87 ford ranger coolant leak not from water pump replaced it today appears to be coming from right behind it


I can give you a couple of possible causes(1)freeze plugs in the block,there round & look like drink coasters,but are brass(2)intake manifold gasket can be leaking from the corners where water jackets are/also the head gasket both are on all four corners,I don't know what motor you have,but there are pipes that are called crossovers that run from the back off the timing cover to the heater core on the fire wall,sometimes on top of the manifold on one side & there will be a hose connected to it possible bad hose or corroded tube?

Water leak from back side of motor


Freeze plugs in each head as well as in the block will leak over time. Don't just replace one...replace them all or you will keep having leaks as each freeze plug rusts through enough to leak.

I am seeing water behind the pump on the top of the motor in the v under all the fuel injection / intake is that normal for water pump to leak there if its bad?


its not normal. the water pump will leak in front, not back. There is a pipe and hose down in the VEE that can leak. If the pipe is bad, you will need to remove the pump to replace it. The intake manifold will need to come off, to replace the pipe/ hose. the hose connects a pipe behind the water pump to a pipe at the rear of the block to a heater hose.

This model uses a composite (some would say plastic) intake manifold, which has been known to develop cracks in the area of the thermostat housing. In addition, the water pump has a pipe to the back of it that emerges in the rear of the intake manifold. Both of these areas peculiar to this motor are known to leak coolant. In its history, many of these plastic manifolds had to be replaced, and there were even techinical bulletins from Ford on them. If you have leak in the tube or pipe that goes under the intake manifold to the back of the water pump, then you will likely want the dealer to fix it, as you may need a new water pump.
Two things then to watch: 1) coolant level and color and 2) any signs of leakage behind the main serpentine belt in the area of the water pump.
Since the serpentine belt is large on the 4.6L motor, and due to its rotation, it is possible that you only have a bad water pump and that the liquid is being thrown by the rotation of the motor. The water pump is not a difficult repair, as it comes off with only a few cap screws. However, if it is detached from the rear inlet pipe (as I mentioned above), it would require that the manifold be removed for it to be reattached. This is not a difficult job, but is very time consuming.

Ok if you replace the water pump has to disassemble the front of the engine time to remove the belt to replace the pump tube If you have to remove the intake manifold to ban the base where the nozzles and have a good space for I hope to change the tube will serve this thanks

I have a 1998 intrigue oldsmobile and I want to know if it has a gasket in the motor because it is leaking water from one side of motor.


this is a broken or leaking heater pipe it is locvated on the side of the motor with the water pump etc the tensioner is on a housing that is part of your problem take off the alternator then the tensioner housing and the pipe is right there on the side of the housing and 90s into the motor

Water pump leaking


If you have a 2.4 liter engine, you would be well-advised to take this to a mechanic rather than try replacing it yourself. The water pump in the 2.4 liter engine is driven off of the timing chain, and is on the back side of the engine. You have to remove the serpentine belt, right-side motor mount, harmonic balancer, timing cover, timing chain tensioner, timing chain, exhaust manifold, upper exhaust pipe, etc. When you put it all back together, you have to make sure to properly re-time the cams to the crank shaft. Without a vehicle hoist and a number of special tools, the job would probably take a good amateur mechanic about one full weekend to complete. A well-practiced professional with the right tools can do it in about 6 hours.

If you have the 3.1L V6, the water pump is pretty easy to get to. Just remove the serpentine belt and then unbolt the water pump and remove it from the engine. I would think an amateur could do it in 2-3 hours, and a professional could do it in less than one.

Water/coolent leaking from behind the timing cover


Water pump is on the left side of the timing belt in the cover and spins on an O-ring to adjust the belt. Their is a coolant pipe to the the thermostat housing behind the timing covers backing plate also. Be sure to replace the timing belt with the tensioner/ oil seals along with the water pump. Remove the timing covers back plate and you will find two bolt to the pipe as mentioned. It has a large o-ring behind it. Have fun with this one. From: Ronnie Wrench
