Hi,

When does this ticking sound occur?
Is it when you are in 4WD or just going along the road?

If you could define when it is occuring then it will help me to narrow the cause down.

Thanks

Jason

    Ah,

This is not your transmission it is your starter motor, the ticking sound is the solenoid not engaging the ringear properly. This is why it is getting difficult to start it.

It sounds like you may either need to replace your battery or have the staer motor overhauled.

I hope this helps, let me know if you need more information.

    Thanks

The ticking startes when i start the jeep and does it most of the time if not all the time and would that be a reason for my tranny being really hot or so you think it sould be because it was one quart low

If the ticking sounds is only when your starting your car then it will be the starter motor but if it is ticking while the car is running and while your driving then that will be the transmision ringear which could be catch on the starter pinion.

Your starter motor pinion may not be fully retracting and is therfore clashing with the ring gear. If the transmission is getting hot then you need to get pressure/flow test done on the transmission pump to ensure that the fliud is circulating properly.

But fill to the correct levels first and see if this recitifies the heat problem, if not then you have flow problems and pressure problems.

You may just need to get the transmission flushed out to solve this.

There are several possibilities that has to be checked in this problem; 1) linkage adjustments, 2) bad torque converter, 3) low transmission oil, 4) plugged filter, 5) planetary gear problems.or hub bearings or wheel bearings making noise. 6) The transmission cable.
There is a cable that routes through the floor or your jeep just under the dash and goes to the 2Hi / 2Lo level. This cable must be rubbing on something while braking or driving the jeep. You can get to the cable because

it is exposed just under the front console from the drivers side. Also if the cable looks proper and not loose then check the gromet. The gromet must be loose on this cable going into the transfer case.
Check out all the possibilities and confirm the faulty part to be replaced.

Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

Due to low oil the gears does not get engaged and it makes it tough to engage the gear and spin from one gear to other when you change.
low on oil can definitely make the ticking problem.Get the planetary gear checked.
Thanks for keeping update with your query.

96 Jeep Grand Cherokee wont shift into 3rd gear, and it thunks when putting it in reverse, then makes a rattling kind of ticking sound????

check your transmission fluid. They will be hard to shift, almost like it has to be "forced" when the fluid level gets too low. Just make sure the car is running and at normal operating temperature when you check it. Do not check it when it is off, or it has just been cranked. It will not be as accurate.

Where is the speed sensor at on a 1993 jeep grand cherokee

On 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4WD 5.2L MFI 8cyl the Vehicle Speed Sensor - is located in Transmission / Transfer case extension housing (tail section), near where the drive shaft attaches to the transmission. The sensor has three wires (white / black, black / light blue and white / orange).

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I'll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using Fixya, and have a nice day.

91 cherokee shifts fine at fist but after a minute or so it wont shift out of first gear. changed the output speed sensor but no change

Sounds like a bad out speed sensor. Are you sure you replaced the correct sensor? This trans(AW340)Has an output speed sensor and a vehicle speed sensor. The output speed sensor is located on the side of tail housing just next to where it bolts to transmission case. The vehicle speed sensor will be about midway of the tail housing or on the transfer case tail housing on the 4x4 models. It may be a good idea to have a tranny shop you trust run a diagnostic and see if you are getting output sensor signal to TCM( transmission control module behind glove box)and take a look at TPS (throttle position sensor)signal when it is hot to make sure you replace the correct part.I have seen bad TPS sensors on these jeep not affect engine drivability because the sensor is really two(one for trans and one for engine)thus the two plugs on the TPS sensor for the automatic Cherokee.Good Luck and let me know if I can help.

94 jeep grand cherokee

Sorry, at first glance, I was thinking that you might be able to pull it off. But, having given it some thought....

To answer your question simply, the tranny will not work as it is. To my recolection, the transmissions changed midway through the 1993 production period for the Grand Cherokee. Even the mounts in your 94 had changed from the 91.

Having said that, there may very well be a conversion kit or adapter kit available to make this possible. But, I'm not aware of one and, based on previous experiences, I would not think it would be cost-effective or easy.

Good luck with your project.
