The '01 C70 does have a tiny A/T dipstick, located under the large wiring bundle near the battery, under the radiator hose. It is very short, small and burried. Look very very carefully. I missed it until taking out the radiator hoses.
The transmission filter is under the car under the transmission fluid pan. you have to lift up your car loosen the volts, take of the pan, take of the filter put in the new one, put the new one on, put the transmission fluid pan in place, put the bolts and tighten them, lower the car and put however much transmission fluid your car takes. Access to the transmission dip stick is not easy. It is hidden deep under tube and wiring beneath the air intake tube near the battery, it has a yellow top labelled 'Trans' and has a clip that secures the top in place. Check the fluid level when the engine is running and the transmission is in 'park'. If low find some suitable hose to locate it into the dip stick tube and then fit a funnel in the end of this 'extension'. The fluid specified is AW5, Volvo part number 1161540-8, do not use anything else as some fluids do not mix well. Add fluid about a pint a time and check the level each time.
we might need to know if this is the car's 1st transmission and how many miles are on it --- but tansmissions that make noise and **** when put into gear are transmissions that are low on transmission fluid or have burnt (old) fluid - check your transmission fluid level using the transmission fluid dipstick (its location should be in the car's owners' manual).
If fluid looks dark (significantly darker than new fluid from the bottle), then drain &fill tranny.
If fluid is just low, fill tranny and monitor level for continued leakage.
A word of caution: keep on top of the tranny's fluid level - running on a dry transmission is a really good way to put a 94 Cutlass into the junkyard before its time.
You need to, at the minimum, change the fluid & trans filter. Easy proceedure. With van jacked up & blocked so it won't fall, use a large collection tray under trans pan & remove pan bolts. let oil drain into tray. use screwdriver to pry pan off. clean pan thoroughly & trans matting surface. Remove filter. You may need to adjust low rev band. Check with dealer or parts store for proper clearances. Put new filter on & tighten bolt[s]. Use new gasket & rebolt pan. Use gasket sealer on pan side only. You'll need 4-8 qts. of the proper tranny oil. Fill through trans. filler hole. Start engine & let warm up, check level & don't overfill or you'll have to suction out until level.
first you need to buy transmission fluid new filter and new gasket.you need 11.4 pints of transmision fluid.raise front of vechicle.set parking brake.block both back wheels.besure support vechicle weight with jack stands. get a drain pan.if your transmission pan dont have a drain plug.loosen rear pan bolts a few turns.remove the front and side transmission pan bolts. let fluid drain.remove tranny pan. then clean old gasket material from transmission and pan carefully.dont scratch or damage surface.clean old tranny bolts using brake cleaner or buy new tranny bolts.you have to put a tiny film of rtv silicone on tranny bolts so they wont leak.carefully remove old tranny filter and put on new filter.clean all grease grim away from tranny pan it should be **** and span because.you might need a little gasket adhesive to hold gasket in place while putting pan back on transmission.to line up bolt holes.loosely put all bolts in you have to move pan a little to get holes line up.when all is finish put tranny fluid back in.besure you put 11.4 pints back in that about 6.5 quarts. make sure tranny fluid level is right before driving vechicle.l
i presume that is a front wheel drive. look beside the motor at the transaxale (transmission) for a dipstick... the fluid is added into the same hole the dipstick goes... you'll need a funnel..... incidentally atf type transmission fluid is for fords .... might want to check your owners manual for the correct type you should use.
