Not right away but it will cause you to lose coolant and the low coolant will cause you to over heat. It's a dealer part but you can probably get one from an auto salvage yard at a resonable price.

My 1997 camry overheated. We flushed the radiator, but noticed cracks in the reservoir. Will this be causing the issue, and will repair / repalcement stop the overheating?


The overflow tank won't cause it to overheat. If you have added radiator stop leak just replace the radiator is stopped up.

Cause of engine overheating.


Wait a minute. In your other duplicate question you did not say the tank was cracked, right ?
If the tank will not hold coolant, it will leak out and not be able to refill the radiator when it cools down.

I have a 2000 BMW 328i the tank along side the radiator has cracked and there is oil in the radiator fluid. Could this be from the cracked tank?


Likely the cause is the opposite of what you are thinking. Oil in the radiator (engine oil) is caused by a blown cylinder head gasket. When that gasket fails it can overpressurize the cooling system by permitting compression from the pistons to enter. (cooling system pressure rarely is above 20psi...compression pressure is more like 150psi. That will cause the radiator tank to burst)

Changed bad water pump and timing but car is still overheating causes


Overheating is not always caused by a bad water pump or bad engine firing timing.

The most common causes are:
  • faulty radiator cap: steam/water will be escaping from the caps when engine is hot or oveflow tank overflows or empty!
  • crack cylinder head gasket: check when engine is cold thru radiator cap hole for milky oil in water radiator or large bubbles in radiator water after starting engine. Also check if water steam comes out of exhaust.
  • cylinder head itself: same symtoms as for gasket above.

Cracked radiator


if the radiator is cracked, do not drive it. you stand the risk of overheating and doing severe engine damage. take this to a radiator shop. there they can do the repair by removing the radiator and repairing or replacing the tanks on the radiator and boiling out the core and then resealing adn reinstall. its like getting a new radiaitor at half the cost.

Plastic radiator repair


I doubt you can actually fix it "yourself", but you can save lots of money by taking it to a radiator shop instead of buying a used or new radiator. They can replace the plastic tank for the bad side, but it is usually the drivers side because this is where the hottest water exits the engine and causes the plastic to crack. I removed the radiator myself and took mine to a shop and they repaired it for $40........cannot repair yourself because the tank has to be crimped on!!!! And radiator "stop leak" products will not work because they are for metal tanks!!!

Still over heating


On my 94 (106,000 miles) I did the same thing as you with an overheat problem. It came out of the blue one day driving. Had never had a problem before then wham steam everywhere.. Changed the radiator, waterpump, and thermostat and still had overheating. I backflushed everything and hand flushed the coolant tank to get every last bit of gunk out. Still a problem. Was thinking like the last comment - Cracked head. Well are you ready for the solution.... I neglected to check the radiator cap on the coolant tank. It was original to the car and I just didn't think about it. Changed it out for a new one and no more overheating.. It was obviously not holding the system under much pressure. Enough for a short drive but that's all. All that work for a $10.00 part. Makes perfect sense now as Impalas run hotter than a lot of other cars anyway. Need the pressure kept on the coolant to keep it in check.. Hope this helps... Jeff
