I'm having a cooling system problem I clean out the front of the radiator replaced the termosat and coolant. Also bleed the system an she's still overheating

It could be several things. check your clutch fan and make sure it spins freely, also check water pump by checking coolant movement. the other thing that can cause overheating is a bad head gasket.

Will an air pocket in the coolant system cause it to overheat or over pressurize on a 2001 Nissan Sentra ?


1. The radiator cap if working correctly it will release pressure in the system provided the cap you have is the correct pressure setting. If you are having a problem with pressure then replace the cap with a new radiator cap with the correct pressure setting. Do not use a cap with a pressure setting other than the original equipment pressure spec. So you do not go to the parts store and buy any radiator cap on the shelf that fits because they come with different pressure ratings and some of these will be totally unsuitable for your car.

2. If the pressure valve is stuck in the "old" cap the pressure release system will not work.

3. Overheating
Air pockets in the cooling system can definitely cause overheating and can retard coolant flow through the system. If you are draining the radiator to replace the coolant or replacing the radiator you need to follow the correct procedures for bleeding air out of the system for that particular engine after coolant refilling. Some engines have bleeder screws on the cooling system to assist in the air bleeding procedure and some don't.

There are various causes for overheating so don't assume it will necessarily be solved by bleeding any remaining air from the cooling system and replacing the radiator cap with one that works.

Other causes can be...........
1. Faulty cooling system thermostat. (Replace the Thermostat)
2. Faulty water pump, especially if the impellers have corroded away or have disintegrated in the case of those design genius water pumps with plastic impellers. (Replace the water pump)

3. Cooling fans not working and if so the cause needs to be tracked. Check that your fans are kicking in. If the engine is overheating the fans should be running because they will switch on when the coolant reaches a specific temp and well before the coolant gets excessively hot.

4. A partial blockage in the coolant passages inside the engine but not in the radiator if you have a new one. If the coolant is not changed at the required intervals(frequently the case with many owners) or is over diluted with water you can get a build up of debris. If products like stop leak have been used in the system this can create similar problems with partial blockages inside the engine coolant passages.

5. A compression leak into the cooling system.
If you have bled air from the system and have continuous air bubbles in the cooling system I would suspect a compression leak. In that event a basic leak down test will show if you have compression gasses leaking into the cooling system and from which cylinder(s). The spark plug is removed and compressed air is forced into the cylinder via the spark plug fitting and air bubbles will show up in the coolant of there is a leak into the cooling system.

How to bleed cooling system


to bleed the cooling system on a vs supercharged statesman .

Makes sure you have coolant in the radiator and over flow botthe.

turn the heater to the on position and on high.

make sure you have plenty more coolant close by.

with the radiator cap off and the engine idling .

now top coolant up and place radiator cap on.

increase idle revs so the system pressurises.

now the system is warm and pressure .

you can open the bleeder 1 by 1 starting at the highest point.

1st couple of times you open the system you will get a lot of air ,you can stop bleeding this nipple once there is a good stream of coolant flowing.

do the same with other nipples as there is 3 bleeders in total.

Once all air is out do not open radiator cap again top coolant up in overflow bottle only.

double check coolant level again when its cold ..

  1. Radiator Removal
    • 1 Open the radiator drain plug, located somewhere near the lowest point of the radiator, and let the coolant flow into a catch basin to drain it. Loosen the lower radiator hose to drain the coolant if your radiator does not have a drain plug.
    • 2 Detach the hoses from the radiator. Loosen the nose clamps and pull the hoses off of their attachment necks. Remove the auxiliary belts by sliding them off of their pulleys to gain more work room.


    • 3 Remove the engine cooling fan and the radiator shroud. This step is vehicle-specific, and no single process will cover all types of engines. In most cases, you have to use a wide box wrench to release the mounting bolt that holds the fan to the engine. Set your cooling fan down upright to protect its clutch. Loosen the mounting hardware that holds the shroud. You might have to pull the fan and the shroud out together if clearance does not permit you to pull them out separately.
    • 4 Remove any mounting screws, bolts, clips or other remaining attachment points. Put these pieces of hardware into a container so that you do not lose them.
    • 5 Lift the radiator clear of the engine. This can result in a mess of coolant as the radiator shifts around, so have newspaper and a catch basin underneath the radiator.
    Radiator Replacement
    • 6 Slide the replacement radiator into place. Handle it gently so you do not damage the delicate cooling fins or hose necks.
    • 7 Replace the mounting hardware. Torque them so you do not break the new radiator.
    • 8 Reinstall the cooling fan and the shroud by simply reversing the fan and shroud removal process.
    • 9 Reattach the cooling hoses to their mounting necks. Snug the hose clamps down, being careful not to over tighten. Consider replacing your cooling hoses at this time, as they become brittle and prone to failure with age. Replace them all if you replace one.
    • 10 Install and tension the auxiliary belts if you removed them to get more room to work. Slide them back over their pulleys and adjust tension by turning the tension adjustment nuts and bolts.
    Cooling Addition
    • 11 Mix the replacement coolant and distilled water in the right proportions for your vehicle and your climate.
    • 12 Pour the coolant into the proper fill area. Depending on your vehicle, you may pour the coolant directly into your replacement radiator, into your overflow reservoir or somewhere else.
    • 13 Run the engine to allow the coolant to circulate and add more as necessary.
    • 14 Bleed the air from the system. There will be a bleed valve somewhere in the system, although its location will vary from vehicle to vehicle. Open the valve with a wrench and watch for bubbles. You know your radiator replacement is done when no more air bubbles bleed from the system and your coolant is fully up to temperature.

