Check for a drain by putting an inductive ammeter probe around the positive or negative wire on the battery.

If there is more than .2 Amps of draw when the car is not on, then you have too much of a drain caused by something in the car's electrical system.

Take the car to an auto electric shop to try to find the short or source of the drain.

The car cranks and fires but will not start. recently replaced the head gasket because of overheating it last year. but timing and all is correct

You may have a really dead battery that needs to be replace. If its sat for a long time its likely dead and a jump won't be enough. If your car has an alarm system this will also need to be reset.

Jump start

I would say you never checked to see if the battery is any good

I most likely is dead or below 12.6 volts & you never jump a dead
battery,you try charging it

Jumping is not charging a battery, you need to own a battery charger

If the battery keeps draining or won't hold a charge you need
a new one, then if the problem exists you have someone do a
Parasitic Current Test to find out which circuit is staying on

What could be wrong if the battery light came on and not long after we lost power? when we got a jump start two times it would not hold the charge long enough to even move it?

It sounds like you have a bad alternator. Be sure to check to make sure your battery connections are tight and clean. If it is your alternator you will need to charge your battery before you run your car after replacing your alternator. You may also have a bad battery but generally if you jump a bad battery your car will stay running as the alternator will keep it running but if you ran your battery dead a simple jump start will not keep the car running if your alternator is bad. Most part stores can test your alternator and battery. Your battery will need to be charged before it can be tested. They do not need to be in the car to test them.

My car will not start. when i turn the ignition, i keep getting a repeated clicking sound under the hood

You either have a bad starter or a dead battery. Turn on the headlights...if they go dim or off when you try to start the engine, you may have a dead battery. Try to get a jump and if this doesn not work, you may need to replace the starter....good luck

Car wont run.

Does it crank well and all that but with no spark or is the battery just dead? If the battery is dead, it either won't charge while alternator is spinning or the alternator doesn't charge well enough to keep the battery charged well. If it jumps and runs indefinitely, battery is done. If it jumps and dies, alternator is done. If battery and alternator are fine, and you have no spark, you may need a new coil, new spark plug wires if they are worn out and too resistant, pick up coil inside of distributor, or you may have some other ignition system issue.

Most times when an alternator fails, it starts charging less and less till the car won't keep running or it won't start the next time. If the alternator hasn't failed, the battery needs replacing. If your battery is 5 or more years old this is a very good possibility. If your alternator failed and you have killed your battery many times before replace them both. Each time you drain a battery to dead you lose about 10% of its current capacity.

If the battery is fine and engine will not turn, starter may need replacing. Hope I helped.

I was jumping someone else's car and I had the jumper cables on the battery and I try to start the car but it didn't start. The car went dead. Then I jumped it and the car ran fine but it will not...

If the terminal connections are good and tight and it has a good ground then it appears the battery would be at fault. To be sure, charge the battery with a charger on a low setting over night and test it again.

Batter won't stay up after jumping it off

Take the battery to an auto parts store and have them test it, most do this for free. If you can, take the alternator with you. If your able to keep the car running after the jump, try to drive it to the auotparts store for the testing.

IF THE CAR WON'T TAKE A JUMP THAN YOU NEED TO REPLACE THE BATTERY. BUT FIRST CHECK THE TERMINALS FOR CORROSION AND MAKE SURE THEY ARE TIGHT. I HOPE THIS HELPS YOU. PLEASE KEEP ME INFORMED. THANKS FOR USING FIX-YA. AND THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR AN HONEST RATING. BEST OF LUCK. P.S. CHECK ALL THE FUSES BEFORE YOU BUY A NEW BATTERY.

My 2003 PT cruiser dies at a stop sign and then it won't start

You may need a new battery (alternator will keep it running once jumped but if you stop, the idle may not keep the car powered long enough). If you've never replaced the battery, its about time - they have a life of about 5 years.
