would alternator going bad blow 80 amp fuse ?

  • rachel stephens Jul 12, 2010

well if it shorted inside the case but i would look to see if a wire is shorting also since a short could also ruin the alternator try this;turn everything off disconnect the power cable and use a test light between the battery cable and the positive side of the battery to see if you have a draw if the light lights up  brightly then you have a short

Would using a 80 amp fuse instead of a 60 amp fuse in a 1993 Geo Metro cause problems with the starter?

It shouldn't be. The starter is going to pull as many amps as it needs. The fuse is to protect the wiring and keep the car from catching fire in case the starter fails and tried to pull more current than it should. That being said you need to change it back. 80 amps is 33% more current than what that circuit is designed to carry. Being that it's a 1993 you should probably be on your 3rd starter by now

2009 buick lacrosse charging system failure could this be a fuise

main fusebox inside the engine bay. one of the big or box style fuses will be it. usually 60 amp and above its likely to be an 80 amp fuse. if it is NOT blown then the alternator is either dead or has had a belt break. i would look at the alternator belt first.

My 94 montero keeps draining battery. the battery and alternator is good. i can drive it , but the battery gauge gets lower and it drains completly. the 4wheel drive indicator light starts flashing right...

You say the alternator is good, but it sounds like it is not charging the battery. Have you had the charging system tested on the truck ?
Could be the main fuse for the alternator. Its usually large, 80 or 100 amp in size.

1997. Rav4 no power to fuel pump or gauges

Sounds like the MAIN fuse has blown.
No power to anything.
60-80 amp clear plastic fuse under the hood.
Must remove the fuse box to replace it. Not fun.
Usually caused by the battery shorting to ground.

I have a 2003 pt cruiser i hooked the battery up wrong and now it wont start and the car says no fuse on the dash

Either you blown the main fuse which I believe is 80 amps or the Power Control Module is blown. I hope is the first fault. This Fuse you can find it in the fuse box and should be in the engine compartment.

I put my battery in wrong in my 95 avalon now nothing happens when I trun the key, whats wrong?

It all depends on how lucky you are today. Connecting the battery backwards can destroy some high-dollar stuff. If you are really lucky, you will only have a blown fuse (or fuses). Check both of your main fuse blocks on the left side of the engine compartment,
One of the boxes is called the "Fusible Link" box and the other is called the "Engine Compartment Junction Block" (J/B) (See picture below).
Your main circuits are protected by the 40 Amp and 80 Amp fusible links in the Fusible Link box and the 120 Amp Alternator Fuse in the Junction Block. You will most likely find one or more of these fuses/fusible links blown.

Something is draining the battery, what ever the fuse you replaced was running is the most likely the cause. Check the fuse, and see if it is blown again, or atleast check the system the fuse is connected to because something may be drawing constant power from the battery

Its hard to say since you didn't include the year and model of your Jeep also when and how long it takes the battery to drain but Im going to assume that its probably a newer model Jeep like a 95 or so. In the main fusebox under the hood there is a charging system fuse in it that is a rather large fuse about an inch long or so and around 80 to 100 amps. Check to see if that fuse has blown. This fuse would casue the battery to drain becasue even if the alternator is charging, the connection from the alternator to the battery is pretty much broken so the car is running off of only the charge in the battery. It would cause symtoms similar to the alternator not charging. Its an easy fix and probably cost less that $5.