Engine overheating i have replaced the radiator has plenty of water


replace thermostat.then bleed coolant system, this is how you do it.fill the cooling coolant system with 50 / 50 dexcool and water to raise boiling point,straight water will evaporate boil away cause engine to overheat catch fire thats why you need 50 / 50 mixture antifreeze and water.to bleed coolant system first fill coolant system until coolant stay at the full cold mark on the the coolant overflow jug,then you start engine allow it to idle,place the heater and ac control in any ac setting except max and the temperature control to the highest setting,run engine until lower hose to water pump is hot. with the engine hot run the engine speed up to 3000 rpm and allow it return to idle, repeat this 5 times. slowly open the bleed valve on the thermostat housing or look for bleed valve at the water pump heater hose.open bleed valve for 15 seconds to expel any trapped air.then top off the coolant as necessary,and when top radiator hose hot thermostat open up.keep adding cooling to overflow until coolant level stop at full cold mark dont over fill coolant.if engine seem like overheating while looking at cooling gauge turn off engine wait a while until cool off add more coolant until coolant level stay stable and dont drop any.when open radiator overflow cap use large rag over the radiator cap to keep from getting scald open radiator cap a little at a time but dont open radiator cap until engine cool down first.replace the radiator overflow cap, thermostat,and engine coolant temperature sensor and check the cooling fans fuses and relays see what happens.

How to bleed the coolant system on a 1992 cutlass supreme


Normally, you shouldn't have to bleed the cooling system but, there are two bleed valves. One is just above the water pump, and the other is on the thermostat housing. They are really small, and due to the age of your car, they will be brittle and almost impossible to open without breaking them.
You don't want to break them. If you are hearing air circulating thru the cooling system, try this and let me know how you make out.....

Physically look in the radiator under the cap when cool, for coolant level, and check the valve in the cap for sticking. If air is present in the radiator it can't get out, and more coolant can't get in,(from the overflow). Either clean the cap or replace it and check that it is the CORRECT cap.

If radiator is low on coolant fill it to overflowing, replace cap, and check that coolant overflow is filled to the COLD line or mark. The overflow is normally where you would add coolant. After refilling as outlined above, check the level every morning for 2 or 3 days until coolant level stops dropping below the cold mark and add coolant to the overflow ONLY. Do not open the radiator cap.

For more OVERHEATING PROBLEMS try these...
Radiator fins dirty, clean with a strong stream of water, not high pressure water.
Radiator clogged, try backflushing it, or replace.
Thermostat stuck open or shut, replace it.
Water pump worn out, can no longer move enough coolant, replace it.
Fan shroud broken or missing....
Electric Fan(s) not working, Check the fan, relay, fuse and engine temperature sensor's.
Belt driven fan, belt slipping, fan clutch is bad, fan blades have flattened out.

How to Fill Coolant

If the coolant system has been flushed, first add 100 percent ethylene glycol in

the amount listed for the appropriate engine application. Then slowly add clean

water to the system until the level of the coolant mixture has reached the base-of

the radiator neck. Wait for two minutes and recheck the level of the coolant

mixture. add clean water if necessary to restore the coolant mixture level to the

base of the radiator neck

When refilling the engine cooling system, add three engine coolant supplement

sealant pellets, GM RN 3634621 or equivalent, and GM approved new Ethylene

Glycol Coolant DEX-COOL GM RN 9985809.

If the cooling system is being refilled ONLY (no flush), a 50 percent ethylene

glycol and 50 percent clean water mixture should be used to fill the system. Fill

the system until the level of the 50150 mixture has reached the base of the radiator

neck. Wait two minutes and recheck the level of the coolant mixture. add a 50/50

ethylene glycol water mixture as necessary to restore the coolant mixture level to

the base of the radiator neck.

Install the radiator cap making certain the arrows line up with the overflow tube.

Close all air bleeds. DO NOT over torque the air bleed valve. The air bleed valve is

made out of brass.

Fill the coolant reservoir with a 50 percent ethylene glycol and a 50 percent clean

water coolant mixture. The proper amount of this mixture to be installed into the

coolant reservoir is listed below:

Add 0.65 liters (0.68 quarts) of a 5010 mixture of ethylene glycol and clean water

to the coolant recovery reservoir.

CAUTION: The low coolant indicator lamp may come on after this procedure. After

operating the vehicle so that the engine heats up and cools down three times. if at

any time the "TEMP' warning indicator comes on. Immediate action is required.

