Question about 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis

When the car is heated from running or from 100 degree outside temps it does not want to start. Must wait for it to cool down

The starter motors are prone to overheating problems in summer weather, and if the car won't turn over, then it is probably due to a faulty starter.

Replace the starter in this case.

1997 Chevy Lumina 3.1 engine. The cooling fans aren't coming on tell the car heats up to over 250 degrees.


Did you check for applicable trouble codes? Anything? Some of the national brand auto stores will check codes for free.
Check the coolant temp sensor, if you haven't already? Some makes and models if you turn on the ac, the fan/s will run. If you unplug the coolant temp sensor, the fan may run.
I might want to use non--contact infrared temp gun just to double-check temp gage.
Have you ever checked thermostat or coolant flow through the radiator. I understand it only heats at idle.

Yes it is.........simply because heater cores are such a pain in the **** to change. Sounds like a good deal.....maybe try to jew them down $100 to cover labor cost! You never know! Good luck!

Hi John,
Your right with your diagnostics, you have a blend door problem. If your switching to cool air and it is still hot then you also have a heat exchange unit fault, this is the component that changes the water flow from hot to cool by shutting off. If it is not operating correctly this will give you constant hot air no matter where you temperature switch is positioned.
As for the warm air while the engine is cold, sounds like the blend door is still open to atmosphere tempreture and if it is hot outside will pull that hot air into the inside of the vehicle.
Have the heat exchange valve checked, and the only way the check blend door operation is to remove the wiring from the blend doors and have the circuit tested. If the circuit is ok then the blend doors will need to be replaced.

When outside temp is above 80 degrees, engine will not start after running for a while. maybe vapor lock? After engine cools, 15-20 minutes engine starts.


Check the Engine Coolant Temperature sensor. If it is faulty or disconnected, it will tell the engine computer that the engine is still fully cold even when it is actually warm. The computer will then schedule too much fuel for a warm start--flooding the engine. You wind up waiting for the excess fuel to evaporate and the engine to cool down some and "match" the faulty sensor before it will start.

Another possibility is a leaking fuel injector. Again, a warm engine with too much fuel dripping from an injector will flood.

The temp reading on the dash is a very big clue... Likely the thermostat (at the end of the large top radiator hose inside the metal housing) is stuck open. When that happens, the coolant in the engine never reaches full temp. Not only can that result in a low heat condition but it can also give you poor fuel mileage as the computer always thinks the engine is cold and therefore it adds extra fuel to keep it running.
Replace with a 195 degree(f) thermostat, run the engine (with the heater on full heat) to nearly normal temp, turn it off and wait about three minutes, then re-start and continue filling. Once full, add whatever is necessary to the recovery bottle and close it up and check for leaks.

Problem when only when it's hot outside


This is a symptom of a bad coil. The car will generally idle well, and performance will deteriorate when the car (and the coil pack)warms up.
