Question about 1996 Mercury Sable

1 Answer

Overheating when on highway or using air conditioner

Was driving on the highway for extended amount of time with air on. Stopped for gas and noticed smoke coming from under hood and smelled antifreeze. Opened antifreeze cap and all came shooting out. waited and filled back up. Now can still drive but notice that when air is on car overheats. when driving long distances car will begin to overheat at high rpms...when slow down to 40 temp comes back down if still driving. What could be the cause of this?

The condenser for the ac is not getting enough air, look for the reason, look in front of the car at the radiator, see if there is something restricting air flow threw the radiator and condenser.

Go to the auto parts and get a container of Heat fuel treatment and get a new fuel filter also. Then pour in the proper amount of fuel treatment and change the fuel filter. This should fix your problem. Also when was the last time you changed the air filter. This would help it run better and increase your mileage.

Hi billberger2

When the air conditioner turns on, the car computer also increases the engines revs to counter the load of the air con. It should not generally be noticeable however. Will do some research to see why. :)

Is the serpentine belt still intact? The grinding noise maybe the water pump which would account for the overheating.

I would like to know how to get better gas mileage on a car-do I need a new air filter-it is only a 4 cylinder car.

The best way to improve gas mileage is to change your driving habits. K&N filters claim they can increase mileage, but there really is not 'miracle device' that can do so. Make sure the vehicle is running well, plugs and wires are all in good shape, air and fuel filters are clean.

Stay on highways as much as possible, and drive around with a glass of water that has no lid and is filled pretty high. Attempt to drive without spilling the water. This will drastically improve economy.

You describe a typical 'cooling fan' problem. When moving through the air, the AC operates normally, but when stopped in traffic, it doesn't... correct?
