Question about Audi A6

My car 96 audi a6 quatro running cold on a highway. It seems radiator cooling fans are not turning off after the motor cooled off. Do I have a faulty cooling fan switch? What else could cause a car run cold?

Hello! A little clarification please...Do you mean the temperature gauge is not reaching operating temperature?

The cooling fans are not turning off due to a defective Radiator Fan Switch...It is located to the left and slightly behind the radiator...It is threaded into the cooling system,,,Has a 3 wire connector...Wire colors are...Brown...Brown/White...And Brown/Blue...Cost is around $25...

the temperature gauge is reaching operating temperature but when I am on a highway it drops from the middle to the 1/4 point.

The manual says the car has two thermal cooling fan switches one in the radiator as you described and the other one on the engine. It doesn't say where on the engine, do you know?

Hello! There is a coolant fan resistor...But only one radiator fan switch (also known as a coolant fan control thermo-switch...It's screws into the cooling system...on the left side of the engine (facing front) to the left of the radiator and slightly behind...That's the culprit...Now that I know the temperature gauge reading I would also suspect the thermostat is stuck open...

However; One item at a time...Change the thermo-switch and lets see what we have...

My 2004 3400 closed system ,runs hot in town unless heater is on. driving up a mountain pass it gets very hot.on a flat highway runs normal. new t state, resivior cap, both fans work no leaks or smell

Radiator fan motor or radiator fan thermostat defective/

Also there is a relay that operates the fan motor

In town not enough air passing through radiator allowing it to over temp.. With heater fan running acts like cooling fan keeping engine cool

Highway driving ample air passing through radiator without fan.

Hill climbing requires cooling fan/

Hope this helps?

Hi, The air con in my 2003 Audi A6 1.9 tdi 130 is blowing warm air the air con rad is fully gassed and all fuses are ok . Thanks in advance for any advice on how to fix

The only other thing then would be if the compressor is turning, engaging, and the cooling fan working properly. You should either be able to see the compressor clutch engage, as the switch is energized, or at least hear it click loudly when the switch is energized. If it is not, then there are sensors for the low pressure/high pressure line to tell the compressor when to function, that also have to be checked.

As the engine runs with the compressor turning, one line should be hot/warm, the othe,r (larger diameter hose) should be cool/cold, if the system is working properly.

If the compressor is turning when you have the A/C turned on, then see if the cooling fan is running as well. It must run to remove the heat and cause the process to function properly.

Good luck!

RADIATOR COOLING FAN NOT RUNNING COULD BE BAD ENGINE.COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR IS FAULTY IF COOLING FAN IS NOT TURNING ON AT SET TEMPERATURE OF 196 TO 203 DEGRESS.CHECK SEE COOLING FAN RUNNING WHEN ENGINE RUNNING HOT.IF YES FLUSH RADIATOR , FLUSH ENGINE BLOCK, HEATER CORE,REPLACE RADIATOR CAP.MAKE SURE YOU HAVE 50/50 ANTIFREEZE AND WATER IN THE COOLANT SYSTEM.CHECK WATER PUMP WEEP HOLE IF LEAKING REPLACE WATER PUMP. IF COOLANT FAN DONT TURN ON 196 TO 203 DEGREES, YOU HAVE FAULTY COOLING FAN,SHORT IN FAN WIRING OR ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR FAULTY.IGNITION TIMING WILL CAUSE ENGINE TO OVER HEAT.

CHECK FOR BLOWN COOLANT FAN FUSE OR FAULTY RELAY.IF THE AUXILIARY ELECTRIC FAN DONT RUN WHEN HOT WIRED THE ELECTRIC FAN FAULTY.

SOUND LIKE FAULTY CLUTCH FAN OR THE AUXILIARY ELECTRIC COOLANT FAN NOT RUNNING. CHECK AUXILIARY FAN FUSE AND RELAY. IF LOOK GOOD HOT WIRE TO SEE IF FAN TURNS ON IF NOT FAN FAULTY. IF FAN RUNS YOU HAVE FAULTY THERMO SWITCH. WHICH LOCATED AT THE BOTTOM OF RADIATOR ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE OR ON THE LOWER RADIATOR HOSE ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT.IF FANS OKAY COOLANT LEVEL CORRECT.REPLACE THERMOSTAT.HAVE RADIATOR AND ENGINE FLUSHED.CHECK IN FRONT OF GRILLE MAKE SURE NO DEBRIS BLOCKING OFF AIR FLOW THROUGH RADIATOR CORES AND AC CONDENSOR CORES.

I have a 96 ford probe and it keeps over heating rad. Is full the over flow is full and just put in a new thermo in it please help

You have an Electric cooling fan. Most cooling fans have 2 speeds and if the high speed is not working, eventually the low speed will not keep up and you will overheat.

The cooling fan depends on Electric relays and a temperature sensor on the motor. This sensor on the motor can be different than the sensor that makes your dash gauge work. Go to Autozone or Orellys for a free scan and view the part you need.

If possible, when the engine is cold take off the Radiator cap and have it tested for the amount of Pressure it will hold before letting the coolant go to the overflow. When the engine is running turn on the heater in case you have an airlock in the water system.

2003 Audi TT Quatro Coupe. The radiator cooling fan does not work. Vehicle over heats because the fan does not work. Replaced the radiator cooling fan motor and the temperature sensor. The problems is...

The main reason for the over heating of the audi tt is to do with the water pump. The propeller within the first type of water pumps is made of plastic. This was to prevent corrosion, however was never designed to last longer than 5 years. What you need to do is purchase the new style water pump. These new style water pumps have been designed with a metallic propellor which should resolve the overheating. Let us know how you get on.
