This one does require a tool to loosen the fan clutch from the water pump shaft. Part of the tool holds the pulley and the other part is spanner wrench used to loosen the clutch. An important note on these fan clutches: Once you have the fan clutch off DO NOT let it lay with the rear side of the fan pointing downward as the silicone fluid that provides the "clutch" action can drain into the bearing and cause the clutch not to work. Once you have the clutch off just lean the fan and clutch against something so it is standing upright just as it is when it's bolted to the water pump until you are ready to put it back on. Hope this helps you out a bit!

Testimonial: "I tried the Advance too loaner. Spanner had no bolts to hold. I used a carpenters cat's paw to hold the edge of the pully and broke the bolt with a 12" crescent. Cleaned teh pulley up with a file so the small screatsh would not eat the serpantine belt. I did not knpw about th esilicone , thanks."

Removal of fan clutch on a 1999 Dodge Dakota 3.9 engine.

They make a specil tool to remove it, but you can use a long chisel and hammer to break the fan clutch lose. The chisel has to be long enough so you can reach the latge looking nut that is between the fan clutch and the water pump pulley. Take the top part of the radiator shroud off by removing the two bolts on each side of shroud. Than there is 4 to 6 bolts going across the front of the shroud. Next take the long chisel and catch the edge of the large nut and tap it so the large nut rotates counter clockwise when you hit it with fairly good force. That should break it loose. If not hit it harder. Once it is lose you can turn counter clockwise until it comes off. Remove the the fan blade and install it in the reverse order. Hope this helps. Leave comment.

Replacing water pump on 5.2L 99 dodge dakota water pump pully is broke so i cant take off the shaft that holds the fan and fan clutch im just looking for sugestions

somehow you need to grab a part of the pulley to prevent it from turning.i dont know if you were aware that the fan and clutch do not unbolt byt unscrew like a nut the directin to remove is on the fan shroud. if you cant get the fan off take the pump off with the fan on it, it can be done just you will have to remove shroud with it.then wrestle with it on the bench

I am trying to replace water pump and need to remove the clutch fan first. How do I do this? It is a manual V6 1999 Dodge Dakota truck.

Before removing the belt turn the nut counter clockwise. You may have hit the wrench with a hammer to loosen it. Because of limited space, the fan and shroud have to be removed at the same time. Do not lay the fan clutch in a horizontal position, stand it up.

How to replace water pump on 1995 dodge dakato 5.2 liter V8

When I do those I find it's easier to get some of the stuff out of the way. Fan shroud, Alternator, AC compressor(don't remove AC hoses just swing it over to the side) and the AC/alternator mount bracket. If you don't have the special hose clamp plyers they are worth buying. (those clamps are difficult with regular plyers) The fan clutch has a special wrench which is thinner. When you start the job break loose the fan clutch before you remove the belt. It keeps tension on the pulley. The nut is normal threading and usually comes loose with a sharp rap of the hammer on the fan clutch wrench.
Here is an illustration of the water pump bolts. I hope this helps you out. let me know how it goes.6f7219e.gif
