Check the voltage at every cylinder and its coil one by one.Any of the one is not getting appropriate voltage.,Either its got loose or overheated .The overheating can be due to many reasons.Oil got leaked or spilled on the injectors.Check the voltage at each coil pack one by one.It should show 12 volts. If its low then this will be the problem and the cylinder has to be replaced. The other reason for misfiring is Problem is fuel system. The fuel pump or fuel filter blocked. Check out. Also check the fuel pressure.A oil getting mixed with the gas will make the vehicle misfire. Another cause of misfire is blocked IAC or Dirty MAF. That is.Idle Air Control Valve or Mass Air Flow Sensor. This both has to be checked. It is possible that you have a fuel delivery problem. You will need to check the fuel pressure with a gauge and hose long enough to drive and watch what the fuel pressure is doing especially under a load. The idle air control (IAC) valve on my 4.0 L OHV is on the driver's side of engine mounted on the side of the upper "plastic" intake manifold. The MAF sensor is located in the air duct between the air filter and the throttle body. this all can be possible for misfiring. Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

Have you tried to see if the cyl#2 fuel injector is firing with a fuel injector tester?

also, how is the antifreeze coolant level? I once had a cadillac deville from 1997 that had a leak into a cylinder that caused a bad miss.

Check the compression on that cylinder, make sure the valves are seating, then if all this is good, there is a intake leak somewhere, but make sure the spark plug is firing,if it is not,it is most likely the computer. Also check the fire to the injector, and make sure if it is pulsing or not,if it is not, replace the computer.

If this was a fixed code, you might try removing the negative battery cable for 25 seconds, and then put it back on,see if the computer will fire number 2,is there spark on the spark plug?

  • be_dietrich Jul 12, 2010

how do i test if the injector is firing?, it is a brand new injector. also didnt mention the problem differs , sometimes miss is weak and others it is bad, only really notice at idle, when accelerating and driving it seems ok

It is sounding more like a intake leak,a crack in the intake on the inside,in the valley.when some oil is splashed up,on the crack, the miss is not so bad, this seals the crack up a little. If the cylinder is firing at all, then the injector and all it1s components are working.Have the intake removed and inspected for a bad gasket,or crack on the under side of the intake on that cylinder.I have got the same problem with mine.

  • be_dietrich Jul 13, 2010

that sounds like it might be it, it does have a ticking noise, almost like a exhaust leak, what do you think, if i spray carb cleaner around it that should give me a better idea

At high rpms, the miss is not noticable, because of the vacuum is good, idle is where it is felt, because the cylinder needs more vacuum, and is not getting it,and along with the oil in the engine sucking up against the crack, helps seal it off,it being on the inside, the crack that is,makes it hard to diagnose. You got spark, you have injector pulse, cause it is a new one, hardly likely it is a bad one, doing the same thing, and if it where fuel pressure having a problem, all the other cylinders would have a problem. There is no back fire,or dead miss all the time,so that rules out compression problem,it is the only thing left ,nothing else will cause the problem.

If you had code P0305, I don't know why they would have done anything to the #2 cylinder but if they have already replaced the plugs, wires and injector; here are a few more items to check:
1) Check connections from ECM. Look for any corrosions or bent/broken pins.
2) Check the fuel line pressure
3) Check the engine compression
4) And if the above are good, then you will probably have a defective ECM

Number five plug not firing

I'm assuming this is a DIS(distibutorless ignition system). If it is,the most common cause is a defective coil pack. Each coil will fire a pair of cylinders together on 4 and 6 cylinder engines(one "waste" spark, one to ignite the mixture).Try swapping the wires at the coil pack to see if the misfire follows the coil tower,or the same cylinder misfires(keep in mind that a check engine light means you will have to clear the code to get the computer to feed that cylinder fuel before you start it up again). If the other cyl on the pack now misfires(i believe 1+5 are on the same pack on a Ford engine),then the coil is bad(spark is "leaking"to ground). If the same cyl still misfires, try swapping a wire+plug from another cylinder.

96 ford Taurus. took it in for smog and failed, code said we needed to replace the camshaft position censor, so we did. it ran a little better. took it back in after 50 miles and now getting the p0302 code...

Codes do not tell you what to replace.
The cam sensor most likely was okey

PO302--as you said, is a misfire on cylinder #2,work on that problem
Spark plug wire,bad coil pack,etc.

Seek professional help,it will be quicker, cheaper in the long run, and they can verify it will pass inspection.

OBD Codes and check lights, only indicate a possible system malfunction
Then you need the knowledge, to diagnose the system ,and find the cause of the MIL Lamp being on

Sounds like either a bad plug wire, or coil pack. This is about all that would cause the misfire.
