There is a small button,on the switch itself, you will have to reach under the dash up to the switch and depress the button, and push in,and then pull out on the headlight stem. The knob will come off also,it has a release where the stem goes in the knob, pushing the retainer down will allow you to pull the knob off.If this was at all helpful, please rate, thank you.

Turn the know till you see a slot in the knobs base. A small nail or simular item must be used to just the retaining clip towards the know to remove the knob
It will pull straight off when pressure is applied to the clip

Cannot get the windshield wiper and light knobs off in order to remove the cover. They do not just pull off?

For everyone's future reference, the windshield wiper knob has a spring metal clip holding the knob to the shaft.
There is a small slot under the knob. Starting at the back edge of the knob, use a small screwdriver to push into that slot in the same direction you want to remove the knob.
That will push the metal clip and release the knob.

All lights work except rear lights for driving at night, what happend two days earlier i went to turn on headlights an pulled the whole knob outta the dash an just stuck it back in, got the headlights on...

I can't see the switch causing the rear lights to fail without affecting the headlights also. Is it possible that the only headlights you got to work at the time are the daylight headlights - for visibility during the daytime? the breaklights work so you've not got faulty lights. Also the fact that both left and right brake lights work points to the switch as being the culprit. Is it possible that when you reinstalled the knob it's just not placed on there correctly? That would prevent the switch from possibly operating correctly. Check your turn signals. If they both work that should instill confidence that the switch is the culprit. If you're brave (I don't know your level of "handymanness") you could pull the switch knob off again and this time look very closely at the knob and the post it slides onto. Most knobs (I believe yours should twist, not pull, but I'm not sure as you don't list the model) press onto a post that is "D" shaped. The knob has a corresponding recessed hole that is also shaped like a "D" Assuming (yeah, it makes an xss out of you and me...) that you placed the knob correctly the first time is it possible that the dash cutout is limiting the switch movement? This would only occur if the knob wasn't placed correctly. I'm not sure again because you don't list the model. If all else fails then replace the switch - available at most all auto parts stores. Good luck!

Dash lights will not work 1993 g m c van

you may need to replace the headlight switch it controls the dimer function, try turning the knob to the left your dome light should come on,alittle to the right and that controls the dash lights,if bad you can remove the old one by reaching under the dash and on the switch body there is a small spring loaded pin you push in and pull the knob out to the end on the shalf ,this allows you to remove the knob and shalf so you can unbolt the switch and disconnect the wire plug.

How do I replace headlight switch in my 95 Pontiac Bonneville

assuming that u have replaced any bad fuses. you have to remove the cover around the instrument panel. then u need to have a socket small enough to remove the screws that hold the head light switch in place. the head light switch knob should come out. you may have to pull it out first before u take the cover off. then remove the old switch and disconect the wires then replace the switch. i hope this helps

Replacing the light switch on a 89 mercury grand marquis

I have had to change this switch. You probably got the dash torn apart down to the piece that the knob on the light switch will keep you from getting that piece off? yes? There is a pin on the light switch frame that has to be depressed. Once you do that, you can pull the knob and shaft out of the switch assembly. After that, the plastic panel will come off and you can R & R the switch. Save that shaft and knob, you will need it for the new switch, unless the new switch uses a different size shaft arragement. Then you may have to but a corresponding shaft/knob assembly. I made the mistake of slicing the knob in half with a Dremel cutter and had to buy a new knob for the shaft.

Light on dash board not working

On a Buick Rendezvous there is a very peculiar little switch that pops out of the headlight control knob, simply press th middle of that knob and another rather long skinny knob will pop out. To make the lights brighter turn that knob clockwise to dim turn counterclockwise.
