Question about 2001 Ford Escort ZX2

I have a 2000 ford contour with a 2.0 vct .im doing the timing and i need to move the cams to the proper timing they both have a slot with a big lobe and a small lobe i was wondering to have the rite timing which lobes should i use the big lobe on top or the small lobe on top.

1) Remove or disconnect the following
Negative battery cable. Spark plugs. Catalytic converter. Right front wheel. Right inner splash shield.
Accessory drive belt and idler pulley.
2) Rotate the crankshaft to Top Dead Center (TDC) and install Crankshaft TDC Timing Peg T97P-6000-A.
3) Rotate the crankshaft clockwise against the peg.
4) Remove or disconnect the following:
Water pump pulley, Valve cover, Crankshaft pulley, Timing belt covers.
5) Install Camshaft Alignment Timing Tool T94P-6256-CH into the slots of both camshafts at the rear of the cylinder head to lock the camshafts into position.
6) Loosen the timing belt tensioner bolt and relieve the tension on the timing belt by disconnecting the tensioner tab from the timing cover back plate.
7) Remove the timing belt.

To install:--
Install the timing belt.Engage the timing belt tensioner tab into the timing cover back plate.Adjust the timing belt tensioner until the index marks are aligned. Tighten the tensioner bolt to 17-20 ft. lbs. (22-28 Nm).Remove the camshaft alignment tool and the crankshaft TDC peg.

Rotate the crankshaft so that the keyway is at the 3 o'clock position. This positions the right cylinder head camshafts to the neutral position.

probably the cam sensor, sometimes the sensor can get damaged or the plug gets dislodged when the timing belt is done. .

Duratec ST-220 used in the top of the line Mondeo 3.0 liter V6.

The original Duratec V6 was introduced in Europe in 1993 in the Ford Mondeo (Ford Contour/ Mercury Mystique in NA). Then in 2000 the smaller 4 cyl Mondeo engines also got the Duratec name, as well as others. Check this for 3.0L 6cyl...

I NEED TO SWAP THE ENGINE IN MY 2000 CONTOUR. I HAVE THE VCT 4-CYL, CAN I USE THE ZETEC 4-CYL WITH A PCM SWAP?

99 ford contour 2.0 dohc timing belt replacement... i have the alignment tool and blanking plug but which way are the cams turned to align?

fm1069500554000x.pngBefore installing tool. If the belt broke turn the engine so the #1 piston is half way up. This way you will not bend the valves while turning cams. If you feel that the cams are very hard to turn or stops turning then turn crank by hand to lower piston away from valve. Then turn the cams clockwise or counter clockwise slow one at a time too the proper slot position for the tool to fit. Once the cam marks are lined up bring the #1 piston to its TDC.

Need timing marks for 2002 ford explorer 4.0 engine. trying 2 check timing chain. any one know specs


There are no marks on this one. There is a special tool set to align camshafts ($900). The best you can do is to bring #1 cyl to TDC compression with both cam(valve) covers off. #5 cyl should have lobes at equal opening, exhaust just closing and intake just opening.. #1 cyl cam lobes should each be diametrically opposed to the positions of #5. If cams need to be moved, there is no registration of gear onto cam. Just loosen bolt holding gear and move cam. Retighten bolt. Roll thru 2 crank revolutions and check cam timing again.Simple.

With the rocker cover removed , if you look at the back of the camshafts you will see each one has an off centre slot. The way to get them correctly lined up is so each slot runs parallel with the face of the cylinder head. There is a special tool to lock the 2 cams together which is simply nothing more than a flat piece of steel. If you can not borrow this 'tool' the other way is to make sure each cam lobe on no4 cylinder is facing down  and pointing in on the valve tappets.

The code says Camshaft over advanced


P1381 is normally caused by
  • Cam Timing improperly set.
  • No oil flow to piston chamber.
  • Low oil pressure.
  • VCT solenoid valve stuck closed.
  • Camshaft advance mechanism binding (VCT unit).

  • There is a TSB out no 99-13-8 where you have to use a breakout box and jump pins 44 (pin 45 if vehicle has a returnless fuel sytem) and pin 103 while engine is at 2500 rpm to try and cycle the VCT solenoid and if it changes then just change the oil and filter.
    If not then either the solenoid is bad or debris is lodged in the orffices.
    How it actually works is the camshaft gear is advanced or retarded by varying oil pressure to it controlled by the solenoid. The oil galleries are very small and are easily stopped up.

    the crank notch should be up and the two square lobes have to be pointing up square with engine i used welders vise grips yes the cam bolts are torx
