is in the water.
  6. Heat the pot of water at a medium rate. While the water is warming, continue to measure the resistance of the terminal and the metal body of the sending unit:
    1. As the water warms up, the resistance goes down in a steady manner: the sending unit is good.
    2. As the water warms up, the resistance does not change or changes in erratic jumps: the sender is bad, replace it with a new one.
  7. Install the good or new sending unit into the engine, then connect the negative battery cable.
  1. With the engine cold, remove the ECT sensor.
  2. Immerse the tip of the sensor in container of water.
  3. Connect a digital ohmmeter to the two terminals of the sensor.
  4. Using a calibrated thermometer, compare the resistance of the sensor to the temperature of the water. Refer to the sensor resistance illustration.
  5. Repeat the test at two other temperature points, heating or cooling the water as necessary.
  6. If the sensor does not meet specification, it must be replaced.

Where are the coolant sending units


ON THE LEFT CYLINDER HEAD BELOW THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING.IF YOU REPLACED THE COOLANT SENDING UNIT.STILL THE OVER HEAT LIGHT COMES ON YOU HAVE A SHORT IN GAUGE OR WIRE.

If you changed the coolant temperature sensor and it had a 5 volt ref signal to it then you replaced the wrong part. You need to replace the coolant temperature sending unit.  The coolant temp "sensor" is an input to the ECM for your fuel injection system. The coolant temp "sending unit" is for coolant temp reading at the gauge, It is an NTC switch (negative temperature coefficient) which means as temp increases/resistance decreases.
