youre going to torque it to 65 ft lbs.. start from the centre out and go diagonally. be sure to replace the head bolts and very lightly oil them before installation.

The thing is your doing the timing belt the water pump is right their with it . it should cost you much more at all besides the cost of the water pump. When doing a timing belt I have a rule that I go by The timing belt/seals =cam , crank , any pulley & tensioner & water pump all get replaced at the same time. I did a t-belt on a Audi A-8 very complex whole front of car has to come off as well, he didnt want to do w-pump & thermostat his thermostat was their as well not even a month later the water pump gave out he had to pay double the price because he didnt want to do it when I had it apart the first time. And make sure mechanic is ase certified . good luck

Align marks on timing belt pulley and pump body.

Camshaft pulley alignment marks

  1. Align marks on camshaft pulleys with alignment marks on seal plate.
  2. Install timing belt. NOTE: No looseness should exist on the tension side and at the camshaft pulleys.
  3. Loosen tensioner lock bolt.
  4. Turn crankshaft 2 revolutions in direction of rotation and check that timing marks are still in alignment.
  5. Tighten timing belt tension lock bolt to 27-38 ft lb (32-52 Nm).
  6. Apply a force of 22 lbs to timing belt between camshaft sprockets.
  7. Belt deflection should measure 0.30-0.33 in (7.5-8.5 mm)
  8. NOTE: Replace tensioner spring if timing belt deflection is excessive.
Timing Belt Installation

  1. Install lower timing belt cover.
  2. Install upper timing belt cover.
  3. Install power steering drive belt and adjust belt tension.
  4. Install fan pulley.
  5. Install generator drive belt and adjust belt tension.
  6. Install A/C drive belt and adjust belt tension.
  7. Install splash guard.
  8. Install fan and fan shroud.
  9. Install 4 fan bolts. Tighten to 24 ft lb (33 Nm).
  10. Install fan shroud mounting bolts.
  11. Install fresh air duct.
  12. Connect hose to resonance chamber.
  13. Connect battery negative cable.

  1. Verify that the sprocket timing marks are still aligned and that the groove and the keyway on the crankshaft timing sprocket align with the mark on the oil pump. The white pointers on the camshaft timing sprockets should align with the dots on the front plate.
  2. Install the timing belt. Use clips to secure the belt onto each sprocket until the installation is complete. Align the dotted marks on the timing belt with the timing mark opposite the groove on the crankshaft sprocket. NOTE The arrows on the timing belt must follow the belt's direction of rotation. The manufacturer's trademark on the belt's spine should be readable left-to-right when the belt is installed.
  3. Align the white line on the timing belt with the alignment mark on the right bank camshaft timing pulley. Secure the belt with a clip. WARNING If any binding is felt when adjusting the timing belt tension by turning the crankshaft, STOP turning the engine, because the pistons may be hitting the valves.
  4. Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise to remove the slack between the crankshaft sprocket and the right camshaft timing belt sprocket.
  5. Install the belt around the water pump pulley.
  6. Install the belt on the idler pulley.
  7. Align the white alignment mark on the timing belt with the alignment mark on the left bank camshaft timing belt sprocket.
  8. Install the crankshaft pulley and tighten the center bolt by hand. Rotate the crankshaft pulley clockwise to give slack between the crankshaft timing belt pulley and the right bank camshaft timing belt pulley.
  9. Insert a 1.4mm piece of wire through the hole in the pusher to hold the rod in. Install the pusher assembly while pushing the tension pulley toward the belt.
  10. Pull the pin out from the pusher to release the rod.
  11. Remove the clamps from the sprockets. Rotate the crankshaft pulley clockwise 2 turns. Measure the rod protrusion to ensure it is between 0.16-0.24 in. (4-6mm).
  12. If the tensioner pulley bracket pivot bolt was removed, tighten it to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm).
  13. Tighten the pusher bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
  14. Remove the crankshaft pulley. Install the lower and upper timing belt covers and tighten their bolts to 12 ft. lbs. (17 Nm).
  15. Fit the oil cooler hose onto the timing cover and tighten its mounting bracket bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  16. Install the crankshaft pulley and tighten the pulley bolt to 123 ft. lbs. (167 Nm).
  17. Install fan pulley assembly and tighten the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  18. Install and adjust the accessory drive belts.
  19. Install the cooling fan assembly and tighten the bolts to 72 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  20. Install the upper fan shroud.
  21. Install the air cleaner assembly and intake air duct.
  22. Connect the negative battery cable

What is the torque spec for the head bolts on a 2001 optima with the 2.4L?

I really have no clue, but, you really should have a manual for this vehicle. You can get one here:
(one note, I don't work for this company, but I have been a mecahnic anyone that tears in to an engine without the manual for that vehicle is looking for failure...)

