My 1997 RAV4 automatic is idoling high and is running rich causing huge amounts of petrol to be eaten up!!! help!!!

The idle air control (IAC) valve can cause this. Before anything Rav4 has tendencies to have vacuum leak causing unnecessary high RPM look and feel along the airfilter duct for anything broken or torn

Water pump barring went out on my 1997 rav4. I heard it knocked the pistons into the values? Is that possible?

The water pump is driven by the cam belt and on some vehicles with an interference engine if the water pump failed and cause the cam belt to break then it could cause internal engine damage. Your 1997 Rav4 water pump is driven by the cam belt but is not an interference engine. So, not to worry as no damage has been done. Just replace the water pump and cam belt and all should be well.

My 97 RAV4 tends to overheat when sitting in traffic. Fine otherwise. Could this be a thermostat problem or a sensor? The check engine light is on also but this may be an unrelated issue.

yes...thermostat usually causes this bc its not you have heat....also radiator may need to be flushed.....coolant may be low..radiator coils may need to be sprayed out with air hose or garden hose...never a pressure washer...have a great day

The air conditioner on my 1998 toyota rav4 is not working, it only works for 5 min. and then it gives only hot air.

It may be one of the pressure cutout switches kicking in to protect the compressor that may be why you get AC for a short period.

You may have low refrigerant, which can be as simple as adding proper amount of refrigerant to the system.

Also check the when you turn the A/C on or off initally that you hear the A/C magnetic clutch engaging on the compressor...otherwise it could be slipping and failing after being used for just a short while (heating up & slipping).

Also do all the controls and A/C buttons seem to be in order and working?

Cuts out

it could be that or a clogged catalytic converter the converter controls air flow from your engine, if its clogged the car cant run right
