Question about 1988 Chevrolet G20

Open Question

I have a 1988 Chevrolet G20 Van with a 5.0 Liter tbi V8 engine that has 137000 miles on it. The Van runs well except for this one thing. no matter what your speed whether you are stopped at a stoplight or going 55 down the highway as soon as you step on the gas and try to accelerate the engine will cut out briefly for one-quarter of a second or maybe one-half second and we hear a loud noise resembling a backfire at the very same time. it's like the engine actually "coughs". if you keep your foot on the gas and keep accellerating it will cough again every 3 to 5 seconds or so and will keep doing this until you take your foot completely off the gas pedal or the engine catches up to your desired speed and levels off. when you are going down the road at a steady engine rpm none of this stuff happens. We just replaced the fuel filter and now it runs even smoother at a steady rpm. What gives? Ignition system? Vacuum advance? Fuel pump?!?!! i'd like to hear your ideas...

Have you checked the ignition timing? Maybe you need to turn the distributor to the left or right if you don't have the timing light gun

I would suggest a few things ... first and the most important... check that you have the wires in the proper order on the distributer. next have the timing checked.

I replaced 02 censor as pre bd1 code reader but service engine light still comes on and the van runs with a gallop

The gallop you say that is happening I assume is a cycling Normal RPM to High RPM condition. This is most commonly due to a problem in the Vacuum advance system or a loose or stretched timing belt/chain. Check the timing and see if that is fluctuating.

rebuild carb yourself, unless housing is cracked. look online for rebuild kit. They usually come with instructions. If not, just take good notes while taking it apart so you get it back together right. Did they say what was wrong with it? What were symptoms?

I need a fan belt diagram chevy van 350 tbi -88

Be vary careful I think that it may have a reverse flow water pump. You can install the belt two different ways. Both will work but the wrong way will shorten you engine life a whole lot. Try your local library for a book on you car.

you may need to use the control arms, springs and knuckles, as the ball joints of the 93 g20 may not fit the 96 g3500.

If it is getting spark and fuel check the timing. The timing chain may have jumped.Take out #1 spark plug and tap engine till the compression stroke comes up. To check just hold your finger over the plug hole and the compression will blow it out. Then rock crank by hand and set to top dead center. Take distributer cap off and see if rotor faces #1 cylinder. If you have spark to the plugs and the plugs are good and you have fuel timing or compression is all that is left.

Low power when accelerating

I thought the filter might be the issue here, on carb cars the engine tends to stall out with a plugged filter.
