Question about 1992 Buick Roadmaster

2 Answers

Car will not start. car will run for a moment or two if I pour gas in the fuel injection manifold. The fuel gauge is pegged to overfull. all other gauges seem to work fine. Fuel gauge remains pegged even with the fuel pump electric wires disconnected. I believe it is a bad fuel pump relay or the the low oil pressure sensor switch is disabling the fuel pump relay. However I cannot locate the fuel pump relay?

The oil pressure sending unit will be the problem for that primes the pum when you turn the key to the on position. You will hear the fuel pump running for 5 seconds when doing that. If the pump is running when you have the key turned to the ON position the fuel pump relay is the problem. The relay will be located under the hood on the firewall. When purchasing one buy one at a GM dealer & not an aftermarket one. Same with the pressure switch too

The fuel pump relay is located on the upper left side of the firewall when faceing the motor. Two little square black boxes. 1 box is for Air/con and other box is for fuel pump. Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

My truck starts and dies after a few seconds but if i press the gas it dies instantly

Have you checked the throttle body to see if the ventury butterfly is operating properly? Its most likely a fuel prob. You may want to check fuel pressure as well. So e parts stores will rent or loan a gauge to check it at the fuel injection rail at the intake manifold. I would start there to make sure you are getting proper pressure and volume. Ask your parts store or dealer for what pressure should be. And make sure you leave the guage on for ten min or so while the car sits not running to see how fast pressure falls.

What would make a not start unless I pour gas into intake

Hi Clyde:
Since you mention "gas rail" I'm assuming fuel injected.
I'd check the fuel pressure in the rail. Should be around 40 PSI.
If pressure is OK then injectors not working. Time to check cps.
You know the spark side is OK since it will run.

1997 tahoe quit running pouring gas in carb truck runs until gas is gone then stalls changed fuel pump what else could it be?

Your truck is fuel injected, so no carburetor is used.
Have you checked base fuel pressure with a gauge, and do you know for sure that the injectors are opening ?

Wont start sometimes, only when i pour gas into the intake manifold. and then cant keep it started. only stays running by lightly tapping the accelerator

it sounds like there is no fuel getting to intake.
when you step down on accelerator, it is designed to squirt a shot of fuel into the intake, which would keep it running for a few seconds. same as pouring gas down intake.

you never stated if you had carburation or injection system, in either case no fuel is getting through on its own.
which could be a variety of problems depending on which system you had.

If I pour gas into carbarater it will run but if u try to start it the regular way it doesnt

Can be several things . By pouring fuel into the carby it is going into the inlet manifold making a rich mixture . check the gas has not leaked from the carby. over night, Check the choke flap is closed before starting with the engine cold. Check the carby.accelerator gas pump is working. by working the linkage you will see a spray of gas injected into the carby. throat. If not the remove and repair.

My Chevy 2500 p/u will only start and run when I pour gas in the carb...if I kill it for 2 minutes , I have to do it again to get it started ...uhg..frustrating !!! One guy told me it was a spider sumthing...

Lets start with terminology. I am assuming the truck is newer than 1987 so you would have fuel injection. No carb.
If it is a vortec engine, either a 4.3 or larger, and built after 1993, it could have central port fuel injection. That style uses one injector and a spider of lines that go to each intake port. This is inside the upper intake manifold.
Vortec engines require more fuel pressure than engines with port fuel injection or throttle body injection. So the first thing you need to do is check base fuel pressure before and after you crank the engine. You'll need a pressure gauge to do it. Normal fuel pressure at idle for a port injected engine is 35psi and 60psi for a central pfi system.

This truck is fuel injected, the problem sounds like a weak fuelpump, it runs when you pour gas into it until that gas runs out, the first thing is to test the fuel preasure, if the pump is weak it may run with gas poured into it but wont idle, also a common problem is the coolant temp sensor and the ground wires to thermostat housing bolt but i wont bet its the pump inside the fuel tank, if you put a fuel gauge on it there should be at least 55-61 psi if its a few pounds lower it can cause problems, you have everything else and it runs with gas poured so its a fuel problem check the preasure, theres a valve up top on the fuel line to connect a fuel gauge to it, start there hope this is helpful.

1980 mercedes v8 gas, fuel problem running?

If the car has a carb (not fuel injected) try removing the air filter cover and pouring a small amount of gas down the carb . Now try and start it aND see if it will start. If it starts and runs for a 10-30 seconds and then dies, it is a fuel delivery problem. Car should start if you add gas unless the car is being flooded out. I can't really help you with a fuel injection system except to suggest to replace the fuel filter and see what happens. Just remember you need spark, fuel and air to make combustion. YOu say the car fires so you have spark. I would focus on the fuel delivery.

No start - good spark, no fuel

Hi hgudmund,
If you have fuel injection, (the diagnosis will be different than for carbs)....What I would suggest, as a first step, replace the fuel filter....

If there is still no improvement, this is how the pump should operate with fuel injection. the pump should start when the ignition is turned on and after a short burst, cut out, until the engine is cranked up, at which time the pump will run all the time ....

Checking the fuel delivery can be dangerous without the correct equipment for the injection system.....You'll need a fuel pressure test guage....The injection pressure should run at around three and a half bar, minimum....if it's lower than that, you'll need to replace the pump....

There are more tips that I can pass to you, but before I do please let me know how you get on with the first stages....and let me know if we are in fact dealing with injection or carburation?

best regards Johngee10
