Question about 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee

2 Answers

We just installed a new alternator in a 93 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 6 cylinder and the 60 amp fuses keep blowing once the Jeep is driven. There is no problem when the Jeep is in park andf idleing. Any Ideas?

There are two 60amp fuses in the power distribution center. Atl1 and ATL2. These two fuses will blow once the vehicle is put in drive and you proceed to drive. The alternator gauge shows that there is no charge going to the batery at that point. The altinator was puchased at O'Reily auto parts and it was in spec with the model Jeep in question. Are there any other aplications that could be tied into those two 60 amp fuses that I should look at?

Hello! There are 4 wires in the alternator connector...Red...Dark Green/Black...Black...and Dark Green...It looks like torque plus vibration is causing The Red ( or Red/Black...Colors change from 60A fuse to alternator) wire is to close to Black...Take a close look at the connections on the alternator...And make sure that the hot lead isn't close to ground...It's carrying a lot of current and will find a path to ground if one is available...You can view the area when it's dark and see if you can spot current jumping...You will have to simulate vibration...

Let me know what you find.............Guru..........Saailer

Hi!!

Make sure the replacement generator is rated the same amperage than the old one. There is a significant amperage difference between the two body types for that model/year jeep.

Body type XJ
Motor sizes 2.5L and 4.0L
Uses the generator 56005684 rated 81 Amps.
and the 56005685 rated 117 Amps.

Body type ZJ
Motor size 4.0L
Uses the generator 56005685 rated 117 Amps.
and the 56005686 rated 136 Amps.
Motor size 5.2L
Use generator 56027912 rated 117 Amps.
and the 56027913 rated 136 Amps.

The part number is located on the back of the generator. Make sure you have the right replacement.

Good Luck!!

Everything matched upon the puchase at Oreily's auto. There has to be something else going on here.

Check this diagram and the troubleshooting guide on the right. Also make sure all the connections to the generator are correctly made. Blowing the main fuses means that the problem is among the battery, alternator and power distribution box. A grounded wire can do this.

Let me know how it goes.

Under the hood near the battery in the power distribution center there are 2 big fuses listed in the manual for Generator output #1 blue 60Amp and #9 blue 60 amp. I hope this helps. ATR

We just put new gaskets on our 94 jeep grand cherokee laredo was runing great now something keeps blowing the eng control fuse help!!!

first place I'd look is around the perimeter of the heads (I assume you mean head gaskets?) Make sure you haven't inadvertently gotten a wire pinched in between the head & block somewhere.

Instalation of alternator.

There should be a diagram of the belt routing under the hood somewhere. If you can't find it , it should be in the owners manual. If you don't have the manual, get a repair manual at the local bookstore, auto parts store, or online. Should find one for $20. countrycurt0
