The car shiuts off during mid drive completly then starts back up after a few minutes. Beore it shuts off you can not accelerate then it shuts off and lose power steering

In this situation, we start with the easy solutions which is to check each fuse in the fuse box is installed tight. Also with the engine on, wiggle each fuse and see if it affects engine in any way. If it does the fuse may not be tight in its socket. Do the same with the relays located in underer the hood in a platic box at the driver's side. Make sure they are tight in their socket and wiggle them with the engine running. Do the same for any wiriing harness connections you see. Wear gloves, no jewelry, or loose clothing when you do this. If everything is okay, then it is most likely your fuel filter. You can do fuel pressure test to verify you are getting enough pressure.

To change the fuel filter, you will either have to disconnect the fuel pump relay or the fuel pump harness to depressurize the fuel system. Under the driver side door underneath the car, you will find the fuel pump clamped to the body. Remove the mouning blots and unscrew the clips from the fuel line. Keep note of the arrow direction and replace with a new fuel pump. Thanks for using Fixya.

The idle has an intermittant stumble

Your Idle Air Control (IAC) valve may be dirty with carbon, simple fix with throttle body cleaner through the IAC passageway through the throttle body. Make sure it's throttle body cleaner and not carburetor cleaner, the carb cleaner is to corrosive to the gaskets used on the throttle body.
If cleaning the IAC does not help, then it's a good chance that the IAC is to far gone and will need to be replaced.
Good luck and thank you for using fixya

My 1998 vw is getting less mileage per gallon, and my check engine light is on. I scanned it and the code came up that the throttle body control module needs fixed or replaced. Oh yes and the oil light...

yes it will!! you have issues with the tps and air flow valve on the throttle body also you may have to use a code tool to reset all that once the unit is replaced to insure proper throttle response and speed controll through the ECM to the new unit
