How do I open hood when cable or latch is broken

If the plastic hood release handle inside is broken, can you reach the steel cable, if so, use a pair of vice grips to grab the cable and pull. Sometimes it helps to have a helper standing at the end of the hood and pop the hood with palm of hand, in the area of under hood release mechanism, at the same time your pulling the cable.

If cable is broken, some makes and models, you can remove front grille and get at under hood release mechanism.

There is usually a primary hood release, inside vehicle, and a secondary release under the hood, you have to slide your hand under the hood to release, sometimes you have to press down on the hood a little to move release. Trying to shut the hood with secondary release engaged can be difficult, you don't have the distance and the weight of hood to swing down.

How can I open the hood of my car when the cable does not work without breaking the front grille?

it's not easy so ill give you my best ( cuz it happened to me ) try to find where cable goes to hood latch if you can use a coat hanger with a sharp bend in it like a hook and find where it connects to hood release in grill hook it and pull at some point you may have to crawl under it to find cable. next one is if you can see that hood release cable is still hooked up try to get it where you can grab it with VICE GRIPS and squeeze it as tight as possible and pull hard, if this dosent work do you know for sure your self that cable is broken in two places find where and use VICE GRIPS . hope some of this helps let me know thanks Woody.

Hood release will not work

While having someone pull release, trying banging with palm of hand on front of hood near latch, it may just release. If that fails, try getting a small pair of pliers or vice grips on cable behind lever you pull to open, and trying pulling cable more, that way. There should be a way to adjust /tighten cable once you get it open and look at latch where cable is attached. Lubricate mechanism as well once open.

Latch cable is broke to open the hood on my 1996 olds delta 88.how do i get the hood open?

you'll have to lay under the car and very carefully try to reach up to the latch. try grabbing the cable, there should be at least a piece of it there, with a pair of pliers or vise grips and pull it. it should pop open for you.

How to open a chevy s10 hood I have a broken the hood release

not easy. depending on where it is broken, if its broken at the handle, you can try a pair of vice grips on the cable where the handle would go on. if its broken further down, you can take a flashlight to the front grille and peek through to see where the cable goes into the latch. take a long screwdriver to try to pry the latch back just as the cable would pull it.

97 cavalier Can't open up my son's hood to check oil, etc... the hood release does not work

Cable might be broken, is there enough hood release cable exposed that you can get pliers or vice grips to grip the bare cable and pull to release the hood? If not, you can cut back the sleeve of the cable for access. Or you will have to look from under the car to reach it from there using vise grips or pliers.

Hood release on 95 S-10 inoperable

Have one person pull the hood release inside cab while the other person pushes down on front center of hood.  One might have to push down a few times before it releases.  This only works for stretched cable not broken cable.
