Question about Chrysler PT Cruiser

1 Answer

On April-2010. I bought a pre-owned 2004 Chrysler pt cruiser car at 100K miles, auto Transmission for my daughter. After driving the car for a week, the car died at suddenly at a stop sign. Apparently the timing belt broke, so we towed the car to an auto repair shop and replaced the timing belt and the water pump. After replaced the timing belt and water pump, she drove the car for 2 days and found the steering gear/rack leaking oil, brought the car to a technician and changed the steering gear/rack. When we got the car back, she drove for a few days and saw the air bag light on and the horn does not work and I want a solution to these ongoing problems. I would appreciate any help.

Well, if the timing belt broke, and was replaced that solved a regularly scheduled maintenance issue.

The water pumps do go bad on cars over 80,000 mi. frequently.
So that's normal.

Also, the steering gear/rack being replaced is not unusual for a car that old, as well, and is unrelated to the water pump and timing belt.

Actually if the air bag light was one and the horn doesn't work you;re looking at a possible disconnection at the air bag module and/or air bag that is stuffed in a box behind the steering wheel horn cover. Also, there is a connection to ground behind the steering wheel beeper cover on the steering wheel.

On the pre-owned 2004 Chrysler pt cruiser I would maybe have those problems fixed the dealer or a local reputable repair shop, possibly taking the vehicle back to the one who did the rack and pinion and ask if the last service had anything to do with the latest 'gremlins' that you seem to be experiencing. I don't think that there is but you can ask.

Your car is less than 10 years old so the 'dealer' should have parts and know how to repair the latest horn and air bag problem without reverting to salvage yard parts.

If you are not an auto mechanic, you need to have a shop do it for you. You run the risk of damaging your vehicle if you do it incorrectly.

I have pt cruiser 2.4 manual. Why am i only getting 25 mpg. 31.000 miles on clock

The government fuel economy specs for your year PT Cruiser are between 24 and 26 mpg highway, depending on what transmission you have (auto, 4spd standard, 5 spd standard), so you are getting what you should. Unfortunately, the PT Cruiser can't do any better than that. It does seem that a car that size would do better, but Chrysler needs to improve gas consumption on all it's vehicles, that is one reason they are in such trouble now.

Describe your 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser timing

Replace the belt at 100k with a new water pump pulley and tensioner. It would not be a bad idea while u r in there to replace the center motor mount. When the mount fails it is a pricey fix not a bad Idea to replace it since you have to remove it to do the belt.
