My wife has also had trouble with this and what we did was pop the small little cover off of the steering column (bottom right side if you are sitting in the car) and there is a small white button inside which is a manual release for the key. There apparently is an issue with a contact not making well in the gearshift which prevents that solenoid from energizing, thus allowing the key to be removed.

Replace the ignition switch. It is either under the key or on the opposite side. In the steering column.

Ignition stuck key won't turn to start car!

Gear shift is not totally in the park position - had the same problem with a 2011 Acura TL - a rubber band kept the gear shift lever from totally seating in the park position.

Can't get the keys out the of the ignition in 2008 Cherokee

To free key fob from the ignition, disconnect the negative cable to the battery for 2 minutes. This will do a hard reset on the electronics. Key fob is free and back to normal.

When i crank the car it starts but when i leave the key the car dies

I read your problem, and this seems to be a short in your ignition. If it cranks fine and if only dies with the key left in ignition, this normally indicates a worn out ignition. In the ignition there are small little tumblers like a lock would have. Over a period of time they can get worn out, where they get ware marks or flat marks. Assuming you take the key out it keeps on running, then what is happening your key in the ignition is shorting it out, and causing engine to turn off, thinking your turning key off. Sometimes if you have a back up key, that is not worn at all, or hardly used, that might work for a while, if it does not, your ignition needs to be replaced. I hope this helps. Mike

2001 chevy 2500 ignition key takes some time getting to turn in the ignition. The key seems to be very warn from years of use how hard is it to replace the ignition and keys.

go to the dealer have them cut new keys to Vin they will work like new, the new lock cylinder comes out fairly easy once the cover is completely removed but that also has to be set by a dealer.

1996 Chevy Cav. When i put key in to ignition,

Hi Jamie,
As you turn the key, **** the steering wheel hard side-to-side. The anti-theft interlock between the ignition switch and the steering is just jammed. Happens to all cars from time-to-time, and that's the fix.

apparently steering colum lock. next time try turning your steering wheel to the left while turning the key in the ignition. don't stress the ignition. though if it isn't your stearing lock the last thing you want to do is bust up the or in come cases break your key off in there. Try turning the stearing wheel though. 99% of the time thats what it is.