I had my head redone on my 2001 kia rio when i got it back the top cam pulleys were off do they go on a certain way

You can research the procedure online or get a repair book for replacing the timing belt which you should have already.
You would also need the torque specs for the head bolts.
There is a mark on each cam gear you have to line up when putting the belt on.

get a gates brand belt it will have the markings on it making it a lot easier to install. as for the marks once you have cylinder 1 at TDC remove the covers and you will see the marks on the sprockets aligning with the marks on the head and the block.good luck

Timing marks setting Hyundai Lantra

Ensure timing marks aligned [6] & [7] . 1. Fit timing belt in anti-clockwise direction, starting at crankshaft sprocket. Ensure belt is taut between sprockets. 2. Slacken tensioner pulley bolt [8] . Push tensioner pulley firmly against timing belt to tension belt. 3. Tighten tensioner pulley bolt [8] . Tightening torque: 43-55 Nm. 4. Except Matrix: Turn crankshaft one turn clockwise. 5. Matrix: Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise. 6. Ensure timing marks aligned [6] . 7. Apply a load of 2 kg to belt at . Belt should deflect 4-6 mm. If not: Adjust position of tensioner pulley. 8. Install components in reverse order of removal. 9. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt [2] . Tightening torque: 170-180 Nm

The Timing belt

Timing Belt: Service and Repair
1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Loosen power steering lock bolts and nuts accordingly and remove tension from Power Steering (P/S) and/or Air Conditioning (A/C) compressor
drive belt.
3. Remove P/S and/or A/C drive belt.
4. Loosen generator mounting bolts and adjusting bolt.
5. Remove generator bolts.
6. Remove water pump pulley.
7. Remove crankshaft pulley and timing belt guide plate.
8. Remove upper and lower timing belt covers.
9. Turn crankshaft so that timing mark on timing belt pulley is aligned with timing mark on engine.
10. Check that "I" mark on intake camshaft pulley is aligned with mark on cylinder head cover and "E" mark on exhaust camshaft pulley is aligned
with mark on cylinder head cover.
NOTE: Do not move camshaft or crankshaft once timing marks have been correctly positioned.
11. Loosen tensioner pulley lock bolt.
12. Protect timing belt with a rag.
13. Remove tensioner pulley.
14. Remove timing belt.
NOTE: Mark the direction of timing belt rotation (on the timing belt) for proper reinstallation.
NOTE: Never forcefully twist, turn inside out or bend timing belt. Do not allow oil or grease to come in contact with timing belt.
1. Replace timing belt if it is contaminated with oil or grease.
2. Check timing belt for uneven wear, fraying, peeling, cracking and hardening. Replace timing belt as necessary.
3. Bend timing belt into a "U" shape as shown in figure. Distance "A" must be at least 1.0 inch (25 mm).
4. Inspect both idler pulley and tensioner pulley for uneven wear and smooth bearing operation.
5. Inspect camshaft pulleys and timing belt pulley for broken teeth or damage.
NOTE: Replace any component that shows damage, excessive wear, or that appears prone to a possible failure.
1. Install tensioner pulley.
NOTE: Replace tensioner spring whenever timing belt is replaced.
2. Pull tensioner pulley to its furthest point and tighten lock bolt.
3. Check that timing mark on timing belt pulley is aligned with timing mark on engine.
4. Check that "I" mark on intake camshaft pulley is aligned with mark on cylinder head cover and "E" mark on exhaust camshaft pulley is aligned
with mark on cylinder head cover.
NOTE: If existing timing belt is being reused, install belt in proper rotation direction marked prior to removal.
5. Install timing belt onto timing belt pulley first, then idler pulley, exhaust camshaft pulley, intake camshaft pulley, and tensioner pulley in that
6. Check that there is no looseness in belt between idler pulley and exhaust camshaft pulley or between intake and exhaust camshaft pulleys.
7. Loosen tensioner pulley lock bolt and allow tensioner spring to apply tension to timing belt.
NOTE: Do not add additional tension.

8. Tighten tensioner pulley lock bolt to specified torque.
Tightening torque: 28 - 38 ft. lbs. (38 - 51 Nm, 3.9 - 5.2 kg-m)
9. Rotate crankshaft two full revolutions (clockwise only) and align timing mark on timing belt pulley with timing mark on engine block.
10. Check that "I" mark on intake camshaft pulley and "E" mark on exhaust camshaft pulley are aligned with marks on cylinder head cover.
11. If they are not aligned, remove timing belt and start process from tensioner installation.
12. Measure timing belt deflection by applying moderate pressure midway between camshaft pulleys. If deflection is not correct, repeat from
tensioner installation.
Deflection pressure: 22 lb. (98 N, 10 kg)
Deflection: 0.39 - 0.50 inch (11 - 13 mm)
13. Install lower and upper timing belt covers in that order.
Tightening torque: 5.8 - 8.0 ft. lbs. (7.9 - 10.7 Nm, 0.8 - 1.1 kg-m)
14. Install timing belt guide plate and crankshaft pulley.
Tightening torque: 9.0 - 12.6 ft. lbs. (12.3 - 17.2 Nm, 1.3 - 1.8 kg-m)
15. Install water pump pulley.
Tightening torque: 9.0 - 12.6 ft. lbs. (12.3 - 17.2 Nm, 1.3 - 1.8 kg-m)
16. install generator belt and adjust the tension.
17. Install P/S and/or A/C drive belt and adjust the tension.
18. Connect negative battery cable.

Timing belt position

crankshaft sprocket up on timing mark, the exaust timing on the shield behind the timing gear. it will be E on the exaust cam gear and the I in the intake cam gear. then install belt.
