Pipe from engine leaking coolant

I just replaced my radiator but discovered a pipe coming from the engine that is corroded and spraying coolant. What is this part? how difficult to replace/repair?

Cut it from a convenient area and replace it with a good quality, same inside diameter high temp. resistance hose and clamps.

My 2001 Terracan highlander has coolant leaking under the engine.Can someone tell me where the leak is coming from and how to fix it? The car has a v6 3.5l engine.


Could be welsh plugs on side of engine are corroded.
Could be a smaller pipe like a heater hose pipe or an auxilary cooling pipe .Had one of these little extra pipes on a mitsubishi sigma under the inlet manifold that was leaking.
Did you use a coolant in the engine as water can corrode welsh plugs in engines as I found out on my car !.

Thermostat gasket blown


Is it all one piece, the outlet pipe and the t-stat housing? The gasket goes on the bottom of the housing where it mates to the engine. If the coolant is leaking from the bottom of the housing, that would require a new gasket. If coolant is leaking where the radiator hose connects to the pipe, have you tried tightening the hose clamp?
If the outlet pipe and housing are separate, there may be an O-ring seal between them. You may want to pull off the radiator hose and check if the pipe is so badly corroded and rusted that it cannot seal anymore, or may have a hole in it, especially if it is thin metal.

1999 olds alero leaking anti freeze, looks like the leak is coming from between the oil pan and transmission pan. had transmission changed leak seemed to start after that and has gotton worse. Does not...


CHECK HEATER PIPE OR HEATER HOSE AND CHECK COOLANT INLET PIPE FROM THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING. CHECK HEATER OUTLET HOSE FROM THE RADIATOR OUTLET PIPE.SOUND LIKE COOLANT LEAK COMING OFF TOP OF ENGINE.

Where is thermosts located and how do i replace it?


2.2L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Properly drain and recover the coolant until the level is below the thermostat.
  3. Unfasten the coolant outlet-to-inlet manifold attaching bolt and nut, then remove the outlet.
  4. Remove the thermostat. Clean the inlet manifold and outlet mating surfaces.
To install:
  1. Install a new O-ring onto the thermostat
  2. Place the thermostat in the inlet manifold.
  3. Attach the coolant outlet to the inlet manifold, using the bolt and nut. Tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4. Refill the engine cooling system.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable, then start the engine and check for coolant leaks.

2.3L and 2.4L Engines
(see Figure 7)

When adding coolant, it is important that you use GM Goodwrench DEX-COOL® (orange colored, silicate free) coolant meeting GM specifications. On these vehicles, if silicated coolant is added to the system, premature engine, heater core or radiator corrosion may result. In addition, the engine coolant will require change sooner; at 30,000 milee or 24 months.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Properly drain and recover the coolant to a level below the thermostat.
  3. Unfasten the cover-to-outlet pipe bolt, which is accessible through the exhaust manifold runners.
  4. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  5. Disconnect the radiator and heater hoses from the outlet pipe.
  6. Unfasten the outlet pipe-to-oil pan bolt and the cover-to-outlet pipe bolts.
  7. Remove the thermostat, then clean the old gasket material from the mating surfaces.

To install:
  1. Position the thermostat in ite correct location, then install the cover-to-outlet pipe bolt. Tighten the bolt to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm).
  2. Install the outlet pipe-to-oil pan bolt. Tighten the pipe-to-oil pan bolt to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm) and the pipe-to-transaxle bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  3. Connect the radiator and heater hoses to the outlet pipe.
  4. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  5. Install the cover-to-outlet pipe bolt through the exhaust manifold runner.
  6. Properly fill the cooling system, then connect the negative battery cable.

Transmission oil in the radiator


If the radiator has tranny fluid mixed in with the coolant, then you have an internal tranny cooler leak. At the one side of the tranny, in the saddle tank, there is a tube. This tube allows hot tranny fluid to enter the rad and be cooled before returning to the transmission. It should be totally isolated and submerged in the coolant tank. Occasionally they can leak, and the two fluids will mix. You will need a new rad to repair the problem. It would also be recommended to have the tranny fluid and the coolant flushed after wards. Oil of any kind does not mix well with coolant, and could cause future damage to the tranny more so than the engine.

Bmw 745i 2003 water leaks out from front of motor and it's not the water pump or any hoses , I changed water pump and gaskets. the water flows out as soon as I fill tank,it's behind the crank pully


I had this same problem in my 02 745i... It's leaking from the internal coolant pipe... a $.05 rubber ring is going to cost you 3-5k easily.

2003 4.4 x5 engine coolant light


@01fordeb: You have to assume the system is dyed before a black light is useful.
Black light dyes are available [cheap] at any parts store.

asker: You may find that the coolant level sensor is defective, covered with gunk or that there is some static electricity built up in the coolant. A mechanic should know how to check for stray current. Also, it may be that a little fluid is going out the overflow because the wrong strength of radiator cap is on there, or the spring is worn out. Replacements are available at any parts store.

Pipe that comes out of thermostat and goes into firewall is leaking coolent in '02 Impala, 3.4 liter? Whats this pipe? and can i use pipe dope or something?


This sounds like it goes to your heater core. It is like a small radiator inside your car that circulates hot engine coolant to give you heat when you turn on your heater. You should have rubber hoses that connect the heater core to the thermostat housing. Look closely as to what is leaking, the rubber hose, or the thermostat housing, and try to "snug" up the hose clamp if you can. Some time the thermostat housings corrode and leak. You will need to replace it if that's the case.(Keep in mide that some vehicles use clamps that are spring type, and you can't snug them up)

Leaking oil put of tail pipe, is the cooling sensor important, head gasket blown how do you know


Never seen oil come from tail pipe (unless a piston has a broken ring or a hole burned in it.) Cooling sensor tells the computer the engine temp and the computer turns the fan on through the fan relay. Very important for it to work. A blown head gasket will make the engine overheat, can cause white smoke from tailpipe, coolant loss and extremely rough running. Also can cause coolant in engine oil or oil in radiator. What you may be seeing may be water mixed with carbon from the inside of the pipe. Excessive water coming form pipe is also a head gasket symptom. A compression test or cylinder leakdown test or a radiator hydrocarbon test will tell you if gasket has failed.

Coolant leak


Hello **** B. First double check the hose connection for the leak, it can drain to another connection & appear to leak there. Second, yes there is a gasket on the pipe connection to the block. To replace the gasket, park the car in a location for least 5 to 6 hours to cool down mabe longer. Have the gasket replacement, a tube of gasket sealant, 2 gallons of antifreeze, a drain bucket, and a very large rag or rags. Remove the hose, catch the fluid in bucket, remove the pipe, clean the old gasket area, apply gasket sealent, attache gasket, mount the pipe, tighten all mounting bolts a 1/2 to 3/4 turn each until torqued downed evenly, and attache hose. Fill reservoir, with radiator cap off, start engine and add coolant to radiator until full and you see fluid flowing. Apply cap & check for leaks. Easy???????? Good Luck.