Were is the termosat loctated


In the housing at the end of the upper radiator hose.

  1. Drain the cooling system and tighten the drain plug.
  2. Disconnect radiator hose from thermostat cap (thermostat housing).
  3. Remove thermostat cap.
  4. Remove thermostat.
To install:
  1. When installing the thermostat, be sure to position it so that air bleed valve comes uppermost and into the recession of thermostat case.
  2. Install thermostat cap. When installing cap, align arrow marks on cap and case.
  3. Connect radiator hose to thermostat cap.
  4. Fill cooling system.
  5. After installation, check each part for leakage.

Drain cooling system


Make sure the engine is cold before you drain the cooling system. First remove the radiator cap. Under the hood on the bottom of the radiator you will find a drain plug. You turn it counter clockwise and drain the coolant into a container. After it has been drained add new coolant using the half and half (half coolant half clean water.) After having added the coolant. Be sure to add the kind of coolant that ,("goes with any color".) Replace the radiator cap.Run the engine to operating temerature then be sure to bleed the cooling system. They have a bleed screw near the thermostat housing . (That's where the hose from the radiator connects to.) Make sure all the air comes out from the bleed valve screw until coolant starts coming out. Tighten the screw and let the engine get cool again. check that there is coolant in the container where it says coolant only near the radiator.

Draining and Filling Cooling System

Draining Procedure

Important: Do NOT add any engine coolant supplement sealant pellets to the cooling system. Drain and refill the engine cooling system every 5 years or 240,000 km, (150,000 mi) , whichever occurs first.

  1. Park the vehicle on a level surface.
  2. Remove and clean the coolant recovery reservoir.
Caution: Refer to Radiator Cap Removal Caution in Service Precautions.

  1. Remove the radiator cap when the engine is cool:
3.1. Slowly rotate the cap counterclockwise to the detention tab. Do not press down while rotating pressure cap. 3.2. Wait until any residual pressure, indicated by a hissing sound, is relieved. 3.3. After all hissing stops, press down on the radiator cap and rotate the cap counterclockwise in order to remove the cap.
Important: Recover and store used coolant in a used coolant holding tank and submit the used coolant for recycling on a regular basis. Do NOT pour used coolant down the drain. Ethylene glycol antifreeze is very toxic. Disposing of ethylene glycol into the sewer system or ground water is both illegal and ecologically unsound.

  1. Place a drain pan under the radiator drain valve in order to collect all of the used coolant.
  2. Open the radiator drain valve located at the bottom of the radiator tank. If only partial cooling system draining is required, drain enough coolant to perform the procedure.
  3. Open the air bleed valve on the thermostat housing 2 full turns
    1. Open the air bleed valve above coolant pump 2 full turns.
    2. Place a drain pan under the engine block drains in order to collect the used coolant.Important: Allow the coolant to drain completely.

      1. Remove both of the engine block drains.
        • The front left engine block drain is located between the starter motor and the engine oil filter.
        • The rear right engine block drain is located near the crankshaft position sensor.
      Filling Procedure
      Reinstall the engine block drains
    3. Close the radiator drain valve,
      1. Install the coolant recovery reservoir. Notice: When adding coolant, it is important that you use GM Goodwrench DEX-COOL or HAVOLINE DEX-COOL coolant. If Coolant other than DEX-COOL or HAVOLINE DEX-COOL is added to the system the engine coolant will require change sooner; at 50,000 km (30,000 mi) or 24 months.
      2. Slowly add a 50/50 mixture of GM Goodwrench DEX-COOL or HAVOLINE DEX-COOL and clean, drinkable water to the radiator until the coolant level is at the base of the radiator fill neck.
      3. Wait for 2 minutes and reinspect the level of the coolant in the radiator. If necessary, add coolant to the radiator until the coolant level is at the base of the radiator fill neck.
      4. Install the radiator cap.Ensure that the radiator cap arrow points toward the radiator overflow tubeImportant: The air bleed valves are brass. Do NOT over-tighten the air bleed valves.

        1. Close the air bleed valve above the coolant pump.
          1. Close the air bleed valve on the thermostat housing.
          2. Fill the coolant reservoir with a 50/50 mixture of GM Goodwrench DEX-COOL or HAVOLINE DEX-COOL and clean, drinkable water. Caution: Refer to Radiator Cap Removal Caution in Service Precautions. Important: If the coolant temperature indicator turns ON, turn the engine OFF immediately and allow the engine to cool. Do NOT remove the radiator cap.
          3. Start the engine and allow the engine cooling fan to cycle on and off 3 times. If the low coolant indicator does not turn OFF and the coolant level is above the Full Cold mark on the coolant recovery reservoir, refer to Engine Coolant Temperature Gage Inaccurate or Inoperative.
          4. Turn off the ignition.
          5. Allow the engine to cool.
          6. Ensure that the engine coolant concentration is sufficient.

Engine overheating


The best way to flush it would be to take off the bottom radiator hose and pump water through the fill nozzle after all the coolent is out you can then hook the hose back up and replace it with new coolant.
