Question about 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

1 Answer

Thieves broke in my car by ripping out the lock cylinder of the door handle. I thought about buying a new door handle with the lock cylinder but a mechanic told me that I've to go to VW to fix this problem because the locks need to be reprogrammed. Is this true?

How do i remove a door panel on a 2005 malibu the door will not open

I am going to do something I hate here. I am going to give you an answer that may not help but may be helpful if that makes any sense to you. Sorry for this but I know it can be difficult to impossible to remove the door panel without the door opening on most vehicles so you can either try taking out the fastening screws for the panel (as many as you can get at) and reach inside to pull the connecting rod for the handle to open the door and finish removing the panel (which can be extremely difficult - thank car thieves for that - things get made more difficult to prevent it from being easy for thieves) or you can call a tow truck and there is a chance that the driver could use his lock-out tools to open the door but you would require an experienced operator and even then it is not always possible. The problem may be that someone already used lock-out tools to try and get into your car and broke off the connecting rod, in which case you probably need to do it from the inside. Any garage that has a towing service has probably had this happen (training new towing operators - mistakes happen(sorry tow operators and garages)) and would be versed in getting the job done so if all else fails I would call one of them to get the door open - not to say any garage shouldn't be able to get it done but something like this is usually charged by the hour and experience does help. If you read this post to them they should know what you need.

Door handle broke

can you open from the inside, its the only way you going to get to sort this, failing that you may need to get a new door card and rip the one off the door at the top corner near to the lock latch and split the plastic and pull the door pin inside to open then take the door card off. sometimes you can do it with out braking the door card but would not say it will not brake. inside there is a plastic clip that the handle go's on then another bar to the lock. this is designed to snap if some one trys to open the door with force.failing that the handle part can snap where the bar fits to it. that you would need to change the handle.

Sounds like the door lock cylinder broke. You can easily remove it and actuate the lock with a flathead screwdriver.
While pulling the door handle, loosen the t20 screw just to the rear of the handle until the lock cylinder slides out. You can peek in there with a flashlight and see where to put the blade of the screwdriver.
You need to order a new lock cyl, and they take a while to get from the dealer.

The cable between the interior handle and the locking mechanism broke. Where do I buy this cable

Its rare that they broke and if you don/t mind my sugesting and auto wreckers. If you can find a pick-a-part, (that is where they let you go in and take it off yourself) Then it will save you a lot more money. The bad thing is unless you can find one with that dorr dented you may have to pay for the whole door.
But if you price the peice you need at the dealers where they will order you one after ripping you a new one in the back side you may find it better to buy the whole used door and take it out and the wrecking yard so you can leave the rest of the door there.

Thats the best I can offer you, I hope you will be kind with a thumbs up rating for trying, Thanks, Raz

The driver side door lock broke on my 98 jetta door want open

according to my partsman (who has had great advice for many years), you do not have to remove the door panel to replace the door handle which contains the cylinder lock. the handle is released with a screw which you can see when you open the door. you will need a starhead screwdriver or socket. A new handle costs around $40 at a parts store in my area. call around for a locksmith who will re-key your key to the new lock or use the key which comes with the new lock, your choice. i am in dealing with this also

Outside door handles

You need to remove the door panels to gain access to the 10 mm bolts that will release the handles. You will also need to release the lock cylinder rod and the handle control rod, behind the handles. Not a hard job at all.
