Question about 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser

1 Answer

I have a 2004 PT Cruiser and when I have the air conditioning on and come to a stop and the car is idling the RPM'S dip and the car seems to be conking out but it doesn't. Is this a drive belt problem? I had the plugs and wires replaced in November of 2009 at a Chrysler Dealership and have had no problems since then until now. Car has 90K on odometer.

I am will to try this. Where is the TPS on the PT Cruiser? I will have PEP Boys do the RPM adjusting to 1000 RPMs. Many thanks for your help.

Many thanks for your help and expert assistance. Will give this a try and hope that this will be the
solution to my engine idle problems. When Chrysler replaced the plugs and wires last November kinda felt that the RPMs needed to be raised a little.

This is an idle problem - it can be fixed by getting a can of TPS cleaner. Please go to your local parts store like Auto Zone or Advance and get this - it is about 4.00 total. This cleans the TPS or throttle position sensor. Also be sure the air cleaner is good. Last but by far the most effective - like a pc - a little adjusting helps - so adjust the idle up to 1000 RPM'S

Thanks

The TPS is on the intake body of your engine. It will get the spray by you spraying into the intake manifold.

2008 pt cruiser problems. At idle with Air Cond on get frequent RPM drop. 50-100 RPMs. Withour Air Condition on car idles fine (no drop) Also can hear a single click sound when drop occures.

The click sound would be the air conditioner compressor engaging, the engine will slow down do to the additional load. If it idles rough you probably need to think about cleaning the throttle body.

My 2004 PT Cruiser overheats whenever I idle for too long and when my air conditioning is running and the car isn't above 2000 rpms I don't know what the problem is?

Hi Laura. It would seem that the electric cooling fan is not cutting in when it is meant to. Check the cooling fan fuses first, (there should be two, one for the engine and another for the AC) Take the vehicle for an inspection and a scan, asking the mechanic to take special note of the fans and sender units which control the operation. While idling, my pt cruiser rpm goes down with air conditioning on. The car sputters like its about to stall.

its not being told to speed the idle up under load ,now on the back of the steering rack just behind where the steering goes into it is a sensor that increases the RPM on idle when steering is turned but i have found that if this sensor isnt working not only does steering slow engine down but also AC ?? why when they are not related i dont know i just know it does ??

You said you just had the spark plugs replaced, could be that a spark plug wire was connected in the wrong spot, I would check that first, also does the car run smoothly going down the road? clogged fuel filter perhaps. Check engine light on? could alse be a sensor. This newer vehicles basically use a computer to control every aspect of the engine as far as keeping it running at top performance and the least amount of emmissions as possible.

in a word, bollox, the battery has nothing to do with any a/c unit,
because the car is a small engine(relatively)the a/c power drain is about 25%so, when turned on, the cars computer will try to adjust the tickover to compensate for the drop in revs due to the power requirements of the a/c unit(try turning it off, then back on,you will see a drop in revs, then raise up).
the a/c unit is driven by a belt off the engine.

My car idle dips to low RPM at a stop i give it gas it dies

Is the engine light on? Check the air inlet hose between the throttle body & MAF sensor for cracks or leaks. Try unplugging the MAF & see if there is any difference
