P0505 code on a 1998 BMW 540i, what would most likely resolve this issue?

code p0505 refers to idle speed control (ISC) system --malfunction=== causes ---wiring---ISC actuator/IAC valve --throttle motor --throttle valve tight/ sticking---ECM
what you need to do is to contact a BMW service center spares department and get prices for those parts and a quote for the cost to install the new parts then make the decision

My car , E60 2004 530D goes into "transm.failsafe " continuously. Ive reset it and then its fine for a day or 2. Thers oil under the car still ( light brown) when parked. I had the oil topped...

I do think this is a low oil condition and you need to get it addressed now.Low oil will damage the transmission very quickly. The factory trans oil in this car is a light brown and almost the color of motor oil.The oil in an automatic transmission is not just for lubrication, it is also the hydraulic and cooling medium.Low oil means low pressure which means slip which means damage.Have the car towed to a sevice facility. This transmission can cost 4 to 5 thousand to repair.Good luck!

Have your transmission rebuilt if you do decide to keep the vehicle. Cost approx 1,900 to 2,600.

1997 528i doesn't shift between 1st and 2nd but if I shift to S3 and back to Drive it shifts

Hi,
I had the same problem with my 1997 528i also. After doing a little research and talking to some mechanics that told me to replace the neutral safety switch located on the side of the transmission. I got the switch from BMW dealer and it cost around $300. After installing it the transmission shifted like new.

Need a Belt Diagram for 2001 BMW 325ci

Whether you plan on DIY maintenance or not, I suggest you invest in a service manual for your car. When available, I like the Haynes manuals better than Chilton.

We have one with each vehicle and if you don't decide to do something yourself, it still serves as a guide so you can see if a quoted labor cost is justified or not.
It's a one-time cost that will pay itself back each time you refer to it:

Installation of a 2002 stratus transmission

It is worth the pay of about $9.00 online to get a diagram and print it. otherwise you will have to buy a manual which will cost more. And even more to pay a mechanic to do it.
