Use a spray solution of clorine bleach with the fan on full,(clorine will kill all known germs) the clorine smell will go away very quickly,if ithe windows are left open when you do it.....also clean out the vent box in front of the windscreen.

I have a 2009 Cadillac Escalade that I have just purchased, vents smell like maple syrup when the AC is not on Why???

Well it could be something the previous owner spilled in the vents, or sprayed into the vents to try to cover up a moldy smell.
You might try a detail shop to get rid of the smell.

Musty smell from A/C in 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GT SE

Most common cause is water sitting in the bottom of the a/c heater box. Make sure the outside drain is open. There are spray products for using on the vents.

Dead field mouse or cat? Usually caused by build of smoking and other odors that stick to the condensation created by the a/c and eventually becomes kind of a permanent smell in the vents.

HI, you can check with your local parts supplier ( Napa, Advance, Auto Zone, ect). There are numerous products out that help get rid of the musty moldy smell that happens in the A/C systems. These products are sprayed into the evaporator cases either through a small opening or a drilled hole. If this doesn't help that wonderful little mouse may have found his way into the case and not made it out and then you will have to the case removed and cleaned out. good luck

Dirt blowing out vents and has a bad (musty) odor

If you live in a dusty area it is a good idea to use the recirc button on your a/c control head. This will keep the dust to a minimum.
To get rid of the smell you can take a bottle of air freshener and spray it in the heater box air intake that is located just below the windshield on the right hand side of the van. Do this with the a/c on and blowers on high.
If you use recirc as much as possible the dust should slowly work it way out of the system.
If these fixes don't help the dash will have to be removed and a/c evaporator will have to be cleaned or replaced.
