Question about 2003 Toyota Matrix

2 Answers

My 2003 Matrix air bag light came on this morning. I've read some of the comments about this and heard it's very expensive. Does the light mean it won't work if I get in an accident or will it deploy on it's own while I am driving?

The light is probably on because there is a break in the wiring that goes through the steering column into the steering wheel. The device that contains this harness is called the "clockspring assembly". The air bags will not deploy if the warning light is on, and is not an indication that they will deploy at random. The clockspring assembly should not be outrageously expensive. I would phone a couple dealers and get a quote. You can do this yourself but it is probably better handled by someone with experience in airbags.

Hello, welcome to FIxYa. Please allow me to assist you.

First, we need to know why the air bag light is on. This can be from a variety of reasons. Some are expensive, some are not. I would first suggest taking the car to a place that can read the air-bag computer, and get the code or codes that are stored determined. The codes are what turns on the light, and leads us through the diagnosis. Without the codes, it is rather difficult to address the cost issues that would be involved.

To answer the second part of your question...the air bag may not deploy in the event of an accident if the light is illuminated on the dash.

Finally, no, the bag will not deploy whilst driving.

Please get the codes read, and get back to us, so that we may be better able to assist you.

Thanks for choosing FixYa for assistance today.

Why Would srs light stay on in a mitsubishi Eclipse 2003 model!

SRS means secondary restraint system - air bags. If the light remains on, it means the the air bag module has detected a problem with your air bag system. Have codes read (you'll need a reader that can read codes from the air bag module) to see what the problem is, and have it repaired. Best left to a dealer or shop that has experience with air bag systems.

I sent a question to FixYa regarding my 2003 Jeep Cherokee and why the air bag light goes on and off on the dash. My credit card has been charged the $24.50 cost to pay for the techs imput on this problem....

The clockspring contact under the steering wheel is most likely defective, best thing is to hook up a scanner that reads your air bag system, these parts are expensive, so have it scanned you will save money, I can't help with the loss of your money but I can give you good advice

SERVICE AIR BAG LITE

Hi,

When the air bag light comes on, this means there is a problem in the restrain system. Unfortunately, there are several sensors/parts that are monitored in the air bag system from an air bag sensor, to a problem in the seat belts and there is no way of knowing "where" the fault lies until you get the "codes" read. You will need to find a shop that has a scan-tool that can read air bag codes, as most local "free" scans or "personal" scanners do not read air bag codes. Most shops charge anywhere from $40 - $65 for this service, but, like I say, it is the only way to know "for sure' where the problem lies, and where to start your diagnostic and repair process.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Every morning my front right side is all the way down and does not go up until I drive it for a few miles. I had heard maybe its my O rings. This is for a 2003 lincoln navigator

It could be leaking o-rings, a leaking air line, or even a dry rotted air bag. You can check these yourself by filling a spray bottle with soapy water and spraying the air lines, connections, and the air bag while it's inflated and watching for bubbles. I hope this helps and good luck!

2001 Sonata Air bag light has been on for months. Does that mean the bag won't inflate and where might the problem be?

Could be several causes... but the result is consistent - when the light is on the air bag is disabled

The motion sensor board has a failure - or one of the crash sensors has failed - so the motions sensor board is not receiving the desired signal. To prevent an accidential firing of the bag, the system disables the airbag and turns on the light....

Clock and Shifter Lights Not Working 2005 Toyota Matrix

I took my 05 matrix in to the dealership today because my srs airbag light had been coming on and off for the past month. After the dealership tried charging me $90.00 to diagnose the airbag problem(which i refused to pay and won) they gave me obd code B1660. I googled this code and came up with a website matrixowners.com(this site for some reason doesn't open) but on the preview it does show. "They found code B1660 CK SYSTEM and found a bad passenger air bag indicator which is part of the clock assembly. They want 3 bills plus labor for the clock. ..." my only conclusion is that I just figured out why my clock has been coming in and out for the past year or so. I suggest if you have this clock problem you should check your air bag system and don't pay the fee to diagnose the air bag system. Your car should not have a malfunction if the air bag system if it has never been involved in an accident or modified. It is a safety issue and the air bag system should have a lifetime warranty.
